  • Good Week or Bad Week? And....
    Does it Matter?
How was your week? Was your week good? Exciting? Did you go from one happy event to the next? Nothing to complain about?
Or, did you have a difficult week? Was it, mentally or physically challenging? Was your patience tested? Was your faith tested?
Everyone goes through that. How was your week? My week was good how was your week? My week was not so good. We have good times, and tough times. Ups and downs. If you are on social media, you see other people post their victories, and occasionally, though not as often, post their defeats.
Last week, we started a new section in Romans beginning with chapter 5, where Paul describes the Christian life, and In the first part of this section, Paul is talking about the blessings we have as a result of being justified by faith. What Paul is saying to us in these verses, is....since we have been justified by faith, good week or bad week it doesn't matter.
    slide-meme
That seems ridiculous doesn’t it? How is that true? right? Perhaps it is true for small things. Like when your car breaks down, or if you have a bad day at work. Like you forgot to put the lid on the paint shaker, RIght? Oh Well, look on the bright side, at least you still have your salvation. Could be… but chances are he was talking about some really difficult suffering.
Life in general in the first century was hard. Everyday existence was a challenge, there was no modern medicine, a relatively minor infection could mean death. People were quite poor, and having enough good fresh food was a struggle, and they did not know about good hygiene practices. War often decimated countries, crime was rampant, and often justice was poorly served.
So, when Paul describes his bad days it is quite different from leaving the lid off the paint can. His bad days are really bad, listen to this from 2 Cor. 11. 2 Corinthians 11:23–29 (NIV) — 23 Are they servants of Christ? (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. 24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, 26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers. 27 I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. 28 Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches. 29 Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn?
Some of us here have had good weeks, and Some of you have had weeks with real struggles, struggles that out weigh mine. I do not make light of your struggles. Some of you may have week upon week that test your faith, test your mental and physical capacity. Sometimes, theses struggles will make you wonder why is this happening to me? You may be in intense physical pain, or mental pain., or both.
If the Bible is as relevant as we say it is. then it ought to have something practical to say about the awful weeks as well. According to Paul, the Christian life is not just about spending life in heaven, it is about getting through the suffering today. This morning let’s explore what Paul has to say about that in Romans chpater 5.
    prayer
    Romans 5:1–5 NIV
1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
    Romans 5:1–2 NIV
1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.
Last week we covered this verse, and perhaps you remembered it as you went through your ups and down of the week. Did it help you to think about the blessings that belong to those who have been justified by faith? Maybe remembering those blessings gave you a positive out look on the week, so let’s review them.

Since we have been Justified by Faith
    We have....
    Peace with God
Access into this grace in which we now stand.
Rejoice or Boast in the hope of the glory of God.
SInce we have been Justified by faith we have what? Peace with God.
    slide 1.
We also have What Access into this grace in which we now stand.
    slide 2
Hopefully, you took those two blessings last week, and went to God, rejoicing over peace with God, rejoining becasue you have access to grace.
The last blessing we discussed is that we can
    Slide 3
Rejoice...or boast...or glory ......in the hope of the glory of God. Depending on which translation of the bible you use, you may have a different word there Translators have used several different words for that second half of Romans 5.2
    Romans 5:2 NIV
2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.
In the 2011 NIV version, they use the word Boast-My NIV, which is the same as the pew bible is the 1982 NIV and it uses the word rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Really boast is not complete, and rejoice is not complete. Rejoice, is more of a state of happiness, the greek word here is not the the usual word for rejoice. The usual word for rejoice is found in Philippians 4, you know that verse Rejoice in the Lord always I will say it again rejoice, This is not the same word-The word used here is like an external expression of rejoicing, like EXULT, or boastfully rejoicing. Almost like we brag about the hope of the glory of God.
One commentator described it like this. We have a sense of celebration and ecstasy beyond normal levels of joy, and the target of our joy is the hope directed toward the manifestation of the glory of God.
The sense of celebration and ecstasy is beyond, normal joy. The joy you experienced BEFORE you were justified by faith is one type of joy, but this joy is beyond that. It is when your heart sings in worship, when you cannot contain your joy for being saved, so that you tell others. It is joy behind why you tell others you love your church, it is why you come to church, it why there is no place we would rather be on Sunday-but here declaring God’s praises-it is why our hearts sing, and we explode with joy---since we have been justified by faith.
