These are interesting days in which we live. There is a sense of doom and gloom and everything we hear seems to point out that dark days lie ahead of us. I know I have spoken about this before, but I am just bewildered to the point that I don’t know what to believe anymore. We have heard the term fake news so much I’m not sure what is fake and what is real.
In my devotions, I’m in Luke chapter two. This is one of those chapters that bring the warm and fuzzies to my heart. How can it not? It is the account of our Lord Jesus being born. In Luke chapter two there is just an amazing feeling of hope, joy, and peace. Verse 10 caught my attention as I was reading. “But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people;” As I read this, I tried to put myself into the shoes of people in that day. Your nation would be conquered by very cruel people and there have been several times people tried to raise up and take the nation back but failed. There was probably not a whole lot of good news going on. Then, suddenly, out of the darkness, this angel dispels the darkness of night with his bright and glorious light, and he has good news. The Savior has finally come. This has been promised for hundreds if not thousands of years. Was this fake news? Could this really be true? The angel gives three powerful statements, 1) Do not be afraid 2) His purpose was to bring good news 3) This good news was for all the people.
Now as I have read and reread this hundreds of times in my life the assignment that was given to the angel that amazing night has become our assignment. Do you realize that we are living in days where very few people live with any hope? Millions live in fear about what tomorrow may bring. I realize bad news sells, but we are followers of the King of hope and the news we must share is not simply good news, but it is amazing news.
I like the song “Go Tell it on the Mountain.” Sadly, it seems this is only emphasized around Christmas time. I’ll let you in on a secret. The call to go and tell is a daily charge given to us by Jesus. People are afraid and darkness seems to be winning, but we have the Light that can dispel all darkness, which can bring hope to the hopeless. This my friends is not fake news, this is the “Good News.” But for us to share the good news, we need to be reminded that there is good news. Please do not let these dark days lock you up. Be bold and be brave. People may not realize they need Jesus, but we know they do. Let’s go get em.
