And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
– Genesis 3:8
If Adam had never sinned then we would still know the sound of God’s walking. The presence of God with His people is one of the most important themes of Scripture. The ultimate goal of mankind is to once again dwell with God.
Revelation 22 says we “will see his face,” and this promise is taught time and again throughout the New Testament. Why is this such an important matter?
The work of Jesus on our behalf was to bring us to God. He is our High Priest. He brought us back into fellowship with God the Father and made it so that we would one day see His face. Even today Christ intercedes for us in the very throne room of God. The very same throne room we are to enter boldly because of the grace given to us in Christ.
Lots of songs and hymns have been written about this idea. We have many names in Scripture given to the same idea. The Promised Land. Sweet Beulah. Over the River Jordan. Who shall ascend the Mount of the Lord? There is a river whose flowing makes the hearts of the people glad – not because of the river but because of the source: God Himself. We will be glad because we will once again know the sound of God dwelling with His people.
