Opening Prayer & Gathering #152 What Star Is This, with Beams So Bright, vs. 4

O Jesus, while the star of grace impels us on to seek your face,

let not our slothful hearts refuse the guidance of your light to use.

Call to Worship (Psalm 33)

We are called to follow—

to walk in the way of justice and righteousness,

for we are children of God!

We are called to serve—to be Christ with and for one another,

for we are the salt of the earth!

We are called to shine—

to be beacons of hope and witnesses to truth,

for we are the light of the world!

Come, you who are claimed as children of God,

salt of the earth and light of the world.

Let us worship the Lord!

Opening Hymn #694 Great God of Every Blessing

(Please remain standing through the sung response)

Call to Confession

The more we know God’s holiness, the more we can sense our distance from our Creator. The more we seek God’s justice and faithful living, the more we understand our complicity in systems that oppress. With humble hearts, let us confess our brokenness, our selfishness and our sin.

Prayer of Confession

Gracious God, we confess that it is harder to do than we expected, this life of faith. You call us to be salt of the earth and to live lives of justice and righteousness and love. But our lives become busy. Following what others do is just easier. And sometimes the cost for doing what is right seems too high. One day, perhaps, we will commit more fully, but the status quo works better for us right now. Forgive us, we pray. Startle our senses and disrupt our routines. Renew in us the passion for doing what is right in your eyes, and inspire us to be sources of your light in the world. May we, like the prophets and the saints of old, act by faith no matter how high the cost.

Assurance of Forgiveness and Exchange of Peace

Hear the good news! Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace.

May the peace of Christ be with you; And also with you.

Please exchange the peace of Christ with your neighbors.

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed (Traditional)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
