  • Ch. 7 Introduces a new section containing Daniel’s apocalyptic visions, it also takes us back to the reign of Belshazzar (cf. ch. 5) and concludes the Aramaic section of the book.
God wants us to see important connections between history and apocalypse.
Careful study of the Bible, along with the HS, is key to understanding the end times.
Jesus will rapture the church after the Tribulation
Today I’ll explain why I believe Jesus will rapture the church after the Tribulation and then reign with us for 1000 years.
    Historic or Reformed Premillennialism
The position I hold is called Historic or Reformed Premillennialism.
Historic because its the oldest view held by God’s people.
The historic view includes a list of second-century church fathers such as Papias.
Papias lived in the time of Polycarp who was discipled by John the writer of Revelation.
My view is not Dispensationalism that claims the church will be raptured prior to the Tribulation so God can go back to work with Isreal.
That view says the Antichrist will treat the Jews kindly and then turn on them.
Dispensationalist distinguish between the Church and Isreal.
    Postmillennialism and Amillennialism
Two other view include Postmillennialism and Amillennialism.
The post view says Jesus will come after the 1000 years when the HS “Christianizes” the world.
The Amillennial view says Christ reigns now and when Christians die we go to Heaven and reign with him. In this view there is no 1000 year reign of Jesus.
This chapter needs to be understood prior to aligning with any one of these positions regarding the 1000 year reign of Jesus.
    Today I we will see:
God’s kingdom ushered in during the reign of the Antichrist.
God’s kingdom will come when Jesus opens the clouds of Heaven.
When the Kingdom comes, Jesus will reign on earth for 1000 years.

    Kingdom Come: Antichrist on Earth

    READ 7:7
Foolish to speculate the 10 and 3 kings.
If we attempt to picture this and it happens differently, we chance missing it when it does happen because we are looking for the wrong thing.
On the 2nd coming, right now we have no idea what the prophecies mean, but hidden in our mind, as the happen, we will know.
The persecution of Christians will last 3.5 years.
Both Daniel and Revelation help us understand the persecution of Christians will last 3.5 years.
When the Antichrist appears to get a fatal wound, and come back to life, the 3.5 years will begin:
    Revelation 13:3 CSB
One of its heads appeared to be fatally wounded, but its fatal wound was healed. The whole earth was amazed and followed the beast.
Christians living then will know Christ’s return is near.
They can count down the 3.5 years which is why Paul said:
    1 Thessalonians 5:1–4 CSB
About the times and the seasons: Brothers and sisters, you do not need anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. When they say, “Peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you, brothers and sisters, are not in the dark, for this day to surprise you like a thief.
We don’t know the day or hour, but we can know when his return is within 3.5 years.
ILL - Paul and Jesus compared Christ’s return as being like a pregnant woman. In month 9, she knows its any day now, but she does not know exactly when, the day or hour.
The kingdom will come during the reign of the Antichrist:
    Daniel 7:21–22 CSB
As I was watching, this horn waged war against the holy ones and was prevailing over them until the Ancient of Days arrived and a judgment was given in favor of the holy ones of the Most High, for the time had come, and the holy ones took possession of the kingdom.
TRANS - God comes and destroys the Antichrist.
    The saints possess the kingdom.
    How will this happen?

