- PO - Leonardo da Vinci is know for saying:“Tears come from the heart and not from the brain.”TRANS - Series: Haggai for Hands, Hearts, and Heads(tieback) Previous Messages:1) Hands on August: The Exhortation2) Hands on August: The Exhorters(billboard) Next section:“Hearts in October”First section noted God’s call to get to work. The message was temporal; fix the Temple.Today the message correlates to the Spiritual; be the church and God takes care of us.TIE - We noted the people experienced difficulties when following their leaders; opposition from Samaria and other Jews, and God was not blessing them with great crops and abundance. The people chose to respond, to hear from God, to follow those He placed in charge.TRANS (TIE) - The fist wave of returning Jews arrived in 538 B.C.(BILLBOARD) We will see that as they begin rebuilding the temple, they toss in the towel; they want to give up.Their prophets, both Haggai and Zechariah, stepped in at that time and ministered to the people who returned and they completed the task in 516.Recall that Haggai warned the people that God was not pleased with their neglect. The prophet calls on the people to repent and renew their covenant with God.He tells the people how God will accomplish His purposes for His people and ultimately for the nations of the world.Rebuilding the temple symbolically shows that God returned to be in fellowship with His people.(BILLBOARD) As we step inside this story we will see:Haggai encouraging “patience” and ministering to the hearts of the people.Temple rebuilding brings weeping and rejoicing.Seasoned Jews recall the grander Temple of Solomon when comparing to the modest one being rebuilt.Haggai encouraging the people to focus on the future magnificence of the millennial Temple.TRANS - First we will look at the text.Thereafter we will dig in deeper to determine the meaning and how the principles of this text apply today. What does it say?On the twenty-first of the seventh month, the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet saying, “Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people saying, ‘Who is left among you who saw this temple in its former glory? And how do you see it now? Does it not seem to you like nothing in comparison? ‘But now take courage, Zerubbabel,’ declares the Lord, ‘take courage also, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all you people of the land take courage,’ declares the Lord, ‘and work; for I am with you,’ declares the Lord of hosts. ‘As for the promise which I made you when you came out of Egypt, My Spirit is abiding in your midst; do not fear!’And‘The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘and in this place I will give peace,’ declares the Lord of hosts.”What does it mean?TIE - We read the text.BILL - Next we consider 2 Temple types:1) temporal or earthly2) timeless or heavenlyThe Temporal First and Second Temples (vv.1-5)The prophet speaks the “word of the Lord” v.1Last week we noted the characters in our story: the prince, the priest, the prophet, and the people. In this fresh word, the prophet again addresses these characters.Note that the people are the “remnant” v.2.God is speaking to a particular group; not to everyone in Palestine, nor even all the Jews.Speaking for the Lord, Haggai asks:‘Who is left among you who saw this temple in its former glory? And how do you see it now? Does it not seem to you like nothing in comparison?(dialogical transition) Why is the prophet asking something that brings the already discouraged people down more?God want the people to get honest, get humble, get Him.ILL - The queen of Sheba came to visit Solomon, and one day she put him to the test. She brought artificial flowers so perfectly formed that no human eye could detect them from real flowers. She put them in a vase on Solomon’s table, in his throne room next to his flowers. As he came in, the queen of Sheba is reported to have said, “Solomon, you are the wisest man in the world. Tell me without touching these flowers, which are real and which are artificial.”It is said that Solomon studied the flowers for a long time and spoke nothing, until finally he said, “Open the windows and let the bees come in.”There are ways to tell the artificial from the real—let the bees come in; they will know where the real is. If we live with the authentic Jesus long enough, we will recognize the artificial when we see it.Jesus is real!He is here today! You say, “We get that pastor, but what about the psychical temple?”Glad you ask.We can count on God to do everything He desires for FBC Minneola. What God desires for His church, the people, and what God wants for His property, that tangible—as this building is His—God makes all things available. Now you ask, “Why all the difficulty?Good question. What is our part?2 Things1) Get Genuine about the condition and nature of what belongs to God.2) Get Going about the plans God has for His people.Takes courage, takes faith.Look at v.4‘But now take courage, Zerubbabel,’ declares the Lord, ‘take courage also, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all you people of the land take courage,’ declares the Lord, ‘and work; for I am with you,’ declares the Lord of hosts.God communicates “take courage.”Does that mean the people were scared, weak, not able to do what God asks?No it does not.God is communicating He is present with the people and they can do all He asks.ILL - FBC Minneola has a relationship with God.You ask, “How is that?”I’ll tell you.The Bible tells me we are part of one body:For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.Water baptism illustrates what happens when a person becomes a Christian. There is no other baptism, just baptism into the body of Jesus, the church. If you recall, Corinth was deeply spiritually troubled. They had all kinds of strange beliefs about what was God.They spoke in languages they didn’t understand, they worshiped false Gods, they were a mixture of all sorts of beliefs.Today churches continue to face similar dilemmas.Laughter, falling down even bearing oneself, and speaking in words they don’t even understand.Biblical “tongues” is speaking in a known language; just one you learned to speak supernaturally.Haggai, like Paul in Corinth, is helping people “get real” with themselves and with God.The word to us is the same:“Take Courage”Take courage FBC Minneola, God is present in us.Just as people needed the word from Haggai, today we need to know:“God is present with, provisioning, and protecting FBC Minneola.”Take courage pastor.Take courage people.Look at v.4‘But now take courage, Zerubbabel,’ declares the Lord, ‘take courage also, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all you people of the land take courage,’ declares the Lord, ‘and work; for I am with you,’ declares the Lord of hosts.