- INTRODUCTIONToday we’re gonnacontinue our seriesin Colossians.Let’s turn togetherin our Biblesto Colossians 2.& we’re gonnaread verses 1-4.Colossians 2:1-4.& when youfind Colossians 2:1-4in Your BiblePls standfor the readingof God’s Word. The title oftoday’s teaching is:Fight for One Anotherin PrayerIn Colossians 2:1-4the Scriptures say:Colossians 2:1–4 (NIV)I want you to know how hard I am contending for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ,in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. You may be seated.I’m gonna say some words& I want youto noticethe 1st thoughtthat comes to your mind.Contending.Fighting.Struggling.Working Hard.Agonizing.Prayer is probablynot the 1st thingyou thought ofwhen I said those words.I often hear ppldescribe prayer as aconstant conversationbtwn us & God.& there is sometruth in that.We can havea constant conversationw/ Godas we go abtour daily lives. But Scriptural prayeris much morethan havinga conversation w/ God.Prayer is warfare. When we praywe enter intoa spiritual battlefor our souls& the soulsof others. In today’s passagePaul talks abthow he struggledfought& went to warin prayerfor God’s ppl.& that’sjust the typeof prayer lifeGod callsevery one ofHis pplto be engaged in.So, todaywe’ll talk abta few thingswe shld focus onin prayeras we learn toFight for One Anotherin PrayerPRAYERLet’s pray.Lordit’s sucha privilegeto have Yourprecious Words.Open our understandingso we may fullycomprehendthe truths You wantto teach us.Bring our understandingin line w/ the FaithYou once for allentrusted to the saints.& help us live outthat Faiththru Your grace. In Jesus name.Amen.The saints in ColossaeHad heardthe true gospel. They learned itfrm EpaphrasWho was a faithfulminister of Jesuson Paul’s behalf. The saints at Colossaehad truly understoodGod’s grace. They had embracedthe true faith. They were living outthat faith.& they were bearingthe fruitsof the faithas they obeyedthe commandsof the Lord Jesus.& thenthe test came.Their faithfulnessto the Apostolic Faiththey had been taughtwas being testedby false teachers. They neededto fightfor the faiththat was once for allentrusted to the saints.& although Paulhad never metMost of the pplin ColossaePaul wants them to knowthey’re not alonein this fight.Paul hasalready beenfighting for themSince the very 1st dayHe heard abttheir faith in Christ.& Paul tells ushow he was fightingIn Colossians 1:9.He says:Colossians 1:9 (NIV)...since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you.The weapon of warfarePaul wieldedin this fight for God’s pplwas the mighty weaponof prayer.Paul continuallyasked Godto fill God’s pplw/ a complete comprehensionof God’s willthru the wisdom& understandingthe HS gives us.Paul’s not praying:For the HSto reveal something newto God’s ppl. No!Everything Paulsays in this letter& all of Paul’s prayerswere focused onhelping God’s pplcling tofully understand& fight forwhat they’d alreadybeen taught—which wasthe Apostolic Faith.& Notice inColossians 2:1Paul tells themhow intenseHis fight for them was.He says:Colossians 2:1 (NIV)I want you to know how hard I am contending for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally.& in Colossians 1:29.Paul says:Colossians 1:29 (NIV)...I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.RememberI said last weekthose words describestrugglingstraining& agonizingin sustainedprayer.Thruthe divine energy of Christworking powerfully in himPaul wasstrenuously& continuouslycontending—fighting very hard—in focusedintense prayerfor God’s pplto stand firm in the faith.& this is the sameprayer life—the same fight—God calls allHis saints to engage in.APPLICATIONGod expectsall of us toFight for One Another.I did not say:God expects usto fight withone Another.God expects usto fightfor one another.& not w/wordily weapons. Not w/guns & grenades. Not w/flamethrowers or fists. No!God calls usto fight forOne Anotherw/the weapon of prayer.Paul wasvery seriousabt prayer?& especially prayerfor God’s ppl.Paul knewthe powerof prayer.Paul knewthat whenGod’s ppl praywe’re not justspeaking wordsinto the airthat no one hears. No!The prayersof God’s pplare powerful & effective. The prayersof God’s pplcan move mountains. The prayersof God’s pplcan change outcomes. The fervent prayersof God’s pplRise upto the throneof the Almighty Godwho has promisedto answer uswhen we prayaccording to His will.APPLICATIONOne of myfavoriteBible verses:is Hebrews 4:16.There we findthis incredible invitationfor every child of God.Hebrews 4:16 (NIV)Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. When we prayWe come closeto the glorious throneof Almighty God.& the Glorious Godwho dwells inunapproachable lightbends His earto hear the prayersof His ppl.At God’s thronewe drink deeply frmthe fountainof God’s marvelous mercy& abundant grace. At God’s throneWe finda gracious Heavenly Fatherwho cares for us& will meet our needs& the needsof those for whomwe pray.Paul knew this.Paul believed this. So,Paul prayedconstantly & confidentlyas he foughtfor God’s ppl.