THE TRUTH ABOUT TRUTH (8)
This series of articles has examined false ideas about the nature of truth common is the religious world and far too common in the church. Put simply and logically:
It is a false view of the truth to hold that it does not need to be defended.
Jude verse 3 says to “contend earnestly for the faith.” The expression “contend earnestly” signifies that we should regard ourselves as combatants in the battle to defend the truth against all who deny or attack it. The word “earnestly” indicates a battle of great intensity.
Paul said he was “set for the defence of the gospel” (Phil 1:16). Peter placed on us the obligation of “being ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason concerning the hope that is in you…” (1 Pet 3:15). The word translated “answer” actually means “defense.” We are instructed to be ready to defend the truth against any challenge which may arise against it.
Studying the life of our Lord is helpful here. He was almost constantly involved in the defense of what is true and right against that which is false and wrong. Paul also engaged in what we today would call debating. He defended the truth.
The church grew rapidly during both the first century and the nineteenth century. During both of these centuries, gospel preachers were involved in the defense of the truth in public debates. Should we not return to this? By way of every means of communication, blatant challenges to New Testament Christianity are being made. Should we not rise up, accept these challenges, and defend the truth of the gospel of Christ? I challenge every member of the church to recognize this truth.
We can stop the mouths of those among us who deny the fundamental truths of the gospel. By a valiant defense of the church we can prevent many weak “babes in Christ” from being carried into apostasy.
It is good, even essential, to preach on the moral principles of the Christian life. But such preaching alone is not going to awaken the denominational and skeptical world out of their false ways. For this to be done, the “whole counsel of God” must be preached with great fervor.
