    I have over the past 4 years here in Sunnyside preached through many parts of Scripture.
    Each of those messages are crafted to come back to the Gospel each time.
    I believe that each larger passage of scripture speaks directly about Jesus, His ministry, and the Salvation that he offers by His death, burial and resurrection.
    We have also talked at length about God, The Father. His attributes and how we utilize them in our relationship with the Father and the Son.
    It’s time to turn our attention to the 3rd member of the Godhead or the Trinity.
    BIG IDEA: Why was Jesus Baptized? Why did God say He was pleased?
    God, The Father — God, The Son (Jesus)— and God the Spirit (The Holy Spirit) exists eternally.
    Those three personalities of God, have separate but are all equal parts of the Godhead or The Trinity.
    Although the Father is preeminently the Creator, the Son and Spirit were also involved in the creation of the universe.
    While the Son is the Redeemer, God the Father and God the Spirit are described as sending the Son to redeem.
    Again, all three members were actively participating in the redemption of humanity.
    The Holy Spirit is the Sanctifier, the one who sets apart the people of God.
    The Holy Spirit leads the charge for the battle of our hearts and minds.
    The proof or lack of proof of growing closer to God is sanctification, becoming more and more like Jesus in ALL of our thoughts, ALL of our actions, and ALL of the evidence of growing in faith in Christ.
    Yet the Father and Son also cooperate in this work.
    Each member of the Trinity (The Father, The Son and The Spirit) is in full agreement with the other two, and is personally involved of all aspects of God’s work.
    The very earliest acknowledgement of a multi-member Godhead and our responsibility towards that Godhead is found in the Book of Deuteromy
    Deuteronomy 6:4 (ESV)
    4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

    There is a list of responsibilities that go along with this proclamation that EVERY JEW begins prayers with...
    Love the Lord God with all of your heart, soul and strength. (V.5)
    Hid these commands in your heart, and guard your hearts
    Listen up… this is very important!
    Deuteronomy 6:7 ESV
    7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
    It is our DEMAND from God, to the Jews, to us Gentiles and to the world that we make disciples for Jesus Christ.
    This is not only a New Testament thing… Deuteronomy is part of the Pentateuch, the first 5 (Penta) of the Bible.
    This was written by Moses to the people of God, the Hebrews. It is as valued today by everyone of faith, as it was when it was first spoken.
    In Verse 12 of Deuteronomy 6 Moses implores us
    Deuteronomy 6:12 ESV
    12 then take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
    Do not ignore or forget the Lord God. He brought the Hebrews out of Israel and he has saved or will save all that ask.
    In the coming weeks we will look much closer at this passage so hold on for more.

    Our Passage This Week… Matthew 3.13-17.

    Let’s set this up a bit.
    John came as the last of the Old Testament Prophets. He told every who would listen that the Messiah had come.
    The Messiah did NOT come as a “king’ but as a Servant of all.
    A servant always until death!
    John was out “baptizing” before Jesus began his ministry.
    John was using a pattern that was established hundreds of years before Jesus came.
    John “baptizo-my” dunked under water for ritual cleansing. To make the Jew clean and acceptable to God.
    Jesus came to him… To be baptized.
    All 3 members of the Trinity were active and present when Jesus was baptized. Listen...
    Matthew 3:13–17 ESV
    13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

    So let’s look for the members of Godhead or members of the Trinity as we look at this passage.
    V.13-14

    13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
    ------------
    Jesus, the second member of the Trinity, equal to God the Father and God the Spirit.
    Asked one of his disciples, to baptize him...
    John complains LOUDLY that Jesus is the one that should be baptizing.
    But… Jesus puts it like this
    Matthew 3:15 (ESV)
    15 ...“Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented.
    Part of the righteous act, acting in accord with divine or moral law : free from guilt or sin.
    Everyone should be baptized!
    It is the outward demonstration of what God has done inwardly in the your heart and soul.
    Jesus was the ultimate servant leader and he wanted to show Jews that even he stepped up for baptismal cleansing, as required by Jewish Law.
    BUT...
    God the Father had something else in mind.
    God himself has a mind, he knows ours thoughts, our deeds, and our actions.
    He also knows things that no one else knows! (i.e. the day of Jesus return triumphantly to the earth.)
    God in his Sovereignty knows the motivation and the outcomes for everything that we do, think, act or feel.
    Matthew 3:16 ESV
    16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;
    + Jesus went down, completely submerged
    + As he came up
    + The Heavens broke open
    + The Spirit of God… The Holy Spirit descending like a dove and resting on him.
    + Again… why did he need to be baptized? “To fulfill all righteousness.”
    What is Jesus fulfilling? “All Righteousness...”
    Righteousness is best understood as behavior that fulfills the expectations and requirements of relationship, whether between neighbors or between God and humankind.
    “To fulfill all righteousness” means to complete everything that forms part of our relationship with a God that demands obedience.
    —> When he came up out of the water
    Matthew 3:16 (ESV)
    16 “...the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;
    The Heaven’s opened, He saw the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, coming to rest on him...
    All of this… from V.13-16 is for our us. We can see where even Jesus submitted himself to the baptismal waters.
    Not because he had to… He was already in perfect union with God, the Father and God, the Spirit. BUT because he was a servant of God and of us.
    So we too should be baptized!!!
    I’m not going to tell you there is a particular method or mode of baptism. I’m telling you, your baptism or equivalent commitment to Jesus must be done as a believer…
    +When you make a decision to follow Jesus, immediately after that you are no longer an enemy of God but are now called a “Friend of God.”
    +There is equality between John’s baptism of repentance and the baptism instituted by Jesus when he said
    Matthew 28:19 ESV
    19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
    +Both were symbols of cleansing and had remission of sins in view.
    +Christian baptism is an initiatory sign pointing to a relationship with the Christ and The Holy Spirit.
    +The approval of Jesus was stamped on baptism when He submitted to the baptism of John. By submitting to baptism He set an example for all believers of all ages for all time.
    There is one final verse to deal with...
    Matthew 3:17 ESV
    17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

    So, God was talking, about his beloved Son, He loved him, and The Spirit came down upon Jesus.
    There are a few, but just a few verses in scripture where it is clearly identifiable, that the Spirit of God, The Holy Spirit and Jesus are working together. We have that here.
    The Holy Spirit is active and alive in all believers.
    He is unique and is an individual that is part of a perfect family of God, with God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit.
    BIG IDEA: Why was Jesus Baptized? Why did God say He was pleased?
