Opening Prayer & Gathering #152 What Star Is This, with Beams So Bright, vs. 4

Call to Worship

Do you see it? In fire and cloud, our God appears!

His glory envelops us so that we are astonished..

Do you hear it? A voice peals out from heaven:

“This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him.”

Open your eyes; unstop your ears. We are gathered on holy ground.

The Lord is here in our midst! Let us worship him.

Opening Hymn #265 Jesus Shall Reign Where'er the Sun

(Please remain standing through the sung response)

Call to Confession

We don’t have to look very far to see the brokenness of our world: broken relationships, broken systems, broken nations, broken people. We are tired. We are worn. And we know that the world didn’t get this way on its own. So, together, let us confess our part in the brokenness of things, and ask for God’s help to repair and restore.

Prayer of Confession

God of radiant light, we confess that we are sometimes too comfortable dwelling in darkness. We say we want things to change and that we do not accept the way things are. But, in reality, we want others to do the changing so we don’t have to be bothered with it. We resist the work of transformation and sometimes do not even believe it is possible. Forgive our unbelief. Soften our hearts toward one another and ourselves. May your Spirit move in, through, and among us. Make us lightbearers for your sake, and for the sake of your people. Amen.

Assurance of Forgiveness and Exchange of Peace

Hear the good news: while we may not always get it right, God is faithful. God keeps God’s promises. Let this truth seep down, deep into your weary bones: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven and set free for life in God’s Spirit. Thanks be to God.

May the peace of Christ be with you; And also with you.

Please exchange the peace of Christ with your neighbors.

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed (Traditional)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
