Virginia Conference UMC All Saints Day Service

October 24, 2021

6:00 P.M

In preparation for All Saints Day, all clergy and laity of the Virginia Conference are invited to this service of healing. We will sing together, hear the Scripture, grieve together as we light candles for the saints we have loved and lost, and boldly claim the promise of the resurrection through Jesus Christ our Lord. This service is virtual (via Zoom) and you are invited to bring candles to light for all the saints that you would like to remember this year. Rev. Dana Trent, author of Dessert First: Preparing for Death While Savoring Life will be our preacher and will stay on after the service for a time of encouragement and visioning about best practices to offer pastoral care during this season. We will also be using this attached and linked liturgy during this service, which we also offer to pastors to use in their churches this year, so that we can all experience God’s grace in the midst of grief together.

Love & Laundry

Love and Laundry on Friday, September 24, overflowed with blessings like an over-filled washer!! We gave out 19 rolls of quarters, along with flyers about St. Matthias UMC, to 19 very grateful patrons. 4 of those patrons were young men working on a local construction project, who were effusive (in Spanish!) in their appreciation. We met a wonderful young mother and her 7-week old baby girl who had just relocated here from St. Louis (military family), and we gave her information about our MOPS group. She was so appreciative; she and her husband are looking for a church to attend, and she is hungry for other moms to talk to. Another patron had heard about Love and Laundry when we met one another at a Celebrate yard sale recently, and we entertained her young son with coloring books, crayons and Play Doh. We gave Bibles, church flyers and quarters to many other grateful patrons; we talked, listened and are now praying for many of these "new friends."

An enormous blessing came to us in the form of donations: $48.00, which we will turn into quarters for next month's event. One of those generous folks saw our sign and gave us $20, saying her now college-age son had gone to St. Matthias pre-school many years ago! She and the other generous donors talked to us about what a great ministry Love and Laundry is.

The Lord has blessed us so richly, to be able to help out so many folks at the laundromat. It's because of, and thanks to YOU, St. Matthias family, that we're able to make life a little less stressful to some wonderful folks who might never meet you, but will be very grateful to you nonetheless.
