Pastor's Pen
Last Sunday, we had a “Deacon Appreciation
Day”. We have 7 active deacons that do a great
job serving our church and their pastors. They
take a great burden from my shoulders by
taking care of many things dealing with the
physical needs of the church. That allows me to
focus more on the spiritual needs of the church.
This was the purpose of ordaining deacons in
the first church at Jerusalem. “Whom we may
appoint over this business. But we (pastors) will
give ourselves continually to prayer and to the
ministry of the Word” (Acts 6:3-4).
Let me once again recognize these faithful
men: Ray Abernathie, Eldon Drake, Gary
Harper, Robert Howard, Rick Radford, Leroy
Richards, & Russell Self. Well done, good and
faithful servants!

We will continue the sermon series on the
Seven Sayings of Christ from the cross. We have
looked at the first two and I have heard several
say that they are getting a lot out of the messages.
This Sunday, we see Him asking John to care
for His mother.
I also want to encourage one and all to join
us in our Adult Bible Class on Wednesday nights
at 7:00PM for a character study of Joseph in the
book of Genesis. He is seen as a type of Christ,
and we will note the similarities in their lives as
we go along.

March is here and once again all
of the meteorologists are talking
about it “coming in like a lion” and
“going out like a lamb”. But what
does that even mean? Who started
this saying anyway?
There are a lot of different origin
stories out there. Iʼm not sure it really
matters where the saying came from,
but what is important are the symbols
in the saying and that people love to
talk about the weather. In Oklahoma
we love to watch the weather even
when it is coming right at us.
The bible is full of lion and lamb
imagery. Both of these monikers are
ascribed to Jesus. John saw Him and
said: “Behold the Lamb of God,
which taketh away the sin of the
world.” (John 1:29) In Revelation 5
Jesus is referred to as “the Lion of the
tribe of Judah” and then a “Lamb
who was slain”. Christ is both the
lion and the lamb.
As the Lion of Judah, Christ fulfills
Genesis 49:9. He is the Messiah that
came from the tribe of Judah. As the
Lamb of God, Jesus is Godʼs one and
only sinless Lamb who was sacrificed
once for all the sin of mankind.
Christ came in like a lamb to save
the world from sin. He will return like
a lion to judge the world for itʼs sin.
March affords us yet another
opportunity to speak to people about
what Christ has done. To let them
know that the storm of Godʼs wrath is
coming right at them. They can
repent, believe the gospel and put
their trust in the Lamb of God, or wait
and face the Lion of Judah.
