My Favorite Illustrations Christians Are to Be Different

William Barclay said: “Men need to discover the lost radiance of the Christian faith. In a worried world, the Christian should be the only man who remains serene. In a depressed world, the Christian should be the only man who remains full of the joy of life.”

And there those of that look at life and see the glass half full and and others see it as half empty…
We live in a world that is pretty angry… there are so many things that we can look at and complain about..

Somebody has well said that there are only two kinds of people in the world—there are those who wake up in the morning and say, “Good morning, Lord,” and there are those who wake up in the morning and say, “Good Lord, it’s morning.

In his book The Total Man, Dan Benson tells of experts who studied tape-recorded conversations from different homes over a period of time. They found ten negative comments for every one positive one. It is easy to have a pessimistic view of our world..
If someone recorded our conversations for a week, what would we find? Would our words Express the Fruit of JOY?
We are in our sermon series 9 Fruits 1 Flavor.. WE are are looking at the Fruit of the Spirit listed in
Do our lives REFLECT the Fruit of JOY?
Our attitude towards life is really the front page of lives.. It’s our worldview --- it is the way we experience and process life… For a Christian attitudes should be influenced by the Holy spirit …
Jesus said that we would be known as his disciples by our fruit…
WE are are looking at the Fruit of the Spirit listed in
Our attitudes often reflect the things that we are Pursing with our lives...
    — when you think about the First three Fruit listed… love, Joy and peace…
are qualities represent desires and needs that lie deep in the human heart..
In We have three Fruit - that really are closely connected to each other … love, Joy and peace…
these are qualities are a Triad that represent desires and needs that lie deep in the human heart..
    1. We all have the need to experience love.... that is to be loved and to express love.
None of us really wants to be alone in life… we long for the love of family and friends...
You may remember learning about Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs .. The bottom of the Pyramid… Physical needs.. food and water… (our greatest need) then next its our Safety needs.... that is security and shelter… the next on the list is…the sense of Belonging and love needs.. friendship and intimacy
None of us really wants to be alone in life… we long for the love of family and friendships. Relationships are basic human need.
Our need for love is in the top three basic human needs... The truth is that None of us really wants to be alone in life… we long for the love of family and friendships. Relationships are basic human need.
    2. We all desire happiness... we want to live a life that is characterized by joy …. We don’t simply want to exist in life… but to experience happiness.... I haven’t met anyone yet that wants to live a miserable life.. We have a need for joy in human heart..
    3. We all desire peace — Peace is this state of Shalom or contentment.. it living a life free of anxiety and worries.. We all desrire will even fight for peace...
and live a life free of anxiety and worries.. We will even fight for peace...
Here is the thing not only do we desire these things… we PUSUIT these things for ourselves and for our families… How many want our children to have a better future that we had? . What we are saying is that we want we want our children to experience more love, Peace/security, more happiness..
We want our children to experience love, Peace/security, happiness..
Why do we have this need to strive for these things??
The reason is because we know that these these qualities are not guaranteed.. …love can be illusive… love can disappoint us … we can loose our peace… finances can be lost … . natural disaster can strike… sickness can come… So ...Joy is not guarantied… so we strive after love, Joy, Peace...
The pursuit of Happiness is really not something that is new..it has pretty much always been the chief motivator of man...
The pursuit of Happiness has pretty much always been the chief motivator of man...
it looks more like this graph.. a series of turns. and ... with ups and downs..
    kj
but it is more like series of turns.... with ups and downs..
We know all the above… but the pursuit of Happiness has pretty much always been the chief motivator of man...
This pursuit of Happiness is probably our biggest motivator in life..
The reason we pursuit these things are not guaranteed in life… Not everyone is Going experience love.…love can be illusive… love can disappoint us … same thing with peace… So many things can disturb peace… finances.... or natural disaster… loose peace…
and the pursuit of Happiness can be one of the biggest motivators..
Joy is not always guarantied … and the pursuit of Happiness can be one of the biggest motivators..
The philosopher Aristotle called happiness the summum bonum—. “The Greatest Good” or “the ultimate goal of people's lives. According to Aristotle - Happiness is why we do what we do, we seek what we seek and love what we love, because we believe these things will make us happy.
Aristotle argued Happiness is why we do what we do, we seek what we seek and love what we love, because we believe these things will make us happy.
Blaise Pascal 17 century philosopher in his work Pensées said something similar.