“Take courage, ‘and work; for I am with you”If God is with people to rebuild a temporal temple, how much more is God with us to build His church?I’ll tell you:“I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.The work of FBC Minneola is done in the power of God who is stronger than the forces of evil.God is building His church everyplace the people put faith first in all matters of church growth.Look at v.5:‘As for the promise which I made you when you came out of Egypt, My Spirit is abiding in your midst; do not fear!’God does not forget!God’s promises to His people are sure, are certain.God’s Spirit abides with His people. This verse says “do not fear!”Were the people afraid?Yes, recall everyone seemed to want the to disappear:Samaritans didn’t like themOther Jews didn’t want to share land with themPeople didn’t want changeFBC Minneola has God’s HS in us:But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know.We have an anointing. Not only is God with us, but is all over, inside, and fills us.Think of the possibility? Is there anything we can’t do that God asks us to accomplish? But He said, “The things that are impossible with people are possible with God.”God is pouring on, in, and through us His HS to do everything, all the work, accomplish the supernatural.TRANS - We’ve noted Haggai encouraging the people to work courageously. We noted God’s presence with His people makes anything He asks possible.Just like the people of Haggai’s time needed a reminder to be courageous, FBC Minneola needs this message today.God’s kingdom building takes courage.Recall I said 2 things:1) Get Genuine about the condition and nature of what belongs to God.2) Get Going about the plans God has for His people.Takes courage and it takes faith.Faith is not always easy:Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.Let’s be honest. If we are to “Get Going” we need lots of faith. We need faith in order for God build this church. It’s not always so easy.We don’t:see much happeningseem to have the energyseem to have the resources. But faith says “hoped for” and I’m certain we all HOPE to see God add lots of people to this church. It’s the next word, “conviction” that often trips up people. The Greek behind our English “the conviction” (evidence or proof in some translations) means a certain something with ability to refute adversaries; cause unfaithful to reconsider.Zodhiates says it:“Implies not merely the charge on the basis of which one is convicted, but the manifestation of the truth of that charge and the results to be reaped; also the acknowledgement, if not outwardly, yet inwardly, of its truth on the part of the accused.”I personally think that, in part, this is why we see churches on the move pic up pace once they begin to see things only imagined happening in their body.ILL - “String Camp” started with kids barely talking amongst themselves, hardly able to play well with each other, and not likely to draw many applause from any onlookers. The kids kept coming, day after day, and working together. They shared a common interest; to make music together.By Wednesday, I noted the were talking with one another and playing (not just instruments) with each other.I noted they even sounded pretty good from time to time.Wednesday morning they had “performance reviews.”One child was too scared; it had been some time sense he’d picked up his cello. But, he pressed on and drew many applause from other kids.See, it’s been sometime for FBC Minneola, but just as this boy had the music in him, we have God in us.We have a great power to do what we don’t see happening. That friends, is faith.Faith is the ability to do what we can’t do without the power of the HS in us.(Haggai tells them to take courage, for God’s presence among them is far more important than the size of any earthly Temple).TRANS (tieback) - We noted Haggai addressed people in regard to the earthly temple. We noted that today God loves in His church, not some building. We noted how the people overcame fear and God blessed them.We identified how fear, when replaced with faith, makes the impossible possible.(billboard) now that we discussed the relationship of the temporal Temple to the church, lets move on to consider the best Temple, the one to come. The Timeless Future and Sure Temple (v.9)Some of the people recalled the great Temple of Solomon.
The temple to Yahweh constructed in Jerusalem during Solomon’s reign. Represented the Lord’s heavenly residence, His presence among the people of Israel, His holiness, and His creation. Played a central role in the ancient Israelite religious experience and identity. The once great temple “represented” God’s house. Our text speaks to those who looked back:‘The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘and in this place I will give peace,’ declares the Lord of hosts.”Haggai is not talking about the current temple project here. The prophet tells those who see the current rebuilding as something “less-than-expected” to consider that no Temple compares to the real one, the Timeless and future House of God.The prophet assures the people that the millennial Temple will be the grandest and best and is yet to come.ILL - Bill Moore and I often spoke about heaven. We did our best to imagine what it might be like in heaven. We’d talk about seeing Jesus, loved ones, and great people of faith.Bill told me about his momma’s peach pie and I hope heaven allows for a bakery :-)As much as we might, we’d end up back to saying something like, “It’s gonna be better.”Regardless of how we imaging heaven, its gonna be better and that is something for which we all can look to; that is our future hope.TRANS - We noted the temporal and the timeless temples. We noted the weakness of humanity and the wonderful greatness of God.Where might we go from here? What is God’s message to us?Temporal, don’t get all caught up in what will pass away.Timeless, the coming Temple will usher in the time when God wipes away every tear, when sin get that last blow, when we assume our time in eternity with God.ILL - Time now is temporal, “this too shall pass” is often quoted by people recovering from drugs and alcohol. Often people in recovery get so caught up in something, overly anxious, they don’t cope and turn toward quick cures. Knowing that circumstances are temporary helps people continue trough difficult times.Let’s remember that church work is not easy. The forces of evil are working against the church.A sleeping giant is no treat.Napoleon is known for stating “China is a sleeping giant. Let her sleep, for when she wakes she will move the world.”The devil may say the same thing about a church that does not work, but he will not say the same thing about FBC Minneola as we begin our time of working to reach this city.(end)
