So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it. (Hebrews 2:1).
We have a tendency (or habit) to pay half-attention (if that much) as we read the Bible (perhaps like you read the verse above.) The writer of Hebrews urges us to listen VERY carefully to the truth. To not listen carefully is to risk drifting away from that truth.
If we give half-hearted attention to God's Word, we will tend to hear only what we want to hear. We will miss the words that correct our misunderstandings or error. We will miss the words that equip us for service or for the trials that are ahead. If we are half-hearted in our reading and hearing of the Bible, we will inevitably be half-hearted in our relationship with God. (You are not fully committed to any relationship where you only listen half-heartedly.) It is easy to justify sin when you only glance at the Word of God.
Take time to read God's Word. Listen carefully when it is being taught (and if it is not being taught . . . go somewhere where it is being taught). Our spiritual growth and vitality depend on it.