All men seek happiness. This is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end.”
    who hang themselves. Pascal..
Happiness is Written into our Declaration… of Independence---
The American dream is tied to Thomas Jefferson and the declaration of Independence.. “we have the rights to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Thomas Jefferson wrote that “we have the rights to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
In America it is our God given right to pursuit happiness…
    W
We have the Freedom and the right to pursuit happiness… You can see how easily Happiness can become the Goal of life.
The philosopher Aristotle called happiness the summum bonumthe greatest good. “The Greatest Good” is view that happiness is the ultimate goal of people's lives.
… We often define happiness in achievements, finances, health, relationships, positions… One of the hard facts of life… is that we know that ultimately these things are not ends in themselves.. If that were true we Americans would be the happiest people in the world… simply not true....
… We often define happiness in achievements, finances, health, relationships, positions… One of the hard facts of life… is that we know that ultimately these things are not ends in themselves.. If they were we Americans would be the happiest people in the world...
The problem not the pursuit of joy but really the way that we define Joy… We define Joy as Happiness.
There are people in Third world countries that have very little rights, resources and means but still --- have less heart ache, stress, more joy...
“The Greatest Good” is view that happiness is the ultimate goal of people's lives.
Happiness is dependent on Happenings ...by our achievements, our finances, our health, our relationships, our position and status… We only Celebrate life when we winning....
One of the hard facts of life… is that we know that ultimately these things are not ends in themselves.. Like the man who climbed to the top of the ladder… and he looked across and realized that he was leaning against the wrong wall..
Aristotle argued that is why we do what we do, we seek what we seek and love what we love, because we believe these things will make us happy.
One of the Expression of being a follower of Christ is the Fruit of Joy…
This morning we are going to ask the question of Joy
The flip side of this is that if we don’t have all the above… we feel like failures…
It’s like the cartoon character, Charlie Brown, who was sitting on the curb one day with Linus. “I’ve decided to adopt a new philosophy in life.” “What’s that?” asked Linus. “From now on, I’m going to just dread one day at a time.”
like the cartoon character, Charlie Brown, who was sitting on the curb one day with Linus. “I’ve decided to adopt a new philosophy in life.” “What’s that?” asked Linus. “From now on, I’m going to just dread one day at a time.”
The problem when we define joy as Happiness/achievements… … we either become smug and self-reliant.. or we feel totally defeated… Neither of these views reflect the kind of Joy that God intended.
Blaise Pascal 17 century philospher in his work Pensées said something similar. All men seek happiness. This is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end.
The Joy presented in Scripture is very different to the Kind of joy we tend to chase after …
A Biblical view of joy is really wholistic word… can be found in Jesus Sermon on the mount in the Beatitudes… The world is Blessed… It communicates this idea of Spiritual peace, comfort, stability and blessing…. Jesus says blessed are the poor in Spirit.. theirs is the kingdom of heaven.. blessed are those who mourn they will be comforted.. blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth…
Biblical joy is a different pursuit…
The psalmist David gives us a different pursuit… David tells us that Path of life leads us to a different destination — not to a set goal and achievements, but the path of life leads us into the presence of God...
This is the heart of the New Testament concept of joy: a person joy even when he is mourning, suffering, or undergoing difficult circumstances
Biblical Joy is not tied to an emotion but rather to the person of Joy who is God himself...The bible tells that in His presence there is fulness of Joy....
David in tells us that for those who love God it’s a different journey…When pursuit joy… it leads us into the very presence of God..
Biblical Joy is not tied to an emotion but rather to source of Joy who is God himself...The bible tells that in His presence there is fulness of Joy.... Psalms gives us a different pursuit… The psalmist tells us that Path of live leads us to the presence of God...
    David says.
Path of life leads us to a different destination — not to a set goal and achievements, but the path of life leads us into the presence of God...
The reason being is that Joy is not tied to an emotion but to who intrinsically who God is …The bible tells that in His presence there is fulness of Joy....
    Psalm 16:11 ESV
11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
    Psalm 16:11 ESV
11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
The cause of some going to war, and of others avoiding it, is the same desire in both, attended with different views. The will never takes the least step but to this object. This is the motive of every action of every man, even of those who hang themselves. Pascal..
The Expositor’s Bible Commentary, Volume 5: Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs IV. The Experience of Faith (16:9–11)

