  • Jesus’ parents were chosen for their character and obedience

    Mary
In the lineage of King David
Poor - Turtle doves instead of lambs for sacrifices at the sanctuary
    Young, single, virgin
Lived in a remote city in Galilee - Nazareth
Highly favored by God - dignified
    Obedient to God
    Luke 1:26–38 NLT
26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, 27 to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. 28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!” 29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. 30 “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!” 34 Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” 35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. 36 What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month. 37 For the word of God will never fail.” 38 Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.
    Engaged
When once became engaged it was as good as being married already in terms of committment
In order to break the engagement, one had to obtain a divorce
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you...”
    Ecclesiastes 11:5 NLT
5 Just as you cannot understand the path of the wind or the mystery of a tiny baby growing in its mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the activity of God, who does all things.
    Psalm 139:15–16 NLT
15 You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. 16 You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.
    1 Timothy 3:16 NLT
16 Without question, this is the great mystery of our faith: Christ was revealed in a human body and vindicated by the Spirit. He was seen by angels and announced to the nations. He was believed in throughout the world and taken to heaven in glory.
    Jeremiah 31:22 NLT
22 How long will you wander, my wayward daughter? For the Lord will cause something new to happen— Israel will embrace her God.”
It is a new thing created in the earth (Jer. 31:22), concerning which we must not covet to be wise above what is written.
Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible

    Lessons From Mary

Anyone can be an instrument of God no matter your life circumstances
We decide our response to God
Trust God no matter what it looks like
Those in whom Christ is formed will show it: it will be found to be a work of God which he will own. Now we may well imagine, what a perplexity this might justly occasion to the blessed virgin. She herself knew the divine original of this conception; but how could she prove it? She would be dealt with as a harlot. Note, After great and high advancements, lest we should be puffed up with them, we must expect something or other to humble us, some reproach, as a thorn in the flesh, nay, as a sword in the bones. Never was any daughter of Eve so dignified as the Virgin Mary was, and yet in danger of falling under the imputation of one of the worse crimes; yet we do not find that she tormented herself about it; but, being conscious of her own innocence, she kept her mind calm and easy, and committed her cause to him that judgeth righteously. Note, those who take care to keep a good conscience may cheerfully trust God with the keeping of their good names, and have reason to hope that he will clear up, not only their integrity, but their honour, as the sun at noon day.
Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible
    Joseph
In the lineage of King David
    Carpenter or craftsman
May have been much older than Mary
    Matthew 1:18–25 NLT
18 This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. 20 As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: 23 “Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’ ” 24 When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. 25 But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.

    Lessons From Joseph

He was a man of integrity
He could have had Mary stoned to death (Deut. 22:23-24)
    Decided to divorce her quietly
By faith, he believed God (James 2:23)
“Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith. He was even called the friend of God.”
At the height of our perplexity, God sends the Word we need to liberate us from our trouble!
    Obedience brought the gift
