- Being honest must start with ourselves. The Holy Spirit provides the light of truth to enlighten the dust or dirt within us, that can fester into something worse if not purged ASAP. He gracefully comes to sis us in the needed cleanup! Thank You Abba!
- God is always the hero, one way or another. He's very good at saving!
David's Folly: Coverup
2 Samuel 11:12-13
Then David said to him, “Stay here one more day, and tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next. At David’s invitation, he ate and drank with him, and David made him drunk. But in the evening Uriah went out to sleep on his mat among his master’s servants; he did not go home.
Thought for Today
Sin often puts us on a slippery slope that leads us deeper into sin. David had taken advantage of his soldier, Uriah’s, wife. When she discovers she is pregnant David goes through all kinds of schemes to try to cover up his sin. It ends with David ordering the death of Uriah in the battle. While this seems very out of character for the great king David, we see the reality of his humanness on full display. We have all found ourselves in situations where we tried to cover up one mistake with a second lie, and then a third, believing that eventually we can get away with the first sin. In the end, we find ourselves in a much deeper hole than if we had just owned up to the bad choice in the first place. God’s grace is seen two-fold here. First, God uses Uriah’s integrity to make sure that David does not get away with his sin. Secondly, he provides time for David to come to his senses and repent. If you find yourself in a bad situation of your own making, but it hasn’t been fully discovered yet, don’t be like David and try to cover it up further. Rather, confess your sin and you will discover that not only is God incredibly forgiving, so are your family and friends. Honesty is the only way to see things turn out right in the end.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I confess to You that __________________________. Give me the courage to tell the person who needs to know the truth and grant them to grace to deal with me kindly. Amen.
