Jesus replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘ The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.
(Matthew 26:18 NIV)
There is a famous picture of Jesus with his disciples on their last supper. There are plays about this. Many sermons, papers, and ideas around the picture and scripture verses. It has found its way into movies even.
Let me introduce you to my family dining room table. There are crafts on it. Those who are home will do homework at it. A puzzle or two are put together. We all sit there with our computers and other electronic devices.
What I really appreciate about this table is when all four kids come home, and it is time to eat breakfast, lunch, or supper, they all still want to sit at the table. They do not want to sit on the couch and watch t.v. They do not take their plates up to their rooms. Their desire is for us to sit at the table. They want to share a meal, conversations, memories, thoughts and life plans.
Jesus is with his disciples. They eat together. Jesus washes their feet. The point is to teach humility. They talk and they share. The future is shared there.
Kitchen tables are important. Not as a piece of furniture. It seems like we work harder at the table. It is a place where everyone can gather. It is a place where everyone is accepted. It does not matter where you are in the journey of life, it is one of the safe places we can gather.
An image that I have always loved is where we will all gather when we get to heaven. It will be a table. We will all be sitting at the table, sharing, laughing, crying, feeling peace, love and forgiveness. Even eating a piece of your favorite food.