The path of life” signifies the way that leads to life. It is a wisdom term for the fullness of life that only the wise could achieve

Joy is God’s gift to us..
David is a worshiper… He understood that In the presence of God there is Fulness of Joy ---- True Joy is going to Found in The presence of God.
The Expositor’s Bible Commentary, Volume 5: Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs IV. The Experience of Faith (16:9–11)

God’s blessing attends the life lived in the presence of God. The psalmist conceives of life in fellowship with God both in this world and beyond

Joy comes from the Greek word for joy is chara (gift). This kind of joy is the result of us letting God be at work in our lives. And every time we see chara in scripture, it’s because God initiated it..

There are 9 Fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatans
but the path doesn’t end there…
It is by spending time in worship and in Gods’ word … That is where real joy is going to be found… We are going to find His Joy…
We are told leads into joy that never ends… pleasures forever more..
It is the Joy that comes with Christ and his Kingdom… Jesus was clear that his Kingdom was not of this earth… Christ Kingdom is about Righteousness and peace and Joy in the Holy Spirit…His kind is here and it also a coming kingdom.. it there… The psalmists tells us keep walking on this path… because this is the path that leads into everlasting joy.… pleasures forever more..
Everlasting Joy.... comes from being in Christ — and having his Spirit comes to live in us… This is expressed in when we Abide in Christ the True Vine…
This is the Fruit of the spirit that Paul tells us about in — Joy come from Abiding ---
We have to remind ourselves of the context of the Fruit of the Spirit.. Fruit is the result of Freedom… Fruit is organic in nature… and so we can’t manufacture Love… Joy… We can’t make ourselves or others more loving, more joyful, for at peace.
    Galatians 5:22 ESV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

or a Christian Joy is a Fruit of the spirit.. .. Joy is one of God’s Characterists that is formed in our lives…through abiding..

Fruit is the Outcome of a Relationship… of being in Christ and living through Christ..… This means speaks of our regeneration…continuation … Regeneration in Salvation when a person has been Born Again -- in to New life… .and Continuation is walking in the freedom that Christ has called us too...
there person has been Born Again -- in to New life....and out of the New life is walking daily in step with the HS.
    Galatians 5:1 ESV
1 For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
Paul tells the that we have been called to Freedom.... with freedom comes the responsibility to chose freedom over Slavery … We can either be controlled by the passion and desires of the Flesh… Or we can identify with the freedom that we Jesus won on the cross....Sin, Death and the Grave were all defeated through the Death burial and resurrection of Jesus…
. we don’t have walk under yokes of bondage… … and put to death the works of the flesh by keeping in step with spirit
We are to identify with the crucified life… and put to death the works of the flesh by keeping in step with spirit
Paul tell us don’t give opportunity for the flesh but rather through love… serve one another.... How do that through the Holy Spirit.. Jesus told his disciples a number of times that spiritual Fruit is proof of true discipleship… John tells us that Abiding in Christ is the Secret to Joy...
    John 15:11 ESV
11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
The Outcomes of Abiding in His Joy and that it is Christ’s joy would be experienced from within.... this leads to compete or fulness of joy.. maximized Joy..
    and joy...
Jesus love is from another world.. unconditional love… So the same thing when it comes to Joy… It joy that represents Kingdom Joy……
Jesus makes the distinguistion between happiness and joy...
    Romans 14:17 ESV
17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
    Rom 114:
Jesus spoke these things so that their Joy may be Full..There are different levels of Joy…

We have Safeway these fuel perks that we collect and when we have accumulated enough points we cash in on our discount… We can save up 20 - 30 cents a gallon…which significant savings, right… But there is an art to using your fuel perks… You never want to arrive at pump with gas in the tank…in fact the less fuel you have in the tank the better…… the best case senerio .. that you roll into the gas station on fumes.... Because you want to max out on the savings...
But there is an art to using your fuel perks… You never want to arrive at pump with gas in the tank… the less fuel you have the better… in fact… the best case senerio .. that you roll into the gas station on empty...
When it comes to experiencing Joy… we want come in… empty of ourselves… Jesus fill us up with your joy....
you want to below empty… you want be rolling in on empty… Maximize those perks....
The word full here is the Greek word pleroo.. Mean to be filled up to the max… until there is no more room in the tank… Fulness of Joy is to be maxed up on Jesus..

