- Title: Living an Effective and Productive LifeText: 2 Peter 1:3-11INTRODUCTIONLet’s turn togetherin our Biblesto 2nd Peter.2nd Peterchapter 1.& we’re gonnaread verses 3-11.2nd Peter 1:3-11.& when you find thatin your BiblePls stand forthe readingof God’s Word. The title oftoday’s teaching is:ProdIn 2 Peter 1:3-11the Scriptures say:2 Peter 1:3–11 (NIV)His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. You may be seated. How do we livean effective& productive life?Depending onwho you askYou might getdfrnt answersto to that question. But for uswho are followersof Jesuswe knowan effective& productive lifeis a godly lifewhere we followthe Lord’swill for our lives. In today’s passagePeter teaches usat least twoequally important truthsthat will help usdo that.As we learnHow to livean effective& productive life?PRAYERLet’s pray.Father we thank Youfor your Word.We ask youto open our earsTo hear the voiceof Jesus.Open our eyesto see the truth.& give us the will & ability…to follow Jesuswherever He leads us.In Jesus name.Amen.[Transition: The 1st truthwe must knowto live effective & productive lives is...]God gives us EVERYTHING we need for a godly life.Notice how Peter starts verse 3.Talking abt GodPeter says...2 Peter 1:3 (NIV)His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life...The verb “has gvn”points to acompleted actionThat hascontinuing results. When we’reborn againGod gives us the giftof the HS.& when we havethe HSWe have God’sdivine power—the power of God—at work in usGiving us everythingwe needto livea godly life.& as Petercontinues in verse 3He tells us howGod gives usHis divine power. He saysGod’s divine power comes to us…2 Peter 1:3 (NIV)...through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.God’s glory & goodnessare two aspectsof God’s character.Peter’s sayingGod’s characteris praiseworthy& excellent.God wants us to knowHis praiseworthy& excellent character.& Peter does not meanto knowin the sense ofhead knowledge. But to knowthru experience& participation.God wants usto share in—to experience—His gloryHis excellence& all the other attributesof HisHoly Character. So that by sharing inHis divine nature;& divine pwrWe can livepraiseworthy && excellent lives.Lives thatbring glory& praise to God.God gives usHis divine powerThru anexperiential knowledgeof His character. And where do weexperience knowing Godin this way?Two places:Thru His Body.& Thru His Book.Thru the Church& thru the Scriptures. The Church isthe Body of Christon earth. The Scriptures arethe Bookthru which Christspeaks to& thru the Church.Thru the Church& thru the ScripturesWe learn exactlywhat God is like.& we learnwho we can beLike Himas we receive His grace—as we experienceHis divine power—in the Church.Peter puts it this wayin 2 Peter 1:42 Peter 1:4 (NIV)Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.Thru God’s glory & goodnessGod has gvn His pplmany very great& precious promises.Promises we findin the Body.& in the Book.ILLUSTRATIONWe see three:Of those precious promisesin today’s passage.God promisesTo give useverything we needto live a godly life.God promisesWe can escapethe corruptionof sinful worldcaused by evil desires.& God promisesWe can overcomeevery evil desire.By learning& applyingthe promises we findin the Church& the ScripturesWe participatein God’s divinenature.APPLICATIONSo, to know what God is like—To know what you& I can be likethru God’s power—We need to knowGod’s promises. We learn God’s promisesthru His Body& His Book. So, we all needto keep gatheringlike we’re doing nowto hear God’s promisesw/ other membersof the body—Where we can hearthe promisesof God.& outside ofthese gatheringswe needto getthe Book.Readthe Book.Listen tothe Bookbe readby others.Study the Book.& as we approachthe Body& the Bookwe shld to do sow/ this understanding:If we’re united w/ Christin His Bodythen everyvery great& precious promiseto the Bodyin the Book—That’s all ours!Bcs thru His lifedeath& resurrectionJesus inheritedall the promises.