Last week we looked at the qualities and effects of the word of God and its ability cut us wide open and lay us bare before God. This Sunday we conclude the chapter by examining Hebrews 4:14-16. These verses are among some of the most well-known verses in the whole letter and they are packed with rich treasure and great comfort. Consider preparing your heart by reading straight through Hebrews chapters 1–4 as a reminder of the flow thus far. Pray for us and we will be praying for you and looking forward to seeing you Sunday!
Men’s Group: Wrapping up Galatians
On Tuesday, the men gathered to study the closing section of Galatians 6 and discussed the only boast of every godly man and every Christian for that matter; the cross of Christ. We also talked about the danger of misplaced confidence in the flesh or anything else other than that. We invite you to jump in with us in two weeks for the next one!
Women’s Group:Colossians
Also on Tuesday, the women continued their study through Colossians 4:2-6 and considered the importance of persistence and steadfastness in prayer. It can be tempting to give up hoping and praying for lost loved ones if we’re not seeing anything change. However, we are not called to change anyone’s heart. What we are called to do is to "season our speech with salt” and to pray because it is God alone who is mighty to save.
Mid-week Study:Baptism pt. 2
On Wednesday at our mid-week study we covered Question 45 of the New City Catechism which was sort of a part 2 to the previous question which defined baptism. This week the question was “Is baptism with water the washing away of sin itself?”. This is a crucial question because it is very easy and dangerous to confuse the thing (baptism with water) with the thing signified (being cleansed by the blood of Christ and the renewal of the Holy Spirit). Respectable theologians and scholars have disagreed over the centuries about some of the specifics and logistics of baptism but ultimately, baptism is a sign of God’s work, not ours. A minister may give the sign but only God can give the thing signified. So when you are discouraged and lack assurance, Christian, remember your baptism! And let it preach to you the promises of God in Christ for you and to you.
Thanksgiving Meal:Coming Up!
Mark your calendars because our annual Thanksgiving Potluck meal will be Sunday November 20th @ 5:30pm at the Art Center (the same place we have service). All of the Turkey will be provided so we invite you to bring a side, dessert, drinks or something to share. We are in need of some more tables so let us know if that’s something you might be able to help us with. We will be posting a link to the digital sign up and there will also be a physical sign up sheet available this Sunday as well.