Joy ought to be an essential characteristic of the Christian! A joyless Christian appears to be a contradiction to the truth of redemption. Consider the words

There is a new Freedom from the past and new freedom to serve God in the future… … Paul tells the Galatians they have been called to Freedom.... with freedom comes the ability to chose… rather than be controlled by the passion and desires of the Flesh…
Just like loving others unconditional love is not by chance… but by choice…
Aristotle argued that is why we do what we do, we seek what we seek and love what we love, because we believe these things will make us happy.
Take a second to think about that… That means that we can decide where or not allow joy to manisfest in our lives...
Blaise Pascal 17 century philospher in his work Pensées said something similar. All men seek happiness. This is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end.
We can choose to be victims and see the glass half empty, mope around, and let that nastiness be directed at everyone we know… But it was not what God intended for us to be.

Our text this morning is going to be — the postscript tells us it was a Psalm of Ascent. The Ascent Psalms were songs Israelite pilgrims sang as they went to worship at the Temple in Jerusalem during their festivals. These were well known memorized Hymns.. that gave people hope and comfort in different circumstances of life…
These songs helped the pilgrims to think about the heights and depths of life and God’s concern and faithfulness.
NT Wright tells us that the average
reminded the pilgrims of the Joy Israel felt when they return to the land of Canaan after being carried off into Captivity by the Babylonians…

The song is one of restoration of fortunes...
The reason there is so much joy in this song is that there is this restoration of fortunes...
One of the literary techniques of effective poetry are these sharp contrasts.... We see this in this psalm… Where we begin with Delerelious joy of freedom from captivity… the second half psalm jumps into the present tense when the psalm was written… It was during the hard times when

The fortunes speak of the way of life...
    Psalm 126:1–6 ESV
1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. 2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.” 3 The Lord has done great things for us; we are glad. 4 Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like streams in the Negeb! 5 Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! 6 He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.

    Song of Joy
But it begins with blessing longed for, a harvest yet to come, and ends with blessing enjoyed
T/s How do we Pursue kingdom Joy over illusive happiness?

    1. Connect to Our Expression of Joy.

How many of us like airports.... After our last trip… I am kind of liking them less.. but in the pst...
Airports bring out this range of emotions for me… There are those times where we have sadness because we have just dropped off a loved one and know we wont see them for extended time.. The they have been places of extreme… joy… Remember a few years ago going to San Franscico and picking up my parents and brothers and his family…..
Airports conger up a wide range of emotions for me… There are those times where we have sadness because we have just dropped off a loved one and know we wont see them for extended time.. The emotion is extreme… joy… Remember a few years ago going to San Franscico and picking up my parents and brothers and his family… We could see them walking towards us on this TV screen.. as they came through customs...There is something that brings extreme joy when we are reunited with our Family..
In this psalm we learn about the nature, intensity and expression of Joy. The reason for their joy is because those who were carried off from their homes and land by the Babylonians have now returned to Israel.
Can you imagine the emotions of those who were returning to their Homes.. after 70 years of captivity in Babylon… Many of them would have been children… maybe remembered being pulled from their families and homes…but now they were back in the land…
    Psalm 126:1–2 ESV
1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. 2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.”

