In the Midst of Suffering (John 11)
- “We were promised sufferings. They were part of the program. We were even told, 'Blessed are they that mourn,' and I accept it. I've got nothing that I hadn't bargained for. Of course it is different when the thing happens to oneself, not to others, and in reality, not imagination.”― C.S. LewisChanging water into wine2:1–11Healing the official’s son4:46–54Healing the invalid5:1–15Feeding the multitude6:5–13Walking on the water*6:16–21Healing the man born blind9:1–7Raising Lazarus11:1–441- Jesus is delayed.
John 11:4 ESV But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”John 1:14 ESV And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.John 11:7 ESV Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.”John 11:8–10 ESV The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”Jeremiah 13:16 ESV Give glory to the Lord your God before he brings darkness, before your feet stumble on the twilight mountains, and while you look for light he turns it into gloom and makes it deep darkness.John 8:12 ESV Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”― C.S. LewisJohn 11:14–15 ESV Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”Ephesians 2:1 ESV And you were dead in the trespasses and sins2- Jesus is the promise.John 11:17 ESV Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.John 11:21–22 ESV Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.”John 11:23–24 ESV Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”John 11:25–27 ESV Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”1 Corinthians 15:21 ESV For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead.Colossians 3:4 ESV When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.John 11:32 ESV Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”John 11:33–34 ESV When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.”Only the suffering God can help! -BonhoefferJohn 11:35–37 ESV Jesus wept. So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?”Joni- Jesus was paralyzed to on the Cross. Our trials show His glory as we trust Him!John 3:16 ESV “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.Death is not the way it ought to be. Death is abnormal, it is not a friend. It isn’t right. This isn’t truly part of the circle of life. Death is the end of it. So grieve. Cry. The Bible tells us not only to weep, but to weep with those who are weeping (Rom. 12:15, NASB). We have a lot of crying to do. -Tim Keller3. Jesus is the life.John 11:38–39 ESV Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.”1 Corinthians 15:26 ESV The last enemy to be destroyed is death.Revelation 21:4 ESV He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”Jesus knew that to raise Lazarus from the dead would push his enemies toward extreme measures. So he knew that the only way he could get Lazarus out of the tomb was if he put himself into it. Indeed, if he is to guarantee resurrection for all who believe in him, he must put himself into the grave. On the cross that’s what he did. -Tim KellerJohn 11:40–42 ESV Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.”John 17:1 ESV When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you,John 11:43–44 ESV When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”John 1:3 ESV All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.John 1:10 ESV He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.John 11:45–46 ESV Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him, but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. The Cross has radically altered all our relationships and reshapes our thinking, affections, & fruit of our actions!Humiliation-ExaltationIf Jesus died to forgive your debts(paid in full) and has risen to be your living Savior, then what can death do to you?1 Corinthians 15:3–4 ESV For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,Communion1 Corinthians 11:24 ESV and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”1 Corinthians 11:25 ESV In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”Then Jesus said, “I am your resurrection and your life. So believe completely in me, though you die, yet you will live, live and believe in me then you shall never die. Do you believe this?” Isaiah 41:10ESV
