    Won’t make that mistake again
    An opportunity for growth
    Faithfulness of God
What God brought into our lives to teach us
What God spared us from though we deserve it
As we begin our study of the book of Deuteronomy we enter into it with a desire to learn from those who have gone before us so we can apply the wisdom they gained and avoid the mistakes that taught them. We also begin with the joy of knowing that God is faithful to keep his promises in spite of our failures.
This is why we titled the sermon series: Deuteronomy: Changing Times and an Unchanging God
Our times change and the choices we make shift life around us but the firm foundation of God in our lives never shifts and never fails.

    Deuteronomy 1:1–8 ESV
1 These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab. 2 It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea. 3 In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the people of Israel according to all that the Lord had given him in commandment to them, 4 after he had defeated Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and in Edrei. 5 Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to explain this law, saying, 6 “The Lord our God said to us in Horeb, ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain. 7 Turn and take your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites and to all their neighbors in the Arabah, in the hill country and in the lowland and in the Negeb and by the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates. 8 See, I have set the land before you. Go in and take possession of the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their offspring after them.’

    Genesis 21:20–21 ESV
20 And God was with the boy, and he grew up. He lived in the wilderness and became an expert with the bow. 21 He lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
So Moses had lead the people from Egypt to Sinai, from Sinai to Kadesh-Barnea, through 40 years of desert wandering, and now he had lead them to the doorstep of the promised land.

    Preparing Hearts and Minds

It is here that Moses will remind the people of God’s law and prepare them to enter the land with a renewed commitment to their covenant with God.

    Second Chance

    Deuteronomy 1:3 ESV
3 In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the people of Israel according to all that the Lord had given him in commandment to them,

    First Try

    Numbers 10:11–13 ESV
11 In the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth day of the month, the cloud lifted from over the tabernacle of the testimony, 12 and the people of Israel set out by stages from the wilderness of Sinai. And the cloud settled down in the wilderness of Paran. 13 They set out for the first time at the command of the Lord by Moses.

    Enemies Defeated

    Reminders of the past

    Deuteronomy 1:5–7 ESV
5 Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to explain this law, saying, 6 “The Lord our God said to us in Horeb, ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain. 7 Turn and take your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites and to all their neighbors in the Arabah, in the hill country and in the lowland and in the Negeb and by the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.

What did the Lord our God tell us to do?

    Promises to be fulfilled!

    Deuteronomy 1:8 ESV
8 See, I have set the land before you. Go in and take possession of the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their offspring after them.’

    Covenant with Abraham

    Genesis 15:18–21 ESV
18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, 19 the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, 20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”
    Genesis 17:7–8 ESV
7 And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. 8 And I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God.”

Covenant of Abraham extended to Isaac

    Genesis 26:3–5 ESV
3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you, for to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham your father. 4 I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, 5 because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.”

Covenant of Abraham extended to Jacob

    Genesis 35:12 ESV
12 The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you, and I will give the land to your offspring after you.”

    Conclusion

    God is faithful

    2 Timothy 2:13 ESV
13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.

    God’s faithfulness to us.

    2 Thessalonians 3:3 ESV
3 But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.
    1 John 1:9 ESV
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
    2 Peter 3:13 ESV
13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

    We are Called to Obey

No matter what we do, no matter the obstacles we face, God is faithful. Listen to these words from Jesus:
    Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
