5 Things to Know this Week @ First Church

This is a little longer First Church Alert than usual, so please read to the end!

1 Epiphany Celebration this Sunday

Epiphany is the day when we remember the arrival of the three wise men to worship the baby Jesus. Our Epiphany celebrations begin at 9 a.m. with breakfast.  Kids will have a chance to make their own special crowns to wear in worship at 10 a.m., when we’ll all be together to celebrate communion. We’ve got special music from Veronica and Audrey Leitner, singing, “Light of the World,” along with the praise band and a message from Pastor MJ.  A big thanks to Terry Miller for filling in while Dean Rees is visiting Michael in Chicago.

2 Invite a friend

As 2023 begins, please take an opportunity to invite a friend to worship, small groups, or any of our ministries throughout the week.  MOPS, youth groups, Dude Club, Bible study with Dr. Don, the Revive Women’s Study—any of these are great ways to introduce guests to Jesus Christ.

3 Anyone play bass?

With Brandon Bass’ move to Kansas, we are missing a bass player in the praise band. Do you play?  Know anyone else who does?  Please contact Chris Ludwig at 719-468-0701.

4 Christmas Joy Offering Update, plus Adult Mission Trip

Thank you for your generosity!  To date, we have received just a little over $1600. We are hoping to fund the construction of one cistern at $2400, so we have made the decision to extend the deadline for contributions to this Sunday, January 8. Please give generously as you are able.  Also, is there anyone else interested in the adult mission trip to southern Mexico?  The dates from which to choose are July 24 or August 1.  Please see Pastor MJ ASAP.

5 Congregational Meeting, this Sunday, January 8

Please stay after worship on Sunday, January 8, for a brief congregational meeting for the purpose of amending our bylaws to shorten our elders’ terms on the Session. Here is the specific change being proposed:

Current text:

The session shall consist of five elders.  Ordinarily, elders shall be elected for 3 year terms, or shorter when there is a vacancy.  No elder shall be elected for a term of more than three years, nor shall an elder serve for consecutive terms, either full or partial, aggregating more than six years.  An elder having served a total of six years shall be ineligible for reelection to the session for a period of at least one year.

Proposed text:

The session shall consist of five elders.  Ordinarily, elders shall be elected for 2 year terms, or shorter when there is a vacancy.  No elder shall be elected for a term of more than two years, nor shall an elder serve for consecutive terms, either full or partial, aggregating more than five years.  An elder having served a total of five years shall be ineligible for reelection to the session for a period of at least one year.
