    Text: Genesis 1:2
Intro: When things are out of control. Begin at the beginning.
The ‘chaotic’ disaster of 9/11. Where were you?
20 years of 9/11 and 2 years of GracePointe
    The Spirit is Personal
    The Spirit is Divine/God
Thesis: The Spirit turns the nothingness into beauty.

The Spirit is Present (even in the Nothingness)

    · The earth is uninhabitable at this point.
    · Formless
    · Empty
    · Dark
    · Watery – sometimes represents judgement. Noah. The Red Sea.
    · When everything looked bleak, the hope that was presented was that the Spirit is present.
    · Just as the Spirit was present in ‘voidness’, so is the Spirit is present during the darkness and void of life. You may feel as if your life is formless. Empty. Void. But the Spirit is there.

    The Spirit is Providential

    · It’s one thing to say that the Spirit is present, but if He is incapable of doing anything about it, so what?
    · יְרַחֵ֑
    · Image of a bird or an eagle.
    · He is ‘over.’ The Spirit is providential. He governs. He guides toward God’s desired end.
    · Deut 32:10-14
    · Isaiah 31:5 “Like hovering birds, so the Lord of Armies will protect Jerusalem; by protecting it, he will rescue it; by passing over it, he will deliver it.”
    · Just as the Spirit was turning the Creation into something beautiful, He does the same with lives. Just as the Creation was empty, here, the wilderness is empty. But the Spirit…
    · The Spirit is weaving together the threads of His will to make your life a portrait of God’s grace.
    · You may not see the plan, but the hovering Spirit has one. The unseen Spirit is at work in your seen circumstances.

    The Spirit is Purposeful

    · From Chaos to Creation
    · The act of Creation. The Spirit is reversing the ‘nothingness.’
    · Day 1: Light
    · Day 2: Separation of Waters
    · Day 3: Dry Land; Vegetation
    · Ref: Isaiah 45:18-19
    John 6:63 CSB
The Spirit is the one who gives life. The flesh doesn’t help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.
The Spirit gives life through the Word. Often, churches can be confused about the purpose of Sunday Morning worship. Entertainment? Fellowship? Ministry? All of these are good. But God’s primary work is through the exposition of the Word. The Spirit is at work when the Word is preached and taught to a willing and desirous people.
    · Recreation – Revelation 21:1 The Sea is no longer there. The state of ‘chaos’ and ‘void’ has been erased.
    Revelation 21:1 CSB
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.
    · The Spirit is guiding the Church to participation in the invitation for others to come. “The Spirit and the Bride say ‘Come.’
    · The Spirit began His work in you before He ever called you to faith in Jesus Christ. And now, He is continuing that work in you to make you like Jesus Christ.
What does all of this mean?
    · We can go forth in the middle of the chaos of the world because we can trust that God is doing something beautiful though we may not see it.
    · You can entrust your life to the guiding of the Spirit because He takes the void and dark places of our lives and he fills the void, illuminates the darkness, and organizes the chaos.
    · You can entrust your life to the Spirit of Christ knowing that He will remake you and shape you.
    · We can trust the Spirit to work in the lives of the people of GracePointe Church in order to bring glory and honor to the name of Jesus Christ.
When I lead someone to pray and invite Christ into their hearts, I will ask them, “how do you feel?” They respond “I feel good. That was strange.” That was the Holy Spirit coming to live in your heart. He is bringing the peace of Christ with Him. He is bringing the Love of God with Him. That is what you are experiencing. Just as the Spirit created in Genesis 1, He begins the creation of a new life in you.
Just as the Spirit is seen in Genesis 1 hovering over the unformed creation, so does He hover over the chaos of the life of the sinner. He begins the process of restoration. He chases away the darkness. He separates you from the judgment. He fills the void.
Would you pray this with me? God, take the emptiness and formlessness and the darkness of our world, and by your Spirit turn them into something that is Christ-honoring.
