- Title: The Hope Held Out in the GospelText: Colossians 1:18-23INTRODUCTIONToday we’re gonna continueour series in Colossians.Let’s turn togetherin our Biblesto Colossians 1.Colossians 1:18-23.& when you get therepls stand forthe readingof God’s Word. The title of today’s teaching isThe Hope Held Outin the Gospel. In Colossians 1:19-23the Scriptures say:Colossians 1:18–23 (NIV)And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him,and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation—if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant. You may be seated.Abuse of power.Injustice.Prejudice.Pride.Hatred.Jealousy.Rage.Racism.Riots.Murder.All of those thingshave somethingin common.& I can sum it upw/ one word:Sin.6000 yearsafter the 1sthumans fell into sinthe world is still plaguedby the same problem:Ppl are still fallen.Ppl are still selfish.Ppl are still sinful.& for centurieshumans havetried many methodsto bring ppl together& bring peaceto the world. But those effortscontinue to fall short.& they always will.Because humanityhas a sin problem.Humans cannot conquersin bcs all humansare inherently sinful. So, what hopedoes this world havefor peace? How can pplbe brought togetherinto a right relationshipw/ one another?Paul answersthose questions for usin today’s passage. As we’ll seeThe only hopefor our time. The only hopefor humanity. Is the hopeheld outin the gospel. The hopeof 1st being reconciledto God so thatthru our relationshipw/ Godwe can be reconciledto one another. The hopeof having peacew/ God& w/one anotheris thru the body & bloodof God’s divine-human Son.We’ll talk abt this hope& see how it applies to us.PRAYERLet’s pray.Fatherin this world that seemsso hopelesswe thank You for the hopeyou offer us thru the gospel.Help us to hear& understand the truthabt this gospel.& give us graceto live in this gospel. In Jesus name.Notice firstPaul’s powerful wordsin Colossians 1:19.He says:Colossians 1:19 (NIV)For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in [His Son]...Here Paul’s talking abtthe incarnation.God the Fatherwas pleased to haveall the fulness of deitydwell in a human body.Paul explains this furtherin Colossians 2:9.He says...Colossians 2:9 (NIV)For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form...John saysthe same thing in John 1:14John 1:14 (EHV)The Word became flesh and dwelled among us. We have seen his glory, the glory he has as the only-begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. It’s impossibleto overstatethe immensityof the Incarnation.God’s divine Sonbecame a realhuman being. He did thisin such a waythat in the Son of Godthe fullness of deitytruly livesin truly human form.Jesus is fully God& fully Manall wrapped upin one physicalHuman Body.God’s Son isthe fulness of Godin human bodily form. Why does Paul stress this?Wellfalse teachers—who wld laterbe knownas Gnostics—had infiltrated the Churchin Colossae. They taught thatthe human body& all forms of matter—all things physical—are corrupted& evil. So, for themGod cld not reallybecome humanw/o corruptingHis divine nature. So, Paul says:“Don’t fall for it.”“Remember the faithyou were taught.“Hold onto this foundational teachingof the Christian faith.”If we let goof this truthwe let goof the real Jesus& real Christianity.God was pleasedto forever unitethe Divine naturew/ Human naturein a human bodywhen His Sonbecame a divine-human being.& in Colossians 1:20Paul tells us whyGod was pleasedto have His Sondwell in a human body. It’s becausethru Christ’s bodyGod will...Colossians 1:20 (NIV)...reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.God the Fatherwas pleasedfor His Sonto become a divine-human beingbcs in His SonGod had a magnificentplan for all creation.God’s plansfor us in His Sonare so much morethan the Churchhas focused onover the last 60 years.God’s plansare so much morethan making a wayfor us to avoid hell& go to heavenwhen we die.God’s plans areto reconcile all thingsin heaven & on earthto Himselfthru His Son.To reconcile meansto to be brought backto a right relationshipw/ God.When God’s Sonbecame a human beingHe forever unitedhumanity to divinity—& became the wayfor humanityto be brought backto God.As human beingsare united to Christin His death& resurrectionin the ChurchGod’s ppl becomea part ofthe new creation& sharein the divine nature. This is one reasonwhy Jesus saidNo one comes tothe Fatherexcept