& in Colossians 2:2 & 3Paul tells usexactly whyhe was fightingfor God’s pplthru prayer. He says:Colossians 2:2–3 (NIV)My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. The Colossian Churchhad been taughtthe true Faith. They had acceptedthe true Faith.& they were living outthe true Faith. The true Faith isthe teachings & practicesthat Christ gaveto His Apostles—who then handedthose teaching & practicesdwn to the saintsin the Church. This is what we callthe Apostolic Faith. But some pplfrm among the Colossiansstarted to say:the truthsthe Apostles taughtis not enough. There’s something moreWe need. There’s thisHidden—Secretwisdom & knowledgeGod did not revealto the Apostles. No!According to thesefalse teachersGod was nowrevealing something newto a select fewin the Church.& they claimedGod’s ppl nowhad to addthese additional thingsto the Apostolic Faithto be right w/ God.& as you can imaginethat kind of teachingcld discouragesome ppl& lead them awayfrm the True Faith.SoPaul constantlyand agonizingly prayedthat God’s ppl may beencouraged in heart& united in love—a love for the truth—so they can havethe full richesof complete understanding. So they can havethe full assuranceing the Faiththey’d been taughtthey had the fulnessof wisdom & knowledge. The completed revelation. As Paul saysin Colossians 1:25-26Colossians 1:25–26 (NIV)I have become [the Church’s] servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness—the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. In the Word of God—in the messagethe Apostles preached—we find God’s full& completedrevelation. The Gospel revealseverythingthat all the treasuresof wisdom & knowledgeare to be foundin Christ. The truths taughtby the Apostlesare the true Faith—& the completed Faiththat was handed dwnonce for allto the the saintsin the Church.Nothing needsto be added toor taken away frmthe Apostolic Faith. It’s thru that Faiththat we come toa complete knowledgeof God’s will& learn to live livesthat please Himin every way.Soto combatthe false teacherswho said we needadditional revelationfrm GodPaul prayedthat God wld encouragethe hearts of His ppl& unite themin love for the truthof the revelationthey’d already received. As Paul saysColossians 1:9–10 (NIV)For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way...The Word behindthe word ‘knowledge’ isἐπίγνωσιν.It meansto come to understandand be assuredthat something is true& valid. So Paul constantly prayedthat thru the HSGod’s pplwld come to completelyunderstand& be assuredthat all the wisdom& knowledge they needabt God& how to live for Himis found in the Apostolic Faith. This is the same thingPaul said to the Churchin Thessalonica. In 1 Thessalonians 1:4-5.Paul says:1 Thessalonians 1:4–5 (NLT)We know, dear brothers and sisters, that God loves you and has chosen you to be his own people. For when we brought you the Good News, it was not only with words but also with power, for the Holy Spirit gave you full assurance that what we said was true. The HSDid & still doeswhat Jesus saidHe wld do.He led theApostles into all truth.& HS leads usinto all truthby giving usthe assurancethat the Message—The Gospel of Christpreached by the Apostlesthe Apostolic Faith—is the truth. This is whatPaul is praying forin Colossians 2:2.He kept prayingthat God wldEncouragethe hearts of His pplThru the HS.Strengthentheir heartsthru the HSto have a love for& to keep believingthe only truththat can save them.To stand firmin God’s will;By continuingin the faiththe were taught& not be led astrayby harmful heresies.& in our fightfor one anotherin prayer. We need to praythe same thing.APPLICATIONThere’sonly one faith. There’s onlyone wayto the Father. We must gothru Jesus.Jesus is the waythe truth& the Life& nobody comesto the Fatherexcept thru Him.But howdo we get to the Fatherthru Jesus? We go thru Jesusby believing& living outThe One faiththat was gvn to Jesusby the Father. The FaithJesus then gaveto His Apostles. The Faiththe Apostles handeddwn to the Saintsin the Church.Like PaulLet’s keep prayingthat God’s pplMay be encouragedin our heartsto love the truth& keep believingthe true Faith.Let’s keep prayingThat God’s pplwld beunited in loveof the truth.Bcs when God’s pplare encouraged in heart& united in loveof the truthNotice what:Paul expected...God’s ppl to experience...As a result of...these prayers. In Colossians 2:2...Paul says they will...Colossians 2:2–3 (NIV)My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ,in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. The falseteachers in Colossaehad a fascinationw/ finding mysteriesonly they cld seein God’s Word. They were very big onhidden wisdom& hidden knowledge. They went on & onabt things they cld seebut otherscld not see.As Paul says inColossians 2:18 (NIV)Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.To correctthir errorsPaul usestheir own languageagainst them.He reminds them abtthe only mysterythe only wisdom& knowledge that matter.Paul says...