    Psalms 126:11-2
If we are going to Pursue kingdom Joy over illusive happiness
    a. We have to Recognize that God is the One who restore fortunes…
The psalmist reminds us that it is the the Lord had Restored their Fortunes....
Fortunes refer to their way of life.. or the way that life was intended to be… . God’s intention for His people has always been to live in freedom..
That’s what Paul talks about in … It is for Freedom that Christ has set us free… don’t return back the yoke of Slavery...
    We
We are Called to Freedom… the way life ought to be...
Living in any kind of oppression or captivity is not normal…
Being in Captivity is really not the way that we were designed to live....It is unnatural… It is unnatural to be always burdened by the pressures of life…
God’s design for people is fulness of life or as tells us that we are to have Abundant life… or Maximum life.. with maximum joy...
    John 10:10 ESV
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
    John 101:10
The reason why Christians should be happiest people in the world— is because God in Salvation has restored our fortunes.
They have been freed from foreign oppression and a dominion where they were slaves under cruel taskmasters. It is this thought that causes joy to fill their hearts.
The reason Israel has so much Joy.. is because they have been freed from foreign oppression and a dominion where they were slaves under cruel taskmasters. It is this thought that causes joy to fill their hearts.
As they stood back on their land --- They felt like a dream had come true…
The people knew about the promises of restoration; but when the actual moment of restoration came, it was an overwhelming experience. They were like those “who dreamed.”
When they stood back in the land they felt like they were dreaming… the prophecies had been fulfilled..
The return of the captives to Land had been prophesied by Isaiah, Jeremiah… and Amos..
The people knew about the promises of restoration; but when the actual moment of restoration came, it was an overwhelming experience. They were like those “who dreamed.”
It was if they had woken up from a dream and standing in a daze… and overwhelmed by their new reality..
Their new reality marked a sharp reversal of their former distress.
There is nothing superficial or half-hearted in their appreciation of what God has achieved for them. The psalm says their ‘mouths were filled with laughter’. The sense conveyed in this is that they were overwhelmed with such a deep sense of joy that it overflowed in laughter.
God filled the desires of their hearts.. and the response was one of laughter and songs…
The people were exuberant with “laughter” and songs rang out .... their were shouts of joy.... Often think of Africa as place of hardships and distress… but let me to you something about the Christian there… Is that they know how to sing with heart..’
There is song we used to Sing Called Jubulani… It starts off Jesus river of life to our thirsty-land … Savior reaching out with your mighty hand… oh yeh.. sing for joy oh Africa --- the Lord God has risen upon you now....
Praise and worship was part of the Education of Israel…This is how they told the next generation the Story of Yahweh (God of Israel) .. in salvation history… His mighty ACTS of Salvation… in the past built the faith of the future generations…
    mighty ACTS of Salvation...
Our worship ought to be Celebration… there ought to be Joy… and rejoicing....
There is nothing superficial or half-hearted in their appreciation of what God has achieved for them. The psalm says their ‘mouths were filled with laughter’. The sense conveyed in this is that they were overwhelmed with such a deep sense of joy that it overflowed in laughter.
It is the expression of the health of a tree. If tree is sick it is not going to bare good fruit — but if the fruit tree is healthy then the fruit is going to produce good fruit.. One of the reason Jesus cursed the fig tree.. is that it had leaves which promised figs.. but it had no fruit or productivity… Promise without fruit… The gospel is also the Joy News… So, we need to be careful that we don’t carry promise of fruit without the evidence of fruit.. If we we are going to produce fruit what does it look like?
There three things connected to Joy —
    Psalm 126:1–2 ESV
1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. 2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.”
There three things connected to rejoicing:
    1. Laughter ---
God filled the desires of their hearts.. and the response was one of laughter and songs…
The people were exuberant with “laughter” and songs rang out .... their were shouts of joy.... Often think of Africa as place of hardships and distress… but let me to you something about the Christian there… Is that they know how to sing with heart..’
We don’t equate Laughter with Worship… If someone started laughing during worship… it would be a little strange…
Fruit of the Spirit the result or outcome of a life that has been regenerated… Born Again -- in to New life.... The Fruit of the Spirit is the Evidence the proof that we are true disciples of Jesus…
There is song we used to Sing Called Jubulani… It starts off Jesus river of life to our thirsty-land … Savior reaching out with your mighty hand… oh yeh.. sing for joy oh Africa --- the Lord God has risen upon you now....
They were overwhelmed with Joy, their ‘mouths were filled with laughter’. Have you ever been overwhelmed with laughter.. I remember years ago teaching a bible study… and someone said something that got all of us rolling in laugher… I struggled to get back on track with the lesson.
Praise and worship was part of the Education of Israel…This is how they told the next generation the Story of Yahweh (God of Israel) .. in salvation history… His mighty ACTS of Salvation… in the past built the faith of the future generations…

Our singing should be filled with Joy.
There is a new Freedom from the past and new freedom to serve God in the future… … Paul tells the Galatians they have been called to Freedom.... with freedom comes the ability to chose… rather than be controlled by the passion and desires of the Flesh…
    3. Sharing Joy
One cannot know the Lord personally without rejoicing and showing happiness
Just like loving others unconditional love is not by chance… but by choice…
The Fruit of the Spirit is to Express the Nature of God in the World… When people see Fruit they will be able to recognize that God is at work in our lives and churches...

