  • 1 Corinthians 2:6–8 NASB95
    Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory;
    1 Corinthians 2:9–10 NASB95
but just as it is written, Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, And which have not entered the heart of man, All that God has prepared for those who love Him.” For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.
    1 Corinthians 2:14–16 NASB95
But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.

    I. The Prisoner of the Mystery - (3:1-4)

    A. Who he was a prisoner OF - (v.1b)

    B. Who he was a prisoner FOR - (v.1c)

    Colossians 1:24–25 NASB95
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body, which is the church, in filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions. Of this church I was made a minister according to the stewardship from God bestowed on me for your benefit, so that I might fully carry out the preaching of the word of God,
    Colossians 1:26–27 NASB95
that is, the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations, but has now been manifested to His saints, to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

    C. Why he was a Prisoner - (vv.2-4)

    2 Corinthians 4:1–2 NASB95
Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we received mercy, we do not lose heart, but we have renounced the things hidden because of shame, not walking in craftiness or adulterating the word of God, but by the manifestation of truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.
    1 Timothy 1:12–14 NASB95
I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service, even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief; and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus.

II. The CONTENTS of the Mystery - (3:5-6)

    1 Peter 1:10–11 NASB95
As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.
    1 Peter 1:12 NASB95
It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.

    A. (v.6a) - “…fellow HEIRS”

    B. (v.6b) - “…fellow MEMBERS of the BODY”

    C. (v.6c) - “…fellow PARTAKERS of the PROMISE”

    Acts 2:38–39 NASB95
Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. “For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.”
    Joel 2:28–29 NASB95
“It will come about after this That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions. “Even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
    Joel 2:30–32 NASB95
“I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth, Blood, fire and columns of smoke. “The sun will be turned into darkness And the moon into blood Before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. “And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the Lord Will be delivered; For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem There will be those who escape, As the Lord has said, Even among the survivors whom the Lord calls.

III. The PREACHING of the Mystery – (3:7-9)

    (v.7) – “…I was made a minister [διάκονος] – lit., ‘table-waiter’

    A. It is to be done in the POWER OF GOD – (v.7)

    B. It is to be done in HUMILITY – (v.8a) – “…the very least of all saints”

    C. It is NEVER FINISHED – (v.8b) – “…unfathomable riches of Christ”

    D. It is a MINISTRY of TEACHING – (v.9)

    Colossians 1:25 NASB95
Of this church I was made a minister according to the stewardship from God bestowed on me for your benefit, so that I might fully carry out the preaching of the word of God,
    Colossians 1:28–29 NASB95
We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ. For this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me.
    2 Timothy 2:2 NASB95
The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
    2 Timothy 4:1–2 NASB95
I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.
    2 Timothy 4:3–5 NASB95
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

IV. The PURPOSE of the Mystery – (3:10-11)

    Ephesians 3:21 NASB95
to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.
    1 Peter 2:9 NASB95
    But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
The supreme purpose of the Church is NOT to save souls—but to glorify God!
“In the classroom of God’s universe, He is the Teacher, the angels are the students, the church is the illustration, and the subject is the manifold wisdom of God!” – J. MacAurthur.
