WELCOME AND OPENING PRAYER

SONG (Contemporary) “Christmas Offering”

Over the skies of Bethlehem appeared a star

While angels sang to lowly shepherds

Three wise men seeking truth traveled from afar

Hoping to find the child from Heaven

Falling on their knees

They bowed before the humble Prince of Peace

I bring an offering of worship to my King

No one on earth deserves the praises that I sing

Jesus may You receive the honor that You're due

Oh Lord I bring an offering to You

I bring an offering to You

The sun cannot compare to the glory of Your love

There is no shadow in Your presence

No mortal man would dare to stand before Your throne

Before the Holy One of Heaven

It's only by Your blood it's only through Your mercy

Lord I come

I bring an offering of worship to my King

No one on earth deserves the praises that I sing

Jesus may You receive the honor that You're due

Oh Lord I bring an offering to You

I bring an offering of worship to my King

No one on earth deserves the praises that I sing

Jesus may You receive the honor that You're due

Oh Lord I bring an offering to You

Oh Lord I bring an offering to You

SHARING OF THE PEACE

L: The peace of the Lord be with you all.

C: And also with you.

RESPONSIVE INVOCATION

L: What a blessing it is to be able to gather freely in this place and to worship together.

ALL: May we never take for granted the freedom and faith we have in Christ Jesus.

L: Let’s praise the Lord for this gift of gathering, this joy in unity, and this peace we have in Jesus Christ, our Risen Lord.

ALL: Praise the Lord.

L: We begin in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

ALL: Amen.

TIME OF CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

L: Lord, when You created the heavens and the earth and everything in it, You called Your masterpiece good. But humanity-stained goodness with sinfulness.

ALL: We praise the Lord Jesus Christ who destroyed death and brought us eternal life.

L: Through His death and resurrection, Jesus Christ the Son of God paved the way for us to be set free.

ALL: For we have died with Christ and have also been resurrected into eternal life with Him.

L: Now knowing this truth, we must confess our sins to God.

ALL: We confess that although freed from sin, we fall short of the glory of God forgetting His path of righteousness and goodness. We ask for the forgiveness of our sins given only by the Son, Jesus Christ.

L: We confess and through Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Sin has no hold on us. Know your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

ALL: Amen.

READINGS FOR THE DAY - Deuteronomy 7:7-12, Ephesians 4:11-16 & Mark 4:30-34

Deuteronomy 7:7-12

7 The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. 8 But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. 10 But those who hate him he will repay to their face by destruction;

he will not be slow to repay to their face those who hate him. 11 Therefore, take care to follow the commands, decrees and laws I give you today. 12 If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the Lord your God will keep his covenant of love with you, as he swore to your ancestors.

Ephesians 4:11-16

11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

Mark 4:30-34

30 Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. 32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.” 33 With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. 34 He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

L: Awesome God, You are omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent and yet You know our very names. We praise and believe in You.

ALL: You are the Alpha, the Omega, the King of Kings, and the Lord of Lords, and yet You hear us and know us. We proclaim Your awesome majesty.

L: We believe in You, God. You are the Creator who is all light.

ALL: In You God, there is no darkness at all. No one is like You, infinite Father. No one at all.

L: We believe in You, Son of God, Jesus Christ, who is fully God and fully man.

ALL: Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, crucified on the cross, buried in a tomb, and fully resurrected to life on the third day.

L: Holy Spirit, we believe in You and Your dwelling within us. We acknowledge that You are all-knowing, immaculate, and the Deliverer of Good News to all who are lost.

ALL: We praise and proclaim the Trinity- Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

HYMN (Traditional) “O God, My Faithful God” LSB 696 (vs. 1-4)

SERMON TEXT – 2 Peter 1:1-11

1Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours: 2 Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. 3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. 5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins. 10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

THE LORD’S PRAYER

C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

BENEDICTION

SONG (Contemporary) “Who You Say I Am”

Who am I that the highest King would welcome me

I was lost but He brought me in.

Oh, His love for me.

Oh, His love for me.

Who the son sets free,

 oh is free indeed.

I’m a child of God, yes I am.

Free at last, He has ransomed me,

His grace runs deep.

While I was a slave to sin,

Jesus died for me.

Yes, He died for me.

Who the Son sets free,

Oh is free indeed.

I’m a child of God, yes I am.

In my Father’s house

There’s a place for me.

I’m a child of God,

Yes I am.

I am chosen, not forsaken

I am who You say I am.

You are for me, not against me.

I am who You say I am

(2X)

Who the Son sets free,

Oh is free indeed.

I’m a child of God, yes I am.

In my Father’s house

There’s a place for me.

I’m a child of God,

Yes I am.