It is when our exceedingly great joy is expressed outwardly in worship. Not just singing, but really worshipping. Anyone can sing. You can sing all day long, there are thousands of pop-stars who sing-this is different- we are talking about exceedingly great joy above and beyond normal joy.
This type of joy is not from our everyday experiences, not from the events that lead those social media moments. Not the joy of vacations, or new cars, or casino winnings. This joy is exceedingly above normal joy--this is the joy is the hope of the manifestation of the glory of God.
That word Hope again. I know it seems like I am covering this over and over again, and I am. I am doing it because it is such a KEY to understanding the christian walk, without it life falls apart.
Faith, is placing our trust in God, over what He has done in the past, because of the evidence of things he has done. For example-we trust in God’s forgiveness of our sins-He already did it- of what he did in the past-raised Jesus from the dead.
While faith is based on what God has already done, Hope is trusting God will do what he has promised. Hope is like faith.
    Hope is faith looking forward.
It is knowing that God will do something, because of the evidence of what he has already done. We Hope in eternal life, because we have the evidence of the resurrection. Hope is faith in the future.
So, we exult, or boast or Glor.y..... or we rejoice externally......or we worship-- because we KNOW that God’s glory will be manifest someday, because God always does what he says -we just don’t know when.
That ought to be enough-WE have peace with God, We have access to grace, and We exult in the hope of the glory of God, That is enough a good 3 point sermon, write it on a bookmark, carry it in your pocket, and it will carry you through the week. Right? The paint can explodes in your face, the car breaks down-take it out read it and say at least someday I will be in glory.
But wait…what if I have real problems, what if it just isn’t the paint can. What if my life is actually falling apart. What if I have life and death struggles what if it is my children. What if I face unbearable grief?
Paul says But, wait there is more....That is not all-It ides end end with that-there is more-The Christian life will carry you through suffering, because it is not Meaningless.
    Romans 5:3 NIV
    3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;
We also ---Glory or exult--or rejoice outwardly---or have a sense of celebration and ecstasy beyond normal levels of joy IN our sufferings.
We need to clear-up some misunderstandings before we go forward here. First of all, it is not FOR our sufferings, only a fool would rejoice for sufferings. No this in IN our sufferings.
One form of this is called asceticism. This is the belief, that suffering is the key to holiness or salvation or religious experiences. People flog themselves or cut themselves, they kneel on stones, and sleep on broken glass or something in order to have a holy experience. That is not what Paul is talking about. We exult IN the middle of suffering. We glory WHILE we are suffering. Suffering isn’t the key to a mystical experience.
We kind of BOAST or brag or glory on our sufferings because it is through those sufferings-that Christ is most magnified in us. It is in those sufferings that work of Jesus Christ in our lives is being proven. Being made manifest, something visible, tangible is happening. See before this our sins are forgiven, we know that, but really it is not something we point to. But through the suffering, when we come out the other side, we are NOT the same person that went in.Christ is changing us. We glory in those sufferings because our faith is in action.
People who have not been justified by faith, are not made more Christ-like, they are changed indeed but the opposite. They tend to lose faith. We aren’t losing faith. People who have not been justified by faith, lose faith when they are not walking in the good things of life. These are the people who when they feel God has dealt them a bad hand. Go to war with God. They go to war with God, because they DO not have peace with God.
Maybe things are really horrible, maybe you have a lot of suffering---but if you have faith in God---- If you have faith that the Lord Jesus Christ had justified you--not by what you did but by what HE did at the cross----then you can exult in the struggle you are facing----cause you know it is doing something. Your suffering is not in vain it is has purpose and direction it is building something. You might have to wait to see it, but it is happening.
It is producing in us a perseverance in our faith. That is a stick to it ness-However that looks for you. Maybe at the time of your suffering it is small. Maybe there are doubts that are floating around, but ultimately, since you have been justified by faith--- your faith does not fail. That is the difference in those that have this faith and those that don’t. Those that don’t---don’t know the hope of the glory of God, they do not have that faith looking forward hope, and instead-lose faith in suffering, this is more than just the everyday doubts. They go to war with God, because they do not have peace with God.