Kingdom Come: Christ Returns on Heavenly Clouds

    READ 7:13-14
Jesus referred to Himself as the Son of Man more than any other self designation.
The language “Ancient of Days” reminds us of His time with God in the beginning:
    John 1:1 CSB
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Jesus quotes from these verses helping us understand what Daniels is seeing:
    Matthew 24:29–31 CSB
“Immediately after the distress of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not shed its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the peoples of the earth will mourn; and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. He will send out his angels with a loud trumpet, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.
This is the rapture of all believers, dead and alive.
The word rapture is not found in our Bibles. However:
The word “gather” (episunago) in the Greek is used to describe the rapture of the elect that, according to Jesus, occurs after the Great Tribulation.
Saying pretty much the same thing Paul writes:
    1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 CSB
For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the archangel’s voice, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are still alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
Jesus Christ comes with the heavenly clouds and the Ancient of Days gives Him the kingdom.
    John writes:
    Revelation 11:15 CSB
The seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven saying, The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign forever and ever.
Trumpet 7 is the final one and Paul tells us what then will happen:
    1 Corinthians 15:50–52 CSB
What I am saying, brothers and sisters, is this: Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor can corruption inherit incorruption. Listen, I am telling you a mystery: We will not all fall asleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed.
Also, when Christ comes He cast the Beast into the lake of fire:
    Daniel 7:11 CSB
“I watched, then, because of the sound of the arrogant words the horn was speaking. As I continued watching, the beast was killed and its body destroyed and given over to the burning fire.
    This is correlated by John:
    Revelation 19:19–20 CSB
Then I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse and against his army. But the beast was taken prisoner, and along with it the false prophet, who had performed the signs in its presence. He deceived those who accepted the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image with these signs. Both of them were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur.
TRANS - The wicked removed, the elect elevated, then comes the Millennium reign.

Kingdom Come: Reign with Jesus for 1000 Years

    READ v.12
Immediately the other beasts, the other kingdoms of humankind, are no longer in control.
    How long do they live?
    Look here:
    Revelation 20:1 CSB
Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven holding the key to the abyss and a great chain in his hand.
“And I say” is repeated 8 times 19:11-21:1.
That tells us that passage is an unfolding sequence of events.
During this time we know about 3 things:
    Satan bound for 1000 years
Nations allowed to live 1000 years
Saints possess the Kingdom for 1000 years
    Let’s answer a few things.
How will be be “brought to the earth” if Paul says we meet in the Lord in the air?
BAK - Using our “super power” of context we learned about last week, we need to know how the culture of the time understood this to mean.
“to meet” is a military term that described what happened when the emperor returned victoriously.
The people “went to meet” him and escort him back.
Another historical implication is in Mt 25 that tells of the bridesmaids “going out to meet” the groom when he returns at the trumpets sound.
Again, the culture understood this a going out to meet and escort back, this time to the banquet hall.
    go, meet, and return
All audiences of the day understood this implication was go, meet, and return with.
Believers will be caught up with Jesus and escort Him back to the earth.
We will be gone briefly so the bowls of wrath will be poured out on all who remain.
The Bible does not tell us how long that will last.
Perhaps the 1000 years is a way for God to teach us what righteous rule is about.
Every election year, every dictator in power, every hope for justice or equality, and every other promise from humankind about being righteous fails to prove true.
No human government has ushered in a righteous rule.
However, God’s kingdom on earth with Jesus as king will be perfect righteously ruled.
    Zechariah says:
    Zechariah 14:6–9 CSB
On that day there will be no light; the sunlight and moonlight will diminish. It will be a unique day known only to the Lord, without day or night, but there will be light at evening. On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half of it toward the eastern sea and the other half toward the western sea, in summer and winter alike. On that day the Lord will become King over the whole earth—the Lord alone, and his name alone.
Wicked dealt their hand and Jesus is king.
    What about the Saint’s possession?
When Jesus comes back, the world destroyed by God’s wrath & will be recreated.
    It will be like Eden.
We will spend eternity on this new earth.
The 1000 years will be different in that it includes unbelieving survivors of the nations who to to Jerusalem to worship.
    John describes it like this:
    Revelation 20:7–15 CSB
When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle. Their number is like the sand of the sea. They came up across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the encampment of the saints, the beloved city. Then fire came down from heaven and consumed them. The devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet are, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Then I saw a great white throne and one seated on it. Earth and heaven fled from his presence, and no place was found for them. I also saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life, and the dead were judged according to their works by what was written in the books. Then the sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them; each one was judged according to their works. Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.
At the end of the 1000 years, the devil and his crew are thrown into the lake of fire.
The destiny of everyone is sealed when Jesus returns.
    After that comes judgement.

    Acknowledge you are a sinner.
Believe in Jesus, as God who died on the cross taking God’s wrath in your place.
    Trust Jesus for your salvation.
