  • Matthew 6:19–21 The Message
Don’t hoard treasure down here where it gets eaten by moths and corroded by rust or—worse!—stolen by burglars. Stockpile treasure in heaven, where it’s safe from moth and rust and burglars. It’s obvious, isn’t it? The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being.

    Matthew 6:19–20 The Message
Don’t hoard treasure down here where it gets eaten by moths and corroded by rust or—worse!—stolen by burglars. Stockpile treasure in heaven, where it’s safe from moth and rust and burglars.
When I hear the word treasure, I think of pirates and sword fighting, and gold bullion, Argh!
It brings me back to my time as a kid, and those fanciful ideas that I might find a treasure map!
I think that it was Walt Disney’s Pinocchio that morally put treasure in it’s right perspective when it introduced that mystical place “Treasure Island” after mischievous boys spent enough time there they would turn into donkeys! The term the movie uses is Jackass, which is the proper term for a male donkey. Disney’s concept in the movie was tongue in cheek. He could have used donkey, but i think he was making a point.

    I. The Problems with Treasures.

    They are seductive.
There are treasures that lure us into deceptive living:
What kind of house I want.
What kind of car I drive.
    My ever changing wardrobe.
    The newest gaming system.
    Bigger and better entertainment consoles.
    More exotic vacations.
They are indigenous to specific kingdoms .
    Some are deceptive.
    They cohabit-ate with kingdoms.
That is, kingdoms of man and God’s.
Some only satisfy for a time.
The kingdoms where our passions reign.
This brings me to my second point...

    II. The Places we Treasure.

These are the kingdoms where our passions reign.!
    Earthly minded
    Paul says it best in...
    Romans 8:6 NKJV
For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
I don’t know, what do you think? Am I being to narrow minded here?
Is not a pre-occupation with earthly things the same as carnal mindedness?
    1 John 2:16 NKJV
For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.
It’s easy to be earthly minded, it’s where we live, play, work.
It’s also where Satan reigns, and the place he deceives us into depositing treasures!
But then, there is the ...
    Heavenly minded
I don’t think this is very popular in our church culture presently!
There are enough deceivers that you can go listen to, that will tell you everything you want to hear!
They will make you feel good about yourself.
They will pull out some scriptures from their bag of tricks that will seem to backup what they are saying.
They will tell you that God wants you to have everything you desire, and that is the result of “true faith”!
But you see, being heavenly minded is all about the kingdom God has provided for those who love Him.
The treasures we store up there, reflect the things we deem most important to us, and determine the quality of our fruit.
Which brings me to the last point...

    III. The Purpose for Treasures.

    A. Generally Speaking
To have something to show for being diligent and hard working.
"The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being.”
"The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being.”
    B. Spiritually Speaking
    To bless others
To have something to show for being diligent and hard working.
To bless others, and bring them to the only one who can give them new purpose.
Always being reminded that the great commandment of God, that Jesus says we are to keep, is to Love God with our whole being and our neighbor as ourselves.
To share the good news of God’s kingdom with the world.
