Associate Professor Of Christian History My general research interests are in the area of church-state relations. More specifically, I am interested in the churches and their responses to various military conflicts. I am also interested in questions surrounding the “post-Christian establishment” (or post-Constantinian) relationship between church and state in Canada and the West. I was recently awarded a SSRHC Standard Research Grant for the purpose of researching Canadian churches and constructions of nation and empire, 1899-1945 (during the South African War, the First World War, and the Second World War). This research project will be a major focus of mine for the next few years. Present Research Projects: * A book on the history of Canadian Protestant churches and warfare, 1899-1945 * A book on the history of McMaster Divinity College * A book on Baptists, war and imperialism (co-edited with Michael Haykin) * A book on the history of Canadian Baptists and public life (co-edited with Paul Wilson) * A book of the history, theology and pastoral practice of baptism (co-edited with Jim Dvorak) * An annotated bibliography of Canadian churches and war * An article on Canadian Protestant missionaries and attitudes to empire, 1887-1914 * An article on imperial attitudes in late 19th century Canadian Protestant children’s literature * An anthology of Canadian English Protestant poetry during the South African War Recent Lectures and Conference Papers: * Perpetua and Felicitas: Ancient-Future Heroes * American Society of Church History: “‘The Empire is Safe for the Future’: Constructing Little Imperialists in the Late-Victorian Canadian Protestant Children’s Press” * Canadian Baptist Historical Society: “Ontario Baptists and the War of 1812” * Canadian Society of Church History: “Canadian Baptists and the War of 1812” * Canadian Society of Church History: “Traitor, Half Breeds, Savages and Heroes: Canadian Baptist Newspapers and Constructions of the Riel Rebellion in 1885” * Bingham Colloquim: “When the Blood of the Martyrs Was Not Enough: A Survey of Places Where the Church Was Wiped Out” * Gospel of Judas and the Formation of the Canon; Gospel of Judas and the “Lucky Winner Thesis” and
