“Trust in and rely confidently on the LORD with all your heart and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. Proverbs 3:5 AMP
We hear that trust can only be gained and not given. When we hear the words “just trust me,” immediately it causes us to recount the actions and attitudes of the person asking to be trusted. We do that because a person’s track record is a predictor of future performance. So, what then can we say about the creator of the universe asking us to trust Him?
The word trust here in the Hebrew carries with it several nuances. Loosely translated, it means “to be confident of,” “unsuspecting,” “to cause to be relied upon,” “to inspire to action,” and one which I particularly love, “proven to be firm, reliable, permanent.” WOW! If only we could believe that to be absolutely true about God. So, how do we determine if God is all of these things? Simple, read His Word!
The Bible is a story, His-story! It faithfully has recorded the intentions, attitudes, and actions of the one who is asking for our trust. The record of God’s character is flawless and worthy of our trust! He has never failed, lied, or reneged on anything He said even though those to whom He covenanted were continually unfaithful. If that isn’t enough, look to the cross of Jesus Christ! See the nail pieced hands and feet suffering for your sin! But how to enter into this kind of trusting relationship? Again, the answer is simple…
“But prove yourselves doers of the word [actively and continually obeying God’s precepts], and not merely listeners [who hear the word but fail to internalize its meaning], deluding yourselves [by unsound reasoning contrary to the truth].” James 1:22 AMP
The word trust is a verb which means that there needs to be an action performed. Many Christians today fail to enact the Word that they hear and then blame God for His lack of faithfulness to respond! Look at verse 1 of Proverbs 3,
“My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments;”
Proverbs 3:1 AMP
It is a heart issue! Following God cannot be done be good intentions, it must be an all-out purposeful activity. That is why the Scripture warns us about having a divided heart.
“Then Elijah stood in front of them and said, “How much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him! But if Baal is God, then follow him!” But the people were completely silent.” 1 Kings 18:21 NLT
“If any of you lacks wisdom [to guide him through a decision or circumstance], he is to ask of [our benevolent] God, who gives to everyone generously and without rebuke or blame, and it will be given to him. 6But he must ask [for wisdom] in faith, without doubting [God’s willingness to help], for the one who doubts is like a billowing surge of the sea that is blown about and tossed by the wind. 7For such a person ought not to think or expect that he will receive anything [at all] from the Lord, 8being a double-minded man, unstable and restless in all his ways [in everything he thinks, feels, or decides].” James 1:5-8 AMP
Clearly the Word of God warns us about the devastating results of having a divided heart. When an issue or goal settles into our heart, it produces activity and action directed to the completion of the task. That is the determination God wants from us so that we may reap the full benefits of His Word.
I encourage you today to check the condition of your heart for from it will flow all the action, activity, and purposes of your life! Focus on Him and determine today not to have a divvied heart for He is the Faithful One!
