Loving God is more than just a feeling | Amar a Dios es más que un simple sentimiento
"Because you have made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the Most High, your habitation. There shall no evil befall you, neither shall any plague come near your dwelling" (Psalm 91:9-10)
In a previous study, we saw that "habitation" was a word referring to the place that you live, not someplace that is visited once in a while when you feel like it. "Habitation" is the place where your heart dwells and makes its home.
Today's verses: Psalm 91:14-16, John 14:15, I John 2:1-6, I John 4:19-20 & I John 4:7-8
Loving God is more than just a feeling
"Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he has known My name. (Psalm 91:14)
The word translated "love" here is a Hebrew word meaning "to be attached to, to delight in" and has a sense of "joining together." This kind of love is bound to the object of it. It is not just a "warm and fuzzy" feeling of affection that we have at times, like during a lovely praise song or at a moment when we realize the delight of the Lord's provision of something special in our lives; but, like "habitation" in Psalm 91:9, it is something more. It is our love being "attached" to the Lord, in Whom it delights. It is the steadfast setting of our heart love on the Greatest of the "things above", the Lord Himself.
Setting our love on God includes obedience
"If you love Me, keep My commandments." (John 14:15)
The word translated "love" here is the Greek word "agape". The self-sacrificing love that Jesus had for us and what God is. (I John 4:8) It is not just a feeling; but a self-sacrificing action toward others... including toward God. If we love Him, our actions will show it.
I John 2:1-6 goes even further as to what our actions reveal:
"My little children, these things write I unto you that you sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. And hereby do we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He that says, I know Him, and keeps not His commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keeps His word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in Him. He that says he abides in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked."
This passage is not saying that if we don't keep His commandments we are not saved; but, rather that our not keeping those commandments indicates that we really don't have a correct personal knowledge of what He and being a Christian is all about. We cannot properly even know Him, without obedience.
Setting our love upon God includes loving each other
I John 4:19-20
"If a man say, I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar: for he that loves not his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? And this commandment have we from Him, That he who loves God love his brother also."
I John 4:7-8
"Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loves is born of God, and knows God. He that loves not knows not God; for God is love."
As we go through this Covid-19 tribulation and time of testing, may we set our love on the Lord in both word and deed. And, may we also set our hearts on our brothers and sisters in Christ, near and far, who are suffering as well. "...if anyone loves God, this one is known by Him." (I Corinthians 8:3)

Los versos de hoy: Salmo 91:14-16, Juan 14:15, I Juan 2:1-6, I Juan 4:19-20 y I Juan 4:7-8
"Si me amas, guarda mis mandamientos". (Juan 14:15)
I Juan 4:19-20
I Juan 4:7-8
(I Corintios 8:3)