& thru our unionw/ Himwe inheritall the promises too.I think we often readthe promises of Scripturethru an earthly filter. We put our limitationson God.But listen:The Churchis a supernatural body& the Scripturesare a supernatural book.Breathed out bya supernatural God.So our natural mindscannot help usunderstandthe things of God.We need Godto give usSupernatural eyes.So we can truly seeThe hope. The inheritance& the powerThat’s available to usin Christthru God’s promises. So we needto keep asking Godto help ussee & acceptHis precious promises.& trust Godto fulfill His promisesThru His divine power. So, to livean effective& productive lifeWe must knowGod gives useverything we needfor a godly lifethru His divine power.& we experiencethat divine powerthrough the preciouspromises we findin Christ’s body& Christ’s book.Thru God’s promiseswe’re able to participatein God’s divine nature& live effective& productive livesthat bring glory& praise to God.That isGod’s promiseto His ppl.But Peter is not finished. As w/ nearly everyother promisein the Scripturesthere is a conditionto receiving this promise.[Transition: & that brings usto the 2nd truthWe must knowto live effective& productive lives.]God goads us to make every effort to live a godly life. (1:5-11)In 2 Peter 1:5Peter says:2 Peter 1:5 (NIV)For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith...What reasonis Peter talking abt?Why shld wemake every effortto add to our faith?Bcs God has gvn useverything we needto live a godly lifethru knowing Him....Then you & Ihave gotta get busy& stay busy addingto our faithto live outthat godly life. Many havewrongly taughtwe cannot addanything to faithin Jesus.& if we tryto add to faiththen we cannotbe saved. But those falseteachers knowneitherthe Scripturesnor the power of God.Faith in Jesusis onlythe beginning.Submitting to Christas our Lord;Turning frm sin;Turning to God;Being Baptizedinto Christ;Being born againThru water& the SpiritThat’s justthe beginning. That’s how we geton the wayto salvation. That’s how weget united to Christ. But afterwe’re unitedto Christwe’ve gotta growin our salvation.& to growwe’ve gottaadd some thingsto our faith. We’ve gotta cooperatew/ Godto be transformedinto Christ’s image.& this means:Living a godly lifetakes workon our part. We’ve all gottaput forthstrenuous & sustainedeffort.......Working w/ allthe energyGod gives usthru His graceTo livea godly life.We must makeevery effortTo add Christ’scharacter qualitiesto our faith. The morethese qualitiesare in us &are increasingin our liveThe more wewill look likethe Lord Jesus.& that’s the goalGod has for us.That’s what aneffective& productive lifewill end up.That’s whyGod allows usto share inHis divine nature. It’s to make uslike Jesus. To conform usto His image. The imagethat was lostwhen Adam & Evechose to sin.So, God’s Sonbecame one of us.He united ourhuman naturew/ Hisdivine nature.& humanity& divinityhave been foreverunited inGod’s divine-human Son—The Lord Jesus Christ.& thru our unionw/ ChristOur human natureis healed.& the divine imageof our glorious Godis restored in us.God’s Son cameto rescue humanityfrm the trash heapof hell.& recycle our lives. So we can betransformed intoprecious stonesTo be usedin the household of God.Christ became one of usSo, that thru our unionw/ HimWe can liveeffective& productive lives.Lives where we’realways addingGodly qualitiesto our character.Qualities thatbring us closer& closerto the radiant imageof God’s Son.In Christ—In the Church—We’re becomingthe righteousnessof God.That means:We’re taking onthe qualitiesof His divine nature. We’re becoming righteousJust as Jesusis righteous. As He wasso are wein this world. We’re livingas Jesus lived. We’re lovingas Jesus loved. That’s God’s goalfor all of us.But again:this will only happenIF....IF........We makeevery effortto add Christ’scharacter qualitiesto our faith.