by Jesus. It’s only by beingunited to the Sonthat we can havea right relationshipw/ the Father& be remadein the image of God.That is great newsfor humanity! But God’s plans in ChristGo far beyond humanity.Humanity’s sinsnot only affect usbut the whole creation. The whole creationwas corrupted& brought into bondageto death & decaybcs of humanity’s sins.Soin ChristGod the Father plansto bring all thingsback to Himself.God plansto make peacebtwn God& all creationby recreatingall things thru His Son.As Paul saysin Ephesians 1:9-10Ephesians 1:9–10 (CSB)He made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he purposed in Christas a plan for the right time—to bring everything together in Christ, both things in heaven and things on earth in him.God the Father was pleasedto have all His fulnessdwell in His SonBcs in His SonGod plans to reconcileor reuniteall thingsto a right relationshipw/ God the Father& w/ one another. Why?So that all of creationcan havepeace w/ God& peace w/ one anotherunder the Lordshipof Jesus Christ.Nowwatch how Paulapplies this to usin Colossians 1:21.Colossians 1:21–22 (NIV)Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you...Notice the contrast here.Paul says:Once you werebut now you are. Those two phrasesencompass the whole messageof the gospel.Once you were thisoutside of Christ. But now—in Christ—God makes yousomething new. What are we OUTSIDE of Christ?Once we werealienated frm God.Once we wereenemies of God.Here Paul’s talking abtthe entiretyof humanity. The whole of humanityoutside of Christis alienated—separated— frm God;& enemies of God.& this alienationis not bcs ofanything God has done. Our being alienatedfrm Godis 100% our fault.100%a human problem. We separate ourselvesfrm God.We make ourselvesenemies of Godbcs of ourevil behavior. We’ve all been there& done that. We’ve all made ourselvesenemies of Godbcs we chose to do evil.We messed upthe relationship.Like an unfaithful spousewe turned our backson our Creator& chased after the evil desiresof our own wicked hearts. It was our sinsthat separated usfrm God.We wereGod’s enemiesbcs of our bad behavior.APPLICATION& maybe you’rethere today.Maybe you’reestranged frm God.You’reliving in sin. You’re an enemyof God in your mindbcs of your evil behavior.IF that’s youGod has a messagefor you today.Put dwn your weapons.Stop fightinga battleyou’ll never win.Come & find peace.Come & be reconciledto Godthru His Son.To keep livingas God’s enemywhen He’s offering Youa way to peace w/ Himis the most unwisedecision any of uscld make.Bcs Paul tells usin Hebrews 10:27God’s enemies liveevery day underthe unbearable weightof ain Hebrews 10:27Hebrews 10:27 (NIV)...a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.If you’re God’senemy today. If you’re still doingyour own thing. If you’re livingin lawlessness.Don’t stay there.Don’t end upmeeting Godas a raging firethat will consumeGod’s enemies.God wants somethingdfrnt for you.God does notwant youor anyone elseto remainHis enemies.God lovesHis enemies.& it’s God lovefor His enemiesthat can take usfrm what weonce wereoutside of Christ—to what we are nowin Christ. What are we outside of Christ?Enemies of God—Destined for destruction. What Are We IN Christ?Paul tells us inColossians 1:22He says:Colossians 1:22 (NIV)But now he has reconciled you...But now...is the nowwe experiencein Christ. In Christwe’re reconciledto God.Those wordsare full of hopefor humanity.Bcs those wordsshow usGod offers to erasewhat we once were;to change us;& turn usfrm His enemiesinto dearly loved childrenas part ofa new creationin Christ.God offers His enemiespeace in Christbcs He lovesHis enemies. But loveis so often misunderstoodby humanity.........Especially God’skind of love. What ppl call lovein our current cultureis anything but love. We’re taughtto lovewhen the objectof our loveis lovable. When the objectof our lovehas somethingto offer us.But God’s love—real love—is dfrnt.