05.21.23 Jesus Meets The Needs of the 5,000 - "That We May Believe"
- INTRODUCTION— Last week we dissected a bit the physical healing that a man received from Jesus— This man had been a resident on the steps of the Pool of Healing for basically his whole life.— His Spiritual, Physical, Mental health was destroyed. It could only have redeemed by the GREAT REDEEMER— In some form or fashion we are laying beside this man...— We have become selective in our embracing the whole of Jesus. So, where are you, in the process of turning everything over to Jesus?— Do we 100% trust him by for every physical, spiritual, mental need in our lives?— Don’t hear me incorrectly, if you have any issue in one of these areas.— Talk to your healthcare provider. Sometimes there is a miracle to be seen through pharmacology and medicine— Jesus healed this man, Jesus redeemed this man…And will heal us from everything that makes us ill.— Really, yes really. God is timely [In His Time] and in his Sovereignty [We may not know His will but He knows the larger picture. ]— Let’s turn to our passage for today John 5.19-29. There are bibles in the rack front of you. Or access your app on your phone.— If you prefer there are English/Spanish translations in the last two rows.— Please stand if you are able for the reading of God’s Word.Book of John Chapter 5, Verses 19-29
John 5:19–29 ESV19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. 22 For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.— Please be seatedQUESTION #1 - WHO IS JESUS THAT HE CAN DO THE WORK OF GOD HERE ON EARTH?----------------- John 5:19–20 ESV19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.----------------------------------------------------------------— So clearly here, the Jews are challenging Jesus— Claiming equality with God— Jesus addresses the objection by driving back to the Old TestamentNumbers 16:28 (ESV)28 And Moses said, “Hereby you shall know that the Lord has sent me to do all these works, and that it has not been of my own accord.-----------------------— Moses was held in the highest esteem possible as he said “The Lord: is claiming as Jesus claimed.”— “The Lord has sent me to do these works and they are not of my accord.”— The logic of it all implies that it is the Father who led him to the invalid… It is the Father who wanted the interaction.— It is the Father who is praised and glorified. The interaction leads one to believe that the Son and the Father are walking in absolute unison.— That gives us a great amount of encouragement...— Knowing that God in Heaven, maker of Heaven and Earth is in perfect harmony with the Son.— If we are like most people… It is easy for us to “see” Jesus at work...— Healing— Creating— Feeding— Living, Breathing— It is more difficult for us to “see” you and me doing these things.QUESTION #2 HOW DOES THE SON GET THE RESPONSIBILITY TO GIVE LIFE?— Just as God raises from the dead, the Son is empowered to do the same.— The whole passage so far… Vss 5.19-23 almost form a Parable, or the telling of a fact or reality in story form.— Which leads to better understanding of God in this case. John 5:24–25 ESV24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.— There is a promise here, “whoever hears my word and believes in the Father, those will have eternity!— This has an immediate impact on those hearing and believing.QUESTION #3 WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HAVE ETERNAL LIFE!— As hearer, believer that promise is immediately effective...— We are free from the eternal affects of sin. Our Faith Alone in Christ Alone.. gives us all that we need and much more.— A spot in God’s Kingdom… forever and ever and ever.— That sounds really good to me, how about you?— Hearing and believing that He is the Christ, the promised one, the one that we can and should put all of our trust in.John 5:26–27 (ESV)26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.27 And he has given him [Jesus] authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.— The passage reminds us here and regularly that the Father has granted life to Christ.— The Father has also given Christ authority to execute judgement… