Philip D. W. Krey

Dr. Philip Krey loves to write and converse about the history of the interpretation of the Bible in the early and medieval church; he is a member and co-founder of the Society for the Study of the Bible in the Middle Ages. Dr. Krey has a special fascination for the history of the interpretation of the Book of Revelation. He has written and translated a medieval Franciscan’s Revelation Commentary – Nicholas of Lyra lived in the fourteenth century. With Lesley Smith of Oxford, he edited a book for Brill on Nicholas’s commentary on the whole Bible. Dr. Krey also has a long-standing interest in medieval theology and is the co-editor with Peter Casarella of a series recently initiated by Catholic University Press, “Sources of Medieval Christian Thought.” His interests in theology flow into the Reformation period, and he translated a volume called Luther’s Spirituality for Paulist Press’s Classics in Western Spirituality Series. Dr. Krey’s third interest evolves out of his long experience in urban ministry. Even though he teaches and is now in administration, he has never given up serving urban parishes. Having studied the medieval Franciscans, he is dedicated by God’s grace, to rebuilding and renovating urban churches.
