“And now, Israel, listen carefully to these decrees and regulations that I am about to teach you. Obey them so that you may live, so you may enter and occupy the land that the LORD, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. Do not add to or subtract from these commands I am giving you. Just obey the commands of the LORD your God that I am giving you.” (Deuteronomy 4:1-2)
People naturally resist commands. This is part of our sinful and rebellious nature. Consequently, people feel free to ignore commands of God they don't like. (Isn't it amazing how selectively we obey the Lord?)
We have misunderstood the purpose of God's commands. They are not there to enslave us, they are there to set us free to live the life He created us to live. Obedience is not about control, it is about freedom. God's commands provide a path that will lead us through the trials and difficulties of life.
Think of God's commands like you do GPS instructions. At times, they may not seem to make sense, but if you follow those commands (a GPS is not flawless, but God is) you will reach the destination: life abundant and full.