& Peter goes onin 2 Peter 1:5-7to list eightof these character qualities. He urges us to2 Peter 1:5–7 (NIV)...make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.Notice Peter’s listbegins w/ faith& ends w/ love.Faith isthe starting pointLove isthe end goal.Everyone ofthese ChristianCharacter qualitieslead us to love God& love othersjust like Jesus did.Let’s talk brieflyabt these qualities.Firstgoodness.Here Peter echoswhat he saida few verses earlier.God called usby His own goodnessto a lifeof goodness.A life of moral excellence.A life where wedo to othersonly what wewant others to doto us.& also a lifewhere lavish good worksdone to allbecomes 2nd natureto us.This is one reasonGod recreated humanityin Christ. As Paul reminds us inEphesians 2:8–10 (NIV)For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.Goodness—expressed thru good worksdone thru God’s graceis what we’re createdto do in Christ. We do goodBcs we have the Natureof the Onewho is goodin us.Bcs we participateIn Hisdivine natureHe makes us good.& as we stay connectedto the fount frmwhichALL goodness flowsthe goodness of Godwill flow into us.& thenit will flowout of us.& express itselfin good deedsdone to others. But we must applyevery effortTo add goodnessto our faith.[Transition: The 2ndcharacter qualityWe must add to our faith is…]Knowledge. The kind of knowledgePeter has in mindis a knowledgethat increases ourunderstanding& experience ofthe one true God.This is a knowledgewe can only gainif we’re activein Christ’s bodyin the Church.& absorbed inChrist’s Bookin the Scriptures. So many of usclaim to lovethe Scripturesblv the Scriptures& cherish the Scriptures. But how many of usare dedicatedto knowingthe Scriptures?Knowing the Scripturesin a waythat changes our livestakes disciplinededication& determination. So, we must makeevery effortto add knowledgeto our faith.[Transition: Another character qualityWe must add to our faith is]Self-control.Christian’s shld be knownas pplWho are ableto control ourselves. To control our tendencies.our tempers.& our tongues. To control our appetitesOur attitudes& our actions.& I blvIf we Christianswld stop makingevery excusefor why wecannot control ourselvesin this or that area;& if we wldstart makingevery effort toTo be self-controlled inall areas of our livesI blv most ofthe problems pplstruggle w/in the Churchwld vanish.ILLUSTRATIONWhat if we made every effortto be self-controlled in…What we eat. What we drink. How we dress& where we go.What we read.watch.& listen to.What if we madeevery effort to beself-controlled inHow we spendour money. How we spendour time.& who we spendour time w/.What if we wereself-controlledso we cld beconsistent & disciplinedin our spiritual lives.NowI don’t stand hereas one who hasmastered all of this. But as afellow follower of Jesuswho’s still learninghow to applythese things. So, let’s relyon God’s divine powerto give us the abilityto make every effortTo add self-controlto our faith.[Transition: Another character quality…We must add to our faith is…]Perseverance. This character qualityallows us to courageouslykeep living for GodEven in the faceof Strong opposition& evil. When we persevereeven thru tough timesWe show Godwe trust Himto keep His promises.& cultivatingthis character qualityWill becomeeven more important& more challengingAs the Day of the Lorddraws near.Living a godly lifeIs not easyin an evil world. But we need topatiently endureto the end.We will not be savedif we do not addperseveranceto our faith. As Paul reminds usin Hebrews 6:12Hebrews 6:12 (NIV)We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.Only by addingperseveranceto our faithwill we inheritGod’s promises. So, we must be sureWe’re making every effortTo add perseveranceto our faith.[Transition: Another character quality…We must add to our faith is…]Godliness:This character quality is all abt…Putting our religioninto practice.& yesI really did usethe word “religion.”The word ‘religion’has been mostlymisunderstoodIn the modern church. You might’ve heardor seen the popular“Christianity“Is not a religion“But a relationship“w/Jesus.”