Daniel 3: A Greater Victory
Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the door of the burning fiery furnace; he declared, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out, and come here!” Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out from the fire. The hair of their heads was not singed, their cloaks were not harmed, and no smell of fire had come upon them. Nebuchadnezzar answered and said, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent his angel and delivered his servants, who trusted in him, and set aside the king's command, and yielded up their bodies rather than serve and worship any god except their own God. Therefore, I make a decree: Any people, nation, or language that speaks anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego shall be torn limb from limb, and their houses laid in ruins, for there is no other god who is able to rescue in this way.”
Thought for Today
What an amazing turn of events. God has once again come through for His people in a profound and memorable way. The king is awestruck by what has happened. Apparently, it is one thing for a god to be wise and interpret dreams, it is another for Him to physically manifest and save His subjects. Through the faithful witness and courage of the three Hebrew men the whole world will hear of the greatness of the power of Israel. Notice that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did nothing but stand up for God’s honor when they were dragged before the king. They did not seek this honor. They did not make a scene. They simply testified to the worthiness of God alone to be worshipped and had courage in the critical moment. What was the result? The king decreed that no one in the kingdom may ever abuse God’s honor in word or deed again at the cost of their lives. There is no way the Israelites could have won such a victory for God on their own. Only God, defending His own honor, could win such a resounding victory. This is our calling, too. We are to witness to God’s glory when called upon and stand with courage, so He can display His power. Our world has no shortage of opportunities to do this. You do not have to seek them out. Let God use you in the critical moment and marvel at how God defends His own honor through you.
Lord God, use me as You will. Help me to have courage and determination, to speak the truth in love and watch to see what You will do. Amen.
