To Tithe or Not To Tithe? That Is The Question
      • Mark 11:22NKJV

  • 2 Corinthians 8:9 ESV
9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.
To truly understand tithing under the Law, let us look at how the nation of Israel was structured.
all the tribes of Israel, except the Levites, had a land inheritance; the Levites were dedicated to God and chosen to oversee the worship of the entire nation of Israel; for their service, God gave to the Levites the tithes that the other Israelites presented as an offering to Him. The tithe was to allow them to concentrate on the spiritual needs of the nation; all the priests were from the tribe of Levi, but not all Levites were priests; the priestly caste descended from Aaron and had specific responsibilities at the tabernacle and the Temple.
    What the tithe was
The tithe is specifically mentioned in the Books of Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. It was a requirement of the Law in which the Israelites gave 10% of the crops grown and the livestock raised to the Levites.
The tithe was based on increase from food and herded animals, not income.
    Leviticus 27:30 NLT
30 “One tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain from the fields or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord and must be set apart to him as holy.
    Numbers 18:26 NLT
26 “Give these instructions to the Levites: When you receive from the people of Israel the tithes I have assigned as your allotment, give a tenth of the tithes you receive—a tithe of the tithe—to the Lord as a sacred offering.
    Deuteronomy 14:24–25 NLT
24 “Now when the Lord your God blesses you with a good harvest, the place of worship he chooses for his name to be honored might be too far for you to bring the tithe. 25 If so, you may sell the tithe portion of your crops and herds, put the money in a pouch, and go to the place the Lord your God has chosen.
    2 Chronicles 31:5 NLT
5 When the people of Israel heard these requirements, they responded generously by bringing the first share of their grain, new wine, olive oil, honey, and all the produce of their fields. They brought a large quantity—a tithe of all they produced.
    The tithe was not money
    Who the tithe was for?
Under the Law, the tithe was defined as the tenth of all things dedicated to sacred use and its purpose was to meet the material needs of the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless and the widow. The Law required multiple tithes for different groups and purposes, so there was a tithe for: the Levites (the First Tithe); the Priests (a tithe of the Tithe); use in the Temple and associated feasts (Eaten Tithe); and the widows and poor of the land, every three years.
    Matthew 5:17 ESV
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
    2 Corinthians 8:1–2 ESV
1 We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, 2 for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part.
    Matthew 23:23 ESV
23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.
    Romans 6:14 NLT
14 Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.
    2 Corinthians 9:7 ESV
7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
    1 Corinthians 16:2 ESV
2 On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come.