& as w/all things divinewe see a perfect pictureof God’s lovein God’s Son.God’s divine Sondemonstrated God’sextraordinary lovefor all creationwhen He willingly sufferedthe terrible tortureof the crossto die to saveHis enemies.God’s Son shows us:God’s love isothers focused;God’s love isself-sacrificing;God’s lovecompels Himto not only lay dwn His lifefor His friends; But alsoto lay dwn His lifefor His enemies.Sacrificing for friends& familyyeahWe all get that. But loving & sacrificing forPpl who hate you.Ppl who reject you.Ppl who are thankless& heartless;& cruel & evil; That type of sacrificial loveis not naturalfor any human being. That kind of loveis supernatural. It’s God’skind of love.God’s love compels Himto do goodto His enemies; To constantly call out& plead w/a stubborn& defiant humanity:Turn frm your wicked ways& be brought backinto a right relationshipw/ the supplier& sustainerof life;& the giverof every good gift.God’s love compels HimTo reconcile us to Himselfthru His Son.& how does Godreconcile us thru His Son?In Colossians 1:22Paul says God:Colossians 1:22 (NIV)...has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through [Christ’s physical] death...& in Colossians 1:20Paul says:God chose...Colossians 1:20 (NIV)…through [His Son] to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. It’s so importantwe see this.Jesus hada real physical body.He was nota phantom. He reallybecame human. The fulnessof divinity dwells inthe human bodyof Jesus. He really suffered;really felt pain;really shed His blood;really died;He really rosefrm the grave. He really ascendedinto heaven; He’s really sittingat the right handof the Father—in a glorifiedhuman body.& thru our unionw/ the realhuman body & bloodof the divine-humanSon of Godin the Churchwe’re now sittingw/ Christ in heavenReunited to God.& in Colossians 1:22Paul goes onto tell usone of God’s goalsin reconciling usthru Christ’s body & blood. He says it’s...Colossians 1:22 (NIV)...to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation—God’s goal inuniting us to Christis to make uslike Christ.Christ is Holy.Christ is blameless.Christ is freefrm accusation.God wants tomake usall of those things too.& this happensas ppl are joinedto Christ’s bodyin the Church. In the Churchwe’re beingtransformed by God’s graceinto Christ’s image.Paul expands on thisin Ephesians 5:25-27.He says...Ephesians 5:25–27 (EHV)Husbands, love your wives, in the same way as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for herto make her holy, by cleansing her with the washing of water in connection with the Word.He did this so that he could present her to himself as a glorious church, having no stain or wrinkle or any such thing, but so that she would be holy and blameless. In the endJesus will present usto Himselfas [part of] a glorious Church—a ppl who are like Jesus:Holyblamelessw/o stain or wrinkleor any other blemish. That’s God’s goalfor uniting usto His Son.But we need to noticethere’s a very importantword at the beginningof Colossians 1:23.Notice the wordColossians 1:23 (NIV)Ιf...This word meansthere are conditionswe must meetif we’re gonna reachGod’s goal for us in Christ. If we’re gonna bereconciled to God;have peace w/ God—& be found holyw/o blemish& free frm accusationin God’s sight. What Christ has doneis very powerful. He sacrificed Himselfonce for all. He’s doneeverything necessaryso all of humanitycan be brought backto a right relationshipw/ Godthru Him.But what Christ has donewill only applyto us personallyIF—as Paul says inColossians 1:23 (NIV)...if [we] continue in [the] faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. Now rememberPaul’s writingto true believers.Ppl who haveheard & acceptedthe true gospel.Ppl who werepart of the Church.W/o questionthese pplwere the real deal. They were saints. They had faithin Christ Jesus; They were faithfulto Christ Jesus;& their livesshowed the fruitof their faith& faithfulness. The gospelwas bearing fruitamong them—Especially the fruit ofHoly Spirit inspired love. These pplwere genuine membersof the body of Christ. But Paul warns them—Just as Paul warnsother churchesthroughout his letters—& Paul warns us.If we want the hopeof reconciliation& peace w/ God;If we want to be foundspotlessblameless& free frm accusationwe must continuein the faiththat was once for allentrusted to the saintsin the Church.& continuing in the faithHas two equallyimportant components:(1) What we believe &(2) How we behave.Right belief& right behaviorare equally important. They alwaysgo together. As Paul tells Timothyin 1 Timothy 4:16:1 Timothy 4:16 (NIV)Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.Right doctrine—believing the right things—& a right life—behaving the right way—are both essentialfor salvation. For us to finally realizeour future hopeof salvationwe’ve gotta continueto holdright beliefs abt God.We’ve gotta hold tothe Apostolic Traditionsabt God’s Son;The nature of salvation; The Church& so on.