- People don’t reject Jesus as often as they reject the Jesus Christians represent.INTRO - Last week we discussed the answer Jesus gave Pilate regarding who He was, what He was doing, and how to identify His true followers. This morning we will return the time when Jesus Christ is on trial before Pilate.Pilate does not think that Jesus is guilty as charged and definitely does not think that Jesus should die because of the charge.Jesus is not the only one on trial here; Pilate’s character to speak the truth is, also, a consideration in this text.Pilate, the politician, had a position that he didn’t want challenged.Pilate the politician had trick up his sleeve. The Romans permitted the people the opportunity to request the release of a prisoner each year at Passover.Pilate knew that the Jews requested the release of well-known prisoners.Pilate knew that Jesus was much better known than Barabbas, so he asked the Jews to choose between Jesus and Barabbas thinking they would choose Jesus and he’d be off the hook and not have to send Jesus to death. However, the people chose Barabbas.Even today, people still make the wrong choice not to choose Christ Jesus.EST - In this morning’s Scripture we will hear the people choose Barabbas over Jesus.ESS - Our message will draw on to very important lessons this verse teaches.OSS - We will conclude our time by asking how do these lessons apply to our lives.TRANS - Let’s pray and then turn to our passage in the book of John.PRAYWhat does it say? They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber. What does it mean?Abhorred Adoration of ChristPilate thought the people would choose Christ.Instead they choose Barabbas.People rarely adore what is good in others; most often people look for the worst in others.Just calling out to have Jesus killed proves the people are not interested in adoring Jesus. The people seem to hate Jesus. They people lack judgement.People’s lack of knowledge is to their own destruction:My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.Consider who they choose instead of Jesus:Barabbas the RevolutionistBarabbas is guilty of insurrection:And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. He rebelled against the law of the land.He worked out of the sense of his own depraved character. In the same way, the people call out to have Jesus killed out of a sense of their own flawed character.Barabbas the RobberHe was a thief, a crook, a robber. He would steal all you had.He was the sort of political person that:rebelled against decency such assame sex marriageabortionpublic nuditywas all for laws that robbed people such astaxes that pad political pocketstaxes that support others agendas and causestaxes that keep people from having moreAberrant Advantages of ChoiceChoosing Barabbas puts the hearts of the people on full display. The choice of the people deprives them of comfort.RejectionThe people rejected Jesus by choosing Barabbas.People reject Jesus by making bad choices.marrying a non-believerprioritizing other things ahead of churchnot working with church members to reach new peoplePeople often reject Christ for someone or something else.ResultsChoice is directly correlats to the results that choice dictates. The people choose Barabbas.Rejecting Jesus results in people turning from God.Barabbas was not a Savior of humankind, but one who stole from others. The people got results; they were robbed of being in the presence of God.They gave up their peace, lost their joy, and hurt their souls.God gave, Barabbas took. What does God expect from us?Barabbas was a revolutionist and robber. How to others describe you?Do others say you take a stand against major issues of our day such as abortion, living together, and same-sex marriages? The people rejected Jesus and reaped the results.Do people reject the Jesus you present to them?Do we preach Jesus and:hate others?mix law with grace?and support violence as a means to an end?choose pride over humility?value rules over relationship?care more for ourselves than the poor?As you choose, make sure to choose Jesus and not Barabbas.Live life in such a way people say, “That one is a true Christian!”(end)
