  • There are TWO groups of people the NT devotes to DESTRUCTION:
    1 Corinthians 16:22 NASB95
If anyone does not love the Lord, he is to be accursed. Maranatha.
    John 8:42–47 NASB95
Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent Me. “Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear My word. “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. “But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me. “Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? “He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.”
    Galatians 1:8–9 NASB95
But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!
    (Acts 13:4-12)
    Acts 13:10 NASB95
and said, “You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to make crooked the straight ways of the Lord?
    2 Corinthians 11:12–15 NASB95
But what I am doing I will continue to do, so that I may cut off opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the matter about which they are boasting. For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds.
    2 Thessalonians 2:9–12 NASB95
that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved. For this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false, in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness.
    2 Peter 2:1–2 NASB95
    But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned;
    Acts 20:28–32 NASB95
“Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. “I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. “Therefore be on the alert, remembering that night and day for a period of three years I did not cease to admonish each one with tears. “And now I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
    2 Timothy 4:1–2 NASB95
I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.

    I. Paul’s WONDER about the Galatians’ Defection! – (1:6)

Notice several phrases in this verse:

    1. “I am astonished…” - (NIV, ESV, RSV) (NAS – “amazed”) (NKJV – “I marvel…”)

From Θαυμάζω [thaumazo], which means to be astonished, amazed, astounded, and bewildered.
Paul is notsurprised by the false teachers were doing, but was shocked by the favorable response from the Christians in Galatia!

    2. “…so quickly”

From ταχέως [tacheos] which can either mean easily and readily or soon, and sometimes both!
The believers at Galatia apparently offered littleand ineffective resistance to the false teachers!
Even though they had been taught by perhaps the greatest teacher the church has ever known, apart from the Lord Jesus, they readily rejected the truths of grace they learned from Paul!
    Galatians 4:11 NASB95
I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored over you in vain.

    3. “…deserting” (NKJV – “…turning away”)

From μετατίθεσθε [metatithesthe] – which was used of military desertion, which was punishable by death during time of war!
The verb is reflexive, indicating that the act is voluntary! They were removing themselves!
    2 Timothy 2:11–13 NASB95
It is a trustworthy statement: For if we died with Him, we will also live with Him; If we endure, we will also reign with Him; If we deny Him, He also will deny us; If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.

    4. “…the one who called you by the grace of Christ” (NAS – “…Him who called you”)

The NIV is the more literal translation of the Greek, “…ἀπὸ τοῦ καλέσαντος ὑμᾶς ἐν χάριτι [Χριστοῦ]” Lit., ‘from the one having called you in/by grace of Christ.’
To leave the gospel of grace was not simply to desert a doctrine, but they were deserting Christ!
The ONLY gospel is the gospel of GRACE!
    · The Judaizers would claim to be Christian, and much of their doctrine was orthodox.
    · They must have recognized Jesus as the promised Messiah and even acknowledged His sacrificial death on the cross!
    · They claimed to believe all the truths that other Christians believed!
    · MacArthur – “They did not purport to overly deny the gospel but to improve it by adding the requirements, ceremonies, and standards of the Old Covenant to the New. But anything added to grace destroys it just as surely as does anything taken from it!”
    2 Timothy 2:1 NASB95
You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

    5. “…to a different gospel”

The Judaizers were promoting a different gospel, a completely contrary and ineffective means of being right with God! – (cf. 3:3; 4:9; 5:7)

II. Paul’s WISDOM Regarding the Deception! – (1:7)

The distorted teachings of the Judaizers presumedto be a form of the gospel, but Paul declares that their “different gospel” was “…really no gospel at all” (NIV). (NAS) – “…which is really not another”
    Ephesians 2:8 NASB95
    For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;
    (v.7b) – “…throwing you into confusion”; (NAS) – “…who are disturbing you”
This is a translation of the Greek, ταράσσοντες ὑμᾶς [tarassontes humas] – lit. means to shake back and forth and therefore agitate and stir up!
(v.7c) – “…and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ”; (NAS) – “…distort”
From μεταστρέψαι [metastrepsai] which carries the idea of turning something into its opposite, of reversing, and thereby perverting it!
Whenever the gospel is perverted, the church is unsettled!
Paul has a clear message to those who perpetuate falsehood: (Titus 1:10-16)
Which brings us to the final point in this morning’s message:

    III. Paul’s WARNING of God’s Destruction! – (1:8-9)

The New American Commentary: Galatians calls these two verses, “…one of the harshest statements in the entire New Testament. It does not set well on modern ears accustomed to tolerance at any price and doctrine of God devoid of the notions of judgment and wrath. Yet here it stands, stubbornly and ominously, at the forefront of Paul’s concern.”
Personally, I’m glad that one of the harshest statements is universal in its warning: (vv.8-9)!
It does not matter WHO is doing the preaching—if the message is distorted, the messenger is “eternally condemned!”
(KJV, NKJV, NAS, NRSV) – “…accursed!”ἀνάθεμα

    Conclusion – (2 John 7-11)

    2 John 7–11 NASB95
For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist. Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward. Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds.
Christians are to have nothing to do with false teachers, no matter what their credentials!
The thing we are to do in regards to false teachers is found in (Eph 5:11) – “…expose them.”
    Ephesians 5:11 NASB95
    Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them;
