Sexual Abuse & the SBC
On Wednesday Night, June 8th, we will have an update on "Sexual Abuse and the SBC." Back on February 10, 2019, we had a Wednesday Night Study that resulted from a 3 part series in the Houston Chronicle called "Abuse of Faith" documenting how over the last 20 years there have been around 380 Southern Baptist Church leaders and volunteers who have been accused of sexual misconduct against more than 700 victims. The offenders include Pastors, Youth Ministers, Music Ministers, Sunday School Teachers, Deacons, and Church Volunteers. From those accusations, there are around 220 offenders who have been convicted, took plea deals, or whose cases were still pending. The newspaper claimed that other offending ministry leaders are still serving in SBC churches today.
Beyond the offenses at these churches, the victims blame several past presidents and prominent leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention for ignoring or downplaying these incidents of abuse.
Last year at the annual meeting of the SBC in Nashville, the majority of messengers from the churches voted to create a Sex Abuse Task Force appointed by the SBC President, Ed Litton, to oversee the work of an independent investigation company called Guidepost Solutions. On Sunday, May 22, 2022, after a seven month investigation, Guidepost released a 288 page report with various recommendations which will be reviewed at the 2022 Annual Meeting of the SBC in Anaheim, CA on June 12-15.
Our Wednesday Night "Question of the Week" will be: How will the recommendations of the Sex Abuse Task Force affect the ministries of Northlake Baptist Church?