& we’ve alsogotta continueto practiceright behavior.Right behavioris behavior that’s consistentw/ Christ’s commands. The commandswe receive inthe Apostolic Faithwe profess.Behavior that’sholy & blameless.& this is a processthat will notbe completeduntil we leavethis earth.Either thru death.Or when the trumpet blows& Christ comesto get us.We’ve gotta continuein this relationshipw/ Jesuswhere we keep strivingto be found holyblameless & spotlessin Him.That isa life-longprocess.One we must continueto work outif we’re to be reconciled to God...& have peace w/ Godin the end.Peter puts it this wayin 2 Peter 3:13-142 Peter 3:13–14 (NIV)But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.To be found holyBlamelessspotlessfree frm accusationin God’s sight—to have peace w/ God—we must makeevery effort.Christianity is notpassive. We must run the racew/ perseveranceto get the crown of life.It takes daily dedication& discipline. It takes exhaustive efforton our part. Many who startthis fightwill not finish. When the fightgets tough& we find ourselvesbeing pummeledby temptationstribulation& persecutionsome will throw in the towel. Many who start this racewill never crossthe finish line. Some will belured away frmthe narrow roadby seducing spirits& abandon the faith.Others will fall fordoctrines of demons;be led astrayby destructive heresies;& lose connectionw/ Jesus& His body. But althoughthat can happento all of usit does not have tohappen to any of us.If we’ll just heedthe warningswe find in Scripture.Let’s make surewe don’t find ourselvesamong thosewho fall away.Let’s learn& hold on tothe true faith.Let’s hold on tothe true gospel. In Colossians 1:23.Paul says this gospelColossians 1:23 (NIV)...has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.Notice the universal natureof the gospel. The gospel is good newsfor the whole creation. It’s the good newsthat in ChristGod will not onlyreconcile& restore humanityto God;In Christall of creationwill be reconciled to God& recreatedto the glorious splendorof life bfr the fall. When Godcreated everythingHe saidit was very good.He created the heavens& the earth& everything in them.He created humanity& gave humanity authorityto rule overthe perfect earth.Imagine what thatperfect earth was like.On that perfect earthThe landwas not cursed. No thorns or thistles. No dandelionsto ruin your lush lawn.On that perfect earthPain & sorrow;Disease & Deathwere unknown. On that perfect earthThere wasNo abuse of power. No Murder. No Injustice. No Prejudice. No Pride. No Hatred. No Jealousy. No Rage. Racism. or Riots. No sin of any kind.& on that perfect earthThere was perfect peace& harmonybtwn Godhumanity& all creation.& that perfect earthIs what Jesuscame to restoreto God.Not by cleaning upthe current creationbut by makinga new creation.Thru His IncarnationLife, suffering, death,Resurrection & AscensionGod’s divine-human Sonwill bring all of creationback to God.One dayeverything will beunited under Christin the kingdom God’s Son.In a new heavens& new earth. But we don’t have to waitto get a taste of whatthat new creationwill be like.Bcs the Church is—or at leastshld be—a little piece of thathere & now.The Church isa community ofborn againrecreated human beingswho are being shapedinto the imageof God.CONCLUSION& as we closeThere is hopefor this world. But we won’t find itin any planshuman beingscan come up with. The hope for this worldis in becoming a part ofthe kingdom that’s notof this worldin the Church. The only hopefor humanityis the hope held outin the gospel. The hope of beingreunited w/God;& being at peace w/ God& w/ all creationthru God’s Son.Jesus purchased peace w/ God...For all creation...thru His body & blood. In Jesus...All of creation can be...Reconciled...to God;& restored...to its original splendor. If you & Iwant to have a sharein that restorationwe must embracethe true faith. We’ve gotta becomea part of Christ’s bodyin the Church.& then continueestablished & firmin the faith.Until we leavethis earth.Or until Jesuscomes in again in glory. We’ve gottaKeep fighting;Keep Running;Keep the Faith.Stay attachedto the headby staying attachedto the body of Christin the Church.Let’s all hold tight to& strenuously striveto attainThe Hope Held Outin the Gospel.PRAYERLet’s all standfor prayer.LordTHE LORD’S BLESSING
