Welcome
We welcome you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
We hope you will be encouraged and edified, having heard Biblical
truth in love.
Great Basin RP is a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of
North America, one of the oldest denominations in the United States.
We are committed to the doctrines of Scripture and the formation of
loving community as a necessary fruit of the Gospel.
In light of the above, we believe that the most comprehensive and accurate summary of biblical teaching is found in the Westminster Confession of Faith, together with the Westminster Larger and
Shorter Catechisms. These documents were completed in 1647 as a summary of Christian belief and practice, with the desired intention of helping Christ’s church become unified in doctrine, government, and worship (John 17:11). In addition to the Westminster Standards, we also maintain the Testimony of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of
North America, which is our denomination’s own continuing and contemporary application of the Word of God to our current culture and context.

The Meaning of Baptism (1 Pet. 3:18-22)
Introduction
Theme: Baptism is a sign and seal of being washed in the blood and Spirit of Christ; therefore we are to be assured of our faith in Christ, and thus draw assurance and strength from our Baptisms.
Baptism as a Sacrament
72. Is, then, the outward washing with water itself the washing away of sins? “No,1 for only the blood of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit cleanse us from all sin.”
What is a Sacrament?
Baptism as a visible sign of invisible washing (1 Pet. 3:21)
Application: Baptism is a call to faith and self-examination
Baptism as Salvation
73. Why then does the Holy Spirit call Baptism the washing of regeneration and the washing away of sins?
God speaks thus with great cause, namely, not only to teach us thereby that just as the filthiness of the body is taken away by water, so our sins are taken away by the blood and Spirit of Christ;1 but much more, that by this divine pledge and token He may assure us that we are as really washed from our sins spiritually as our bodies are washed with water.2
The Issue of Sacramental Language (Gen. 17:9-10)
Baptism and Washing in the Blood of Christ (Vs 18)
Baptism and Washing in the Spirit of Christ (Vs 18)
Application: We are to remember our Baptisms and be assured of
our cleansing
Baptism as Spiritual Warfare
74. Are infants also to be baptized?
Yes, for since they, as well as their parents, belong to the covenant and people of God,1 and through the blood of Christ2 both redemption from sin and the Holy Spirit, who works faith, are promised to them no less than to their parents,3 they are also by Baptism, as a sign of the covenant, to be engrafted into the Christian Church, and distinguished from the children of unbelievers,4 as was done in the Old Testament by circumcision,5 in place of which in the New Testament Baptism is appointed.6
Christ’s Authority over the Spirit Realm (Vs 22)
Noah’s Victory over the world through the Ark (Vs 19-20)
Application: We are to remember our Baptisms and be strengthened

This Week’s Confessional Meditation
Baptism is a sacrament ordained by our Lord Jesus Christ. It is a sign and seal of the inclusion of the person who is baptized in the covenant of grace. Baptism with water teaches that we and our children are conceived and born in sin. It signifies our dying to sin and our rising to newness of life by virtue of our union with Christ in His death and resurrection. It also signifies and seals to us cleansing from sin by the blood and Spirit of Christ. Since these gifts of salvation are the gracious provision of the triune God, who is pleased to claim us as His very own, we are baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Baptized persons are called upon to assume the obligations of the covenant; Baptism summons us to renounce sin and the world, and to walk humbly with our God in devotion to His commandments.
Although our young children do not yet understand these things, they are nevertheless to be baptized. For the promise of the covenant is made to believers and to their children, as God declared to Abraham, ‘And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you.’ (Genesis 17:7) Under the New Testament, no less than in the Old, the children of believers, have, by virtue of their birth, an interest in the covenant and a right to the seal of it. The covenant of grace is the same in substance in both the Old and the New Testament, and Baptism has replaced circumcision as the seal of that covenant. (Colossians 2:11,12) Our Savior admitted little children into His presence, embracing them and blessing them, and saying, ‘Of such is the kingdom of God.’ (Mark 10:14) The grace signified in Baptism is not tied to the moment of administration. Scripture teaches that our children are covenantally holy before their baptism (I Corinthians 7:14). Baptism applies the promises and obligations of the covenant to our children, and calls them to personal repentance and faith as they come to years of understanding.
