- Intro:Every week, this congregation has someone up here at the mic inviting you all in. Every week, I go out into the world and invite people in, tell them, Come and See! I have probably given out 10000 invitation to come and see. And just about every week I invite people to come and see what prayer can do, what surrender can do. Jesus opened up the invitation in John 1:39
John 1:39 NASB95 He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.PrayWhy are we so afraid to come? You have seen the signs, by seeing others and others have proclaimed the truth, but did you miss the blessing? It is the same with invitation to come and be a part of the family or the invitation we give at the end, so many people miss the blessing because they ignore the sign, ignore the calling and ignore the great things that come from coming and seeing what Jesus is doing. You know out of 10K invitations I have given probably only 1% have answered the call. I guess it is true what Jesus says, narrow is the gate that leads to salvation and few will enter it. Well today, the Word of God is going to call to see who will say yes; begining in John 1:29A SignJohn 1:29–30 NIV The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’A. Now John Transitions1. From John the baptist to Jesusa. From the proclaimer to the redeemeri. Another natural theological progressionii. Away from man and move to GodPsalm 145:3 NASB95 Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised, And His greatness is unsearchable.b. He takes away the sin of the Worldi. Important working hereii. Jesus has taken away the sin of the world, will we accept that forgiveness is the keyiii. Again speaking to the Jew and Gentile, speaking to us today2. Behold - Here is the one I am not fit to tie the sandalsa. The one you asked aboutB. You want answers, here he isJohn 1:31–34 (NIV)I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.” Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”1. John in Humilitya. God does not need me to reveal Himb. But in splendor He revealed Himself to all including meLuke 3:22 NASB95 and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”c. John the Baptist was the sign before the proclamation2. What does the answer do for you, harden your heart or softenJohn 1:34 NIV I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”a. Difference between John and the Pharisee, between Saul and Davidi. He was willing to give it all upb. This was big news that was of great joyi. The Savior had comec. This is the Son of Godi. There is power in thisii. Authority in this - the one who forgives the sin of the Worldd. Now either it is true or John is guilty of blasphemyi. Understand the danger of proclaiming thisii. Meant death to invoke the name of the Savior falselyCalling of the ApostlesJohn 1:35–37 NIV The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.A. John’s message fulfilled1. Disciples follow Jesusa. As it was meant to beb. They leave John and cling to Jesus2. John disappears from the stage until a little latera. Now all becomes about JesusCan I become less?b. He testified to the light and now the light has comei. John was willing to get out of the wayii. They need Christ, not johnDo I get out of the way of Jesus?John 3:30 NIV He must become greater; I must become less.”c. Another fulfillment of ScriptureB. What are apostlesJohn 1:40–47 NIV Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter). The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.” Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip. When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”1. First notice that they are called disciples herea. Wont become apostles until laterb. Their mission was to learn here, that’s what disciple meansi. Greek = Mathetesii. Student but with a closer meaning in relationship than we attributeiii. More like an apprenticeship - live together and absorb everything2. Two types of apostlesa. Apostolos - One sent with a message and with orders(with authority)b. The big “A” apostlec. The little “a” apostle found in EphesiansEphesians 4:11 NIV So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers,C. Have it highlight the ones spoken of in John 1.D. Jesus Reveals Himselfa. Peterb. Philipi. Knew Peter and Andrewc. NathanielWhat do you Seek?John 1:38–39 NIV Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?” “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.A. A calling of the heart1. Rabbia. Reveals their intent, to learnb. Word is used sparingly in the Gospelc. They understood Him to be great, to have authorityi. What we would called ordainedii. They recognized He was sent by God2. Where are you stayingProverbs 11:27 NASB95 He who diligently seeks good seeks favor, But he who seeks evil, evil will come to him.a. We want to be where you areb. We want to know what you knowB. Jesus Invites them in1. Comea. See this a bunch in revelationb. It is a command as much as an invitation2. And You Will Seea. You’re not only gonna need belief but faithJames 1:25 NASB95 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.b. You are going to have to leave where you are to come to where I amc. There is going to be a transformationi. But it will be up to you to comeC. Greater things for those who believeJohn 1:50–51 NIV Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.”1. God intends for us to see great thingsa. The kingdom is full of themb. Are we paying attention2. Do we believe because He saysa. Whatever you are going through right now do you believeb. Nathaniel believedi. Because what Jesus said was trueii. What Jesus says is still trueConclusion: John 1:39NIV2011
