Humanly Hopeless

Kircubbin Community Church, Sept 11th, 2020

Humanly hopeless

Pathetic self pity

Anxious anger

Rebellion ready...

God's people about to be desecrated, defeated and dead...

And God's infuriating response -

"The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Exodus 14:14

Of all the things to ask us to do LORD, you pick the one thing that we find impossible - you made us creative, planners, do-ers, helpers, fighters, jealous for our good name and our best cause. You made us survivors. You made us in your own image but to remind us who you are and that we are just your creations sometimes (and too often for us!) you bring us to the edge of the uncrossable Red Sea and you trap us in with the fearsome and undefeatable army machine of the Egyptians (or illness or losing our livelihood or failure or broken relationships or abuse or self loathing or exhaustion or loneliness or grief...what does that terrifying army look like for you?) And then you say something that only a perfect, all knowing, all powerful and lavishly loving Father can and would say:

"The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Exodus 14:14

The one thing...the one thing that we find nigh on impossible to do.

Please Father, help us, whatever our situation to remember this verse to "be still" and to regularly put it into practice. Help us to learn more and more, and put into practice more and more, being still and allowing your Holy Spirit to fill us and work. Teach us about this and apply it to us actively through these next months of learning and growing through reading, studying and preaching through the Acts of the Holy Spirit (or The Continuing Acts of Jesus Christ.)

Have a read of Exodus ch.14. We are so like the Israelites BUT fortunately God is still the same wonderful God who loves to save his people! Be still!