Sermon Outlines from the Psalms 50. Sowing and Reaping (Psalm 126:1–6)

Note three things connected to rejoicing:

    1. Laughter. Salvation always brings joy.

    2. Singing. Happy people always sing.

    3. Witnessing. Spread His name among the heathen.

One cannot know the Lord personally without rejoicing and showing happiness

The psalmists say when those in Surrounding nations saw the “The Lord has done great things for them.”
Take a second to think about that… That means that we can decide where or not allow joy to manisfest in our lives...
Sharing our Joy is simply bringing what God has done for us into into the life of someone.else
Have you noticed that its easy to be pulled into an emotion… Someone is upset… changes the atmosphere of the room… Joy changes the environment…
We can choose to be victims and see the glass half empty, mope around, and let that nastiness be directed at everyone we know… But it was not what God intended for us to be
then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.”

Cultivating Christian Character: The Fruit of the Spirit Evangelistic Joy

Acts 3 where Peter is used of God to heal a crippled beggar: ‘Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God’ (vs. 6–8).

The fruit of the spirit is visible… there is no such thing as invisible fruit… Fruit is the is the expression of the health of a tree. If tree is sick it is not going to bare good fruit — . One of the reason Jesus cursed the fig tree.. is that it had leaves which promised figs.. but it had no fruit and was at best disappointing..…
A good example of this is in where Peter and John were heading to the temple to a prayer meeting.. on the way there was man who had been a cripple from the time he was born… People had carried him every day to outside the temple to beg…at the gate called beautiful.. It is interesting that he was so close to Temple.... the people never thought to take him with them into the temple… But on this day… He asked Peter and John… for help…
    Peter said look at me…
, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”
Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God’
Peter was willing to Share the Joy.. that they had… WHAT I HAVE I GIVE TO YOU..
    MARTIN LUTHER ONCE SAID..

T/s How doe we Pursue kingdom Joy over illusive happiness?
“The Greatest Good” is view that happiness is the ultimate goal of people's lives.
Aristotle argued that is why we do what we do, we seek what we seek and love what we love, because we believe these things will make us happy.
Blaise Pascal 17 century philospher in his work Pensées said something similar. All men seek happiness. This is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end.
The cause of some going to war, and of others avoiding it, is the same desire in both, attended with different views. The will never takes the least step but to this object. This is the motive of every action of every man, even of those who hang themselves. Pascal

God’s rescue should not only be obvious to others but it should be clear to ourselves…
    But not
But they themselves acknowledge what God had done for them perosnally..
This psalm is about God’s deliverance and what God does for us… It reminds us that God does the Rescuing in Salvation… Not only do the nations recognize he great things that God has done for them… vrs 3 The Lord has done Great things for us… we are glad...

A good exercise would be to things about the great things that God has done for us…
Because this is going to be the source of Joy.... when we connect to our personal rescue...
Now, just as Israel went back to their Deliverance to Give us hope in their Present.. We derive our Hope from Christ’s deliverance and our rescue...
Sometimes, this is not clear to us… and we need to really take sometime to think through our rescue..
Peter give us an example How we can connect to our rescue story...… Starting with God the Fathers act in Salvation and then moving to what Jesus has done…what we have been given in Salvation.
Lets take a look at Peters overwhelming joy that comes from the miracle of Salvation…
start praising God… Starting with who Jesus is and them moving to what Jesus has done...
Peter give us this psalm of thanksgiving.... Expresses this overwhelming joy that comes from Salvation…
    1 Peter 1:3–6 ESV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,
something that applies to all of us… That breaks down why we Should be full of joy.

Christ’s resurrection makes us certain that we too will be raised from the dead. Believers are “born again” from their sinful state into the life of grace, which, in the end, will become a life of glory. We shouldn’t be discouraged by earthly trials, for we have the Resurrection to be our backup

redemption is unlike any other. Its hope—Christ’s sure resurrection—gives us incredible security: We have been “born again, not from perishable seed but imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God” (). We should be awed by this incredible hope and respond praise..

