We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. When times get difficult we have choices: we can withdraw and simply hide in fear; we can become angry and bitter; we can blame others, or we can grow! The text above chooses the later result.
It is a little like working with weights. The idea is to put your muscles under resistance so they strengthen and grow. It is not always fun to grow but the people in the best shape have discovered the importance of being disciplined in their exercise.
The hard times are difficult teachers but the difficult teachers are the ones you look back on with gratitude. These teachers pushed you beyond what you realized you could do. That's what trials will do if you approach them as a class rather than a punishment.