& I’ll admitthat sounds good.It looks goodon a T-shirt.But the problem isThat is NOTa true statement. The statementassumes we caneither have religionor a relationshipw/ Jesusbut we cannothave both. But that’s justnot true.Christianity is abta relationshipw/ Jesus.More preciselya relationshipw/ God the Fatherthru Jesus. But Christianity isalso a religion. We cannot havea relationshipw/ God the Fatherthru JesusOutsidethe Christian religion. The Christian religionIs a certain setof beliefs & practicesHanded dwn to Jesusby the Father.Handed dwnto the Apostlesby Jesus.& then handed dwnto the Churchby the Apostles.& it’s only thruthe Christian Religionthat ppl can get in& stay in a right relationshipw/ God the Fatherthru Jesus Christ.Christianity is indeeda religion& the only religionGod the Fatheraccepts. As James remind usin James 1:27.James 1:27 (NIV)Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. This iswhat Peter’s talking abtWhen he sayswe must make every effortTo add godlinessto our faith. We must makeevery effortto put our religioninto practice.& that includesDoing good to othersGiving to the poor.& living a holy lifeBy keeping ourselvesfrm being pollutedby the world. We must makeevery effortTo put our religioninto practice.[Transition: Another character quality…We must add to our faith is…]Mutual affection. The Greek word hereis φιλαδέλφια.You might recognizethat word. What does that sound like?Philadelphia.& you may knowPhiladelphiais called the“City of Brotherly love.”& this is why.The word PhiladelphiameansBrotherly loveor mutual affection.& when Peteruses this word:He’s talking abthaving a true affectionfor other believers;A familialtype of love.Other Christiansare a part ofGod’s family—they’re a partof our family.& we shld havea certain affectionfor them. But notice Peter says:It takes every effortTo add this affectionto our faith.Just like in any otherfamily relationshipIt’s not always easyto show brotherly loveto our brothers & sistersin Christ.Sometimesour brothers &sistersSay thingswe don’t like. They do thingswe don’t like.PplEven ppl we lovecan get onour nerves. But we’re commandedto make every effortTo allow God’s graceto work in us.& give us a greater affectionfor our brothers& sisters in Christ.& one waywe can makethis affection grow is& by addinga finalcharacteristicto our faith.[Transition: & the final characteristicWe must add to our faith is…]Love:We must make every effortTo learnto love othersas God loves us.God’s love for usis a self-sacrificiallove.A love thaturges usto lay dwn our livesfor others.& in 1 John 3:16John tells uswhat it meansto lay dwnour lives for others. He starts bydefining what love is.& it’s so importantthat we let the Scripturesdefine love for us.Especially in a culturethat has a whole lotto say abt lovebut has no cluewhat real love is.John says:1 John 3:16 (NIV)This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.Love leads usto lay dwn our livesfor others.& John goes onin verse 17to tell us howto apply thisin practical terms. He says:1 John 3:17–18 (NIV)If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. It’s easy to saywe loveone another. It’s much dfrntto show we loveone another.Loving one anotherMeans we lay dwnour lives for others.& we lay dwnour lives for othersWhen we usewhat we haveto meet the needsof othersespecially in the Church. We must makeevery effortTo add thatkind of loveChrist-like loveto our faith.NowAs we went thruthis list:Christlike character qualitieswe need to addto our faithLike meYou may have found placesWhere these qualitiesneed to increasein your life.Don’t be discouraged.Peter’s purposeis not to discouragebut encourage us.We need to understanddevelopingChristlike character qualitieswill take a tonof work on our part.& this is somethingwe need to keep doing. As Peter says in 2 Peter 1:82 Peter 1:8 (NIV)For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. How many of uswant to be effective& productivein our knowledgeof the Lord Jesus? We’re not contentw/ a false Christianitythat talks abtknowing God—But has not experiencedthe life-transforminggrace of God.We wanta Christianitythat has power.Real Power!Divine power! To have thatkind of a Christian life—which is reallythe ONLY Christian life—Everything else isjust counterfeit Christian. To have the truthChristian lifeWe must possessthe character qualitiesPeter mentioned.