Instead, those who have the hope of the glory stick to it. They say things like I don’t know why I’m going through this I can’t see what God is doing but in it I know God is still good. I know God is on his throne- I have peace with with God-I may have suffering but I know that-that may be all you can do at the time. Paul is saying that even as bad as things are there is the hope out there- Like he says in 2 corinthians
    2 Corinthians 4:17 NIV
17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.
This is from that same letter at the start of the message. All those things, in Pauls mind are LIGHT and momentary in comparison with the eternal glory. Even in the middle we can still glory in the suffering because we know the glory will FAR outweigh it. Then frrom
    Romans 5:4 NIV
4 perseverance, character; and character, hope.
The ability to stay faithful when the world is crashing down, also does something. It produces in you character. That word means that word means battle-tested.
    Character means battle-tested.
Think of someone who has lived life, not just read about it. This is someone who--when they see you are suffering and when they see you going through something they can say, I know what you are going through, I have lived it. Character, is a battled-hardened wisdom, that cannot be learned any other way.
You cannot really learn about grief from a book, you have to experience it to learn about it. Reading that grief moments pop up unexpectedly is one thing, to be minding your business on a nice sunny afternoon and having a sweeping wave of grief wash over you to the point of your heart physically hurting is quite a different story. That is battle-tested. Wear it like a medal.
One more misconception to clear up.
There is another belief that goes around the Christian circles like this. Ok now you are a Christian, So God says I have to grow that grow that Christian, so I am going to make them suffer. I am going to put this hardship in their life-so that they become a better Christian, then they will have this wonderful testimony and God will be glorified. And people will come to Jesus. God does not have to that-He can grow a Christian anyway he wants at any time. People can be saved, with or without this wonderful testimony of suffering.
That is not what Paul is saying here. Paul is saying this is HOW it happens-HE is not saying why it happens. God is not author evil. It is the enemy that comes to kill steal and destroy, suffering is a product of the fall-Suffering is a product of having sin in the world.
It is not that simple as a single cause and effect for suffering. The individual reasons for a particular tragedy in someone’s life may not be ours to know why. We cannot presume to know what God has intended or why this suffering is upon us. Although it is tempting, and we want to,, we need to avoid simple reasons like God is doing this to draw you back to him-He may be-But the truth is we don’t know for sure-He equally may not-we don’t know-He may have had a million other reasons, perhpas He is sparing you from something worse. The truth is we don’t know and we cannot presume to know.
This is not WHY it happens but HOW.
So since we have been justified by faith, even in the bad times even in awful suffering, we exult, we boast about God. In that God is building in us perseverance, we are failing in our faith, and God is making us a battle hardened follower of Jesus who has HOPE.
    Romans 5:5 NIV
5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
This hope is not hope that is dashed on the rocks, like the things of this world that fall apart or decay or or are killed or stolen. This Hope does not disappoint us, because this hope remember is faith going forward based on what God has done in the past.
What is it that God has done-He has poured out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Who has been given to us.
Church the Holy Spirit is evidence that your Hope will not disappoint you. The fact that you have the Holy Spirit poured into your hearts, He is our Deposit guaranteeing our salvation. When you first believed, in the Lord Jesus Christ, when you first had a burden placed on your heart to repent and turn to Jesus the Holy Spirit was poured into your heart by faith, and was proof that this Hope will not be put to shame.
That Fact that you praise God is evidence of the Holy Spirit-You CANNOT worship God without the HOLY SPIRIT. Your worship, glorying in your sufferings, is Evidence that God’s love has been poured into your Heart, at your moment of your salvation. Without the Holy Spirit, your singing is empty-it is not worship. If you are worshipping in the middle of suffering through life-You Have the deposit guaranteeing your inheritance.
God the Father sent God the Son to save you and God the Holy Spirit filled you, and that is why you are able to worship, that is why you are able to glory in your sufferings, that is why. The Holy Spirit is your deposit guaranteeing that God will do as he says, and why your hope is sure and certain.
    SO
    James 1:2–4 NIV
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