“God’s mystery“is Christ.“God’s true wisdom“& God’s true knowledge“Are hidden in Christ—in the Church.”So, it’s only thruknowing Christthru the Churchthat we gainall the treasuresof true wisdom& true knowledge.Paul says all of this:To encourageGod’s ppl to“Hang in there.“You’re onthe right path.“When you have Christ“You have everything“you need.“Don’t fall forthe fine-soundingargumentsof false teachers.”“Just keep the faith.“Just living in“the truth.“Keep holding on“to Christ.”Keep living w/ Himas Your Lord.“Bcs in Christ“You have“all the treasures“of true wisdom“& true knowledge.”Paul kept fightingin prayerpleading w/ GodTo encourage the heartsof God’s ppl;& unite God’s pplin love for the truthSo, that we wld havecomplete understandingof everythingthat’s oursin Christ. We don’t needto lookelsewhere. We don’t needto seek somethinghidden. All we need to knowabt God& how to liveto please Himhas been revealedin the mysteryof Christ& can be foundin the Church. So,Paul agonizedin persistent prayerfor the saintsto recognizethose truths.& we need to do the same.[Transition:Paul was not the onlyperson who prayedin this wayfor the saints.]In Colossians 4:12-13Paul tells ushow a man named Epaphras—prayed for God’s ppl.Paul says:Colossians 4:12–13 (NIV)Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus...is always wrestling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured.I vouch for him that he is working hard for you and for those at Laodicea and Hierapolis.Notice those word:Always wrestlingin prayer for you.Working hardfor you in prayer.Just like PaulEpaphras foughtfor God’s pplas he agonizedin prayer.& just like Paul:Epaphras was prayingthat the saintsmay stand firmin all the will of Godmature & fully assuredthat the Faiththey’d been taughtwas the only Faiththey neededto know& do God’s will.Epaphras fought hardas he constantly prayedfor God’s pplto stand firmin the One truth; To continuein the One faiththey were taught;& to grow& bcm fully mature& fully assuredin the faith. That’s the kind of prayerBoth Paul & Epaphraswere constantlyengaged in.& that’sthe kind of prayerWe allneed to be engaged inas we fightfor one another.CONCLUSIONAs we close:I want us to thinkSeveral questionsToday’s passageshld prompt usto ask ourselves. Are we concerned abtGod’s pplbeing fully assured thatthe Apostolic Faithis all we needto know& do God’s will? Are we concerned abtGod’s pplbecoming maturein Christ? If soThen are weconcerned enoughto fight for one anotherin prayer? Are we willingto follow the exampleof Paul & Epaphras& continually contendfor God’s ppl in prayer? Both Paul & Epaphras:were leadersin the church.& praying for God’s pplis built intoour job description. The leaders of the churchare to devote ourselves fullyto prayer & ministryof the Word. But the callto pray for God’s pplis not just the workof church leaders. It’s a workwe’re all called to.Leaders aremerely examplesto the flock.& this is whyin Colossians 4:2-3Paul encouragesall the saints toColossians 4:2–3 (NIV)Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.Prayer is the workof all God’s ppl. We’re a kingdomof priests.Priest’s prayfor God’s pplto love the truth& do God’s will.If we’re not prayingwe’re not fulfillingour obligationsas God’s calledchosen& beloved children.& we’re not fulfillingour responsibilitiesas a royal priesthood. So, what shld we do?Let’s make upour mindsRight nowThat thru grace of Godthru God’sdivine energyat work in uswe’re gonna fightfor one anotherin prayer.Right where you’re sittingAsk God to give youthe willthe ability& the discipline...To devote yourselfto fighting in prayerfor God’s pplto stand firmin the Faith[LONG PAUSE.............]& thenDon’t make it complicatedJust go& do it.If you’re a child of God:You’re a priestof the most-High God.& God callsHis prieststo fightfor His pplin prayer.Answer that call.& know that Godnever calls usto anythingthat we cannot dothru His power. So, let’s allmake up our mindsThat we’re gonnaDevote ourselvesto prayer.Let’s startw/ the prayersof Paul & Epaphras.Let’ praythat God’s pplMay be encouragedin heart;Let’s praythat God’s pplMay be unitedin Love for the Truthrevealed by the Apostles.& let’s praythat God’s pplMay be fully assured& stand firmin all God’s will;& bcm fully maturein Christby living outthe Faith of the Apostles.Today.Tomorrow.& every dayfor the restof our lives.Let’sFight for One AnotherIn Prayer.PRAYERLet’s all stand for prayer.Father, we thank you....For our brothers & sisters in Christ. We thank You....for the privilege we have...To pray for Your ppl.Lord, help us to see...The seriousness of this calling....You’ve placed on all your ppl.Thru your grace...Give us the will to pray.Give us the ability to pray.&Give us the discipline to pray.Encourage the hearts of your ppl;Unite us all in love;Help us to stand firm....In Your Will.& bcm fully mature in Christ.Thru the powerof Your HS.In Jesus name.Amen.