This surprise redemption is unlike any other. Its hope—Christ’s sure resurrection—gives us incredible security: We have been “born again, not from perishable seed but imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God” (1 Pet 1:23). We should be awed by this incredible hope and respond with obedience, praise, and love for our neighbor (1 Pet 1:22).

Psalms: An Introduction and Commentary 126:4–6. Restore Us

In other words, the psalmist speaks from an already-not yet perspective. Christians can relate to this moment in their own spiritual lives. We have been saved from sin and death by the redemptive work of Christ on the cross. However, our salvation is not yet completely worked out. We still suffer, sin and die. But we know that the future will bring the full realization of our restoration. Thus, we can rejoice in God’s work in our life as we ask him to complete our salvation.

Cultivating Christian Character: The Fruit of the Spirit Authentic Joy

The believer’s joy is based on such a solid foundation that even in the midst of the numerous spiritual, physical, psychological and emotional conflicts of life he is capable of regarding all sufferings and afflictions from the perspective of overcoming them, if not now, then in the future. This is the perspective of victory over problems already achieved in Christ. We are not guaranteed protection from storms in the Christian life but

    Freedom always brings joy…
This is the message that Paul preached to the Galatians
Fruit of the Spirit the result or outcome of a life that has been regenerated… Born Again -- in to New life.... The Fruit of the Spirit is the Evidence the proof that we are true disciples of Jesus…
We have come into an eternal inheritance in Christ… Where happinesses is short lived… God’s rescue offers us an eternal inheritance…
It is beyond the reach of change and decay—meaning it will never pass away, disappear, or come to ruin as the result of hostile forces. These words contrast this inheritance with all earthly, human possessions. Nothing in the natural order—catastrophe, sin, age, evil—can affect it. God has made it indestructible, existing for all eternity.
One of the ways that we can get in touch with our Joy… is to simply sit down and begin to count your blessings.
    This leads them to rejoice
There is a new Freedom from the past and new freedom to serve God in the future… … Paul tells the Galatians they have been called to Freedom.... with freedom comes the ability to chose… rather than be controlled by the passion and desires of the Flesh…

To understand the … We have to understand the timing of this Psalm.
Verses 1-3 is remembering the past.. the day they returned from Captivity.... But verse 4… Is fast forward to the present… right now things are not that Easy.. in fact we can read about some of the difficulties that Israel faced in rebuilding the nation in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah… The psalm looks back and says Restore us back to that Day… where we felt so joyful..

The mood changes from one of delirious happiness… to one that is just a memory.. this place between
    ‘Between memory and hope”
The new experience of laughter, shouts of joy, and happiness has to be balanced with the reality of life in Canaan. It was a harsh existence
Now, the reality of life kick in… Here is the thing the Christian life is not always going to be on the mountain tops.. there are hills and valley’s … Year ago we were climbing Table Mountain in Cape town and got lost… you go up to what you thought was the top.... and be faced with another valley...
The new experience of laughter, shouts of joy, and happiness has to be balanced with the harsh reality of life in Canaan.
As they look forward they see God goodness as they look forward they realized that life is going to always have challenges.
There are going to be seasons in our lives --- where we are going to experience disappointment and heart ache.. It is natural to experience sadness an anger…
but, that is not where we are to live…We need to remember in the darkness what God has revealed in the light… The psalm itself is the reminder…
So, Looking back to their deliverence, the people rejoiced; looking forward from it, they were driven to their knees in prayer—
Looking back to it, people rejoiced; looking forward from it, they were driven to their knees in prayer
They pray for a continuation of the restoration: restoration of their well-being in the land (“fortunes,” see 14:7). God’s answer to their prayer is a second outburst of blessing, compared to “streams in the Negev
We need to understand that God is always engaged in this restorative process.
    Philippians 1:6 ESV
6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Present distress is no argument for the denial of Yahweh’s power or grace
The psalmist compares restoration to the dry river beds south of Hebron that were generally dry… but then on occassions in the winter months it rained. and water ran down its streams… They might start as a trickle but as it “Streams” it can bring destructive force… and can suddenly bring destroy things like bridges and roads… The point is that these showers that seem insignificant --- can in a moment… unleash sudden blessings…
. We need to know that the Holy spirit is crucial when it comes to our prayers.. We don’t know how to pray but the HS leads us through prayer..
God sometimes works suddenly… The book of Acts… they were in the upper room and suddenly the wind blew through the house… We can be faithful --- to the task and suddenly God is going to pour out torrents of blessings..

