On Wednesday Night, July 13th, at 6:30pm, we will try to answer some questions from our e-mail box about Reformed Theology and its influence in the Southern Baptist Convention. In many ways, Reformed Theology and the Theology of most Southern Baptists are very similar because the Southern Baptist Convention of Churches was born out of the Protestant Reformation of the 16th Century. The Reformation of the 16th Century was a protest against many abuses within the Roman Catholic Church. When a revival of faith within the Roman Catholic church did not seem possible, there was a protest against the church from which we have Protestant Denominations. Several of these Protestant groups adopted the 5 Sola’s as their Statement of Faith: (Sola is the Latin word for “alone.”) We believe in Scripture Alone as the authoritative Word of God. And we believe we are saved by Grace Alone, through Faith Alone, in Christ Alone and to God Alone be the Glory.
The Protestant Reformed groups believed that these “solas” would correct many of the errors within the Roman Catholic Church. If you study the theology and history of these “solas”, you will see that there are many points where the Reformed Denominations and Baptist Denominations are in agreement. But there are a few points where there is some disagreement.
Our Wednesday Night Question of the Week is:
What are the differences between Southern Baptist and Reformed theology?
As I understand, S Baptist core doctrine is salvation by faith through grace, available to everyone. Reformed believe that only the elect, or chosen, receive salvation. Reformed actively practice Matthew 18, including excommunication.