& those qualitiesmust be always increasingin our lives. This meansThere’s alwaysroom to grow. The Christian lifeis a continual processWhereby we’re constantlybeing transformedas we learn& submit ourselvesto God’s will& walk in His grace.& this glorious Christian life:Is available toeveryone of us.Anyone of uswho will allowGod’s divine powerto energize us.& who will makeevery effortto add to our faith. We will participatein God’s nature& live a lifethat’s pleasing to GodAs we bcmmore & more like God.Now......what abt pplWho do notadd these qualitiesto their faith?Peter has some strong wordsfor them in 2 Peter 1:92 Peter 1:9 (NIV)But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.Peter’s talking abt someonewho’s spiritual sightis really messed up.They did not dowhat’s necessaryto grow in a trueknowledge of Godso they becomeblinded to the truth.& they’re no longerable to see the truth. They’re eyes are blindedTheir hearts hard.Their conscience seared. They do thingsthey said theywld never do.& as Peter saysin 2 Peter 2:20-222 Peter 2:20–22 (NIV)If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.”So, we don’t wanna belike the ppl Peterdescribes here.& we never needto be like them.Bcs as Peter tellsin 2 Peter 1:102 Peter 1:10 (NIV)Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble...Notice Peter again sayswe must makeevery effort. This timeTo confirmour calling& election. He’s simply saying:Make every effortto be sure youcontinue in the faithyou were taught;until the end.So, Peter says:We need to get busy& stay busy.Making every effortTo confirmour calling & election. We need to be abtour Father’s businessKeeping our handto the plow;Never looking back;Always moving forward;Keeping our eyeson the prize.Day in Day outWe need to staylaser focusedOn developingChristian characterAs if our lives dependedon this.Bcs the truth isOur livesdo depend on this.We must make surewe’re putting forththe effort it takesto enterthe kingdom of God.& listen again:To God’s preciouspromise to us.If we make every effort…To do the thingswe’ve talked abthere today. We will never stumble. The Greek is even more emphatic.Peter’s saying:“We will neverever stumble.”That’s a greatpromise. That’s a preciouspromise. That’s a promisewe need to embrace.Especially in a church culturethat seems to thinkStumbling & fallingis the NormalChristian Life.Let’s believeGod’s Word.God is faithful; He will keep His promises. If you & I:Will do the thingsPeter describesin today’s passage. If we keep onmaking every effortTo addChrist’s character qualitiesto our faith; If we keep onmaking every effortTo confirmour calling & election; Then we willnever ever stumble. That’s a guarantee frm God’s Word.CONCLUSIONAs we close:& at the endof this life........When the Lordcalls us home. When we shedthe temporaryfor the eternalPeter tells uswhat we haveto look forward toin 2 Peter 1:11.He says ifyou do these things2 Peter 1:11 (NIV)...you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. That’s what we’rehoping for. We’re looking fwd& looking upwardto our eternal homeIn the eternal kingdomof our Lord Jesus Christ.& ifwe keep addingChrist’s character qualitiesto our faithWe’ll receive a warm welcomefrm the Lordinto His eternal kingdomeither when we leavethis earthor when Jesus comesback again& the kingdomsof this worldbecome the kingdomof our God& His Messiah. That’s good news! That’s big stuff!Let’s makeevery effortto make surewe enter intoChrist’s eternal kingdom.PRAYERLet’s all stand for prayer.Father, we thank YouFor giving useverything we needto live a godly life.We thank Youfor Your very great& precious promises.& for allowing usto participatein Your divine naturethru those promises.Help us all to keep makingevery effortTo be conformedto the imageof the Lord Jesus. So we can allreceive a rich welcomeinto His eternal kingdom. In Jesus name.Amen.