The people were not to sit by idly, waiting for God to come through. They had to go out and sow, praying that the Lord would be true. The phrase “seed to sow” (v. 6) is reminiscent of Haggai’s encouragement to the people to sow whatever little they had left, because the Lord will bless them. With our abundance of seed companies and supplies, we forget that the ancient Israelite had to “lose” his seed before he could gain. He had to put his fortune into the soil, hoping for an increase, but was uncertain of the outcome. If his sowing did not pay off, he might not have enough to sow the next season, and he might suffer greater financial loss

Who felt called to reach out the Acua Tribe in the Amazon basin… The Auca Tribe were primitive tribe… “Auca” means savage… were considered to be violent and dangerous to outsiders… His friends and family wanted Jim to stay in the US and take on as safer… ministry position… Jim felt that he American church was well fed…called to missions.
When Jim and his four companions first made contact with the tribe it was by flying over in a light aircraft using a Loud speaker… and passing down gifts…and after several months of contact… they built a base short distance from the village along the Curaray River… The missionaries thought they were making progress.. but one day a group of 10 Huaoriani worriers showed us and slayed the five missionaries..
Even though missionaries had guns with them. They had said that they would never kill the Aucas, even if they attacked them, because they made this strong statement: 'They're not ready for heaven, and we are.'"
Even though Jim Elliot didn’t win one soul to Christ…There labors were not in Vain because the family
members of the slain missionaries return to the Amazon basin and live among the Auca tribe. Their evangelistic efforts eventually help Christianity to flourish among the native people.
The psalmist says that. The Lord will turn the “tears” into “songs of joy” (v. 5)
Tears sown in tears will eventually become songs of joy......

    Conclusion.
Can I Have Joy in My Life? How Can We Rejoice Always?

We must not forget that the fruit of the Holy Spirit is not the same as the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The New Testament shows us that the Holy Spirit distributes various gifts to various believers for various reasons. Not everyone has the gift of teaching. Not everyone has the gift of preaching. Not everyone has the gift of giving. Not everyone has the gift of administration. But when we come to the fruit of the Spirit, it is not as if some Christians have the fruit of faithfulness while others have love, or that some Christians have the fruit of goodness and gentleness while others have peace and selfcontrol. Every Christian is to manifest all of the fruit of the Spirit, and the more we grow in grace, the further we progress in our sanctification, the more gentle we should be, the more patient we should be, the more faithful we should be, and, obviously, the more joyful we should be.

    How connected are to Joy?
The Expositor’s Bible Commentary, Volume 5: Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs V. Assurance of Answered Prayer (126:5–6)

His promises are secure, as Calvin reminds us:

In order then that joy may succeed our present sorrow, let us learn to apply our minds to the contemplation of the issue which God promises. Thus we shall experience that all true believers have a common interest in this prophecy, That God not only will wipe away tears from their eyes, but that he will also diffuse inconceivable joy through their hearts. (5:103)

Joy is not illusive --- In fact it is essential...
In the — Paul writing to Christians from Prison and he gives them this imprerative this command to rejoice…when you’ve done it once — do it again…
    Philippians 4:4 ESV
4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.
Joy is an intentional response to life and its circumstances. To rejoice is a planned response, not one based solely on feelings. .
an intentional response to life and its circumstances. The apostle Paul puts it pretty succinctly when he says, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (). To rejoice is a planned response, not one based solely on feelings. After all, he says to rejoice always. Always covers a lot of ground.
After all, he says to rejoice always. Always covers a lot of ground.
When you choose to be joyful in life, you state ahead of time how you are going to respond to circumstances, situations, and people. It’s as if you set joy as your default setting, the home page of your emotions. Joy is the lens you choose to look through now just as anger was the lens you used in the past.
The secret of joy is Christ in me, not me in different circumstances. – Elisabeth Elliot
