Ephesians 4:1-8ESV

Hymns for October 16, 2022

#128 I Sing the Mighty Power of God

1 I sing the mighty pow'r of God

That made the mountains rise,

That spread the flowing seas abroad,

And built the lofty skies.

I sing the wisdom that ordained

The sun to rule the day;

The moon shines full at His command

And all the stars obey.

2 I sing the goodness of the Lord

That filled the earth with food;

He formed the creatures with His word

And then pronounced them good.

Lord, how Thy wonders are displayed

Where'er I turn my eye:

If I survey the ground I tread

Or gaze upon the sky!

3 There's not a plant or flow'r below

But makes Thy glories known;

And clouds arise and tempests blow

By order from Thy throne;

While all that borrows life from Thee

Is ever in Thy care,

And everywhere that man can be,

Thou, God, art present there.

#1023 Jesus, with Thy Church Abide

1 Jesus, with Thy Church abide;

Be her Savior, Lord, and Guide,

While on earth her faith is tried:

O, we beseech Thee, hear us.

2 May her voice be ever clear,

Warning of a judgment near,

Telling of a Savior dear:

O, we beseech Thee, hear us.

3 Keep her life and doctrine pure,

Help her, patient, to endure,

Trusting in Thy promise sure:

O, we beseech Thee, hear us.

4 May she guide the poor and blind,

Seek the lost until she find,

And the broken hearted bind:

O, we beseech Thee, hear us.

5 May her lamp of truth be bright,

Bid her bear aloft its light

Through the realms of heathen night:

O, we beseech Thee, hear us.

6 Arm her soldiers with the cross,

Brave to suffer toil or loss,

Counting earthly gain but dross:

O, we beseech Thee, hear us.

7 May she holy triumphs win,

Overthrow the hosts of sin,

Gather all the nations in:

O, we beseech Thee, hear us.

#705 It Is Well with My Soul

1 When peace like a river attendeth my way,

When sorrows like sea billows roll;

Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,

"It is well, it is well with my soul."

Refrain:

It is well with my soul,

It is well, it is well with my soul.

2 Tho' Satan should buffet, tho' trials should come,

Let this blest assurance control,

That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate,

And hath shed His own blood for my soul. [Refrain]

3 My sin - O the bliss of this glorious tho't -

My sin - not in part but the whole,

Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! [Refrain]

4 And Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight,

The clouds be rolled back as a scroll,

The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend,

"Even so" - it is well with my soul. [Refrain]

#794 Let All Things Now Living

1 Let all things now living

A song of thanksgiving

To God the Creator triumphantly raise;

Who fashioned and made us,

Protected and stayed us

Who still guides us on to the end of our days.

God’s banners are o’er us;

His light goes before us-

A pillar of fire shining forth in the night;

Till shadows have vanished

And darkness is banished,

As forward we travel from light into light.

2 His law He enforces;

The stars in their courses

And sun in its orbit obediently shine.

The hills and the mountains,

The rivers and fountains,

The deeps of the ocean proclaim Him divine.

We, too, should be voicing

Our love and rejoicing;

With glad adoration a song let us raise

Till all things now living

Unite in thanksgiving:

“To God in the highest, hosanna and praise!”

Almighty and most merciful Father, we are thankful that your mercy is

    higher than the heavens,

    wider than our wanderings,

    deeper than all our sin.

Forgive our careless attitudes toward your purposes,

    our refusal to relieve the suffering of others,

    our envy of those who have more than we have,

    our obsession with creating a life of constant pleasure,

    our indifference to the treasures of heaven,

    our neglect of your wise and gracious law.

Help us to change our way of life

    so that we may desire what is good,

    love what you love,

    and do what you command,

           through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Definition of Calcedon

We, then, following the holy Fathers, all with one consent,

teach men to confess one and the same Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,

the same perfect in Godhead and also perfect in manhood;

truly God and truly man, of a reasonable soul and body;

consubstantial with the Father according to the Godhead,

and consubstantial with us according to the Manhood;

in all things like unto us, without sin;

begotten before all ages of the Father according to the Godhead,

and in these latter days, for us and for our salvation,

born of the Virgin Mary, the God-bearer, according to the Manhood;

one and the same Christ, Son, Lord, Only-begotten,

to be acknowledged in two natures, inconfusedly, unchangeably, indivisibly, inseparably;

the distinction of natures being by no means taken away by the union,

but rather the property of each nature being preserved,

and concurring in one Person and one Subsistence,

not parted or divided into two persons,

but one and the same Son, and only begotten,

God the Word, the Lord Jesus Christ,

as the prophets from the beginning have declared concerning Him,

and the Lord Jesus Christ Himself has taught us,

and the Creed of the holy Fathers has handed down to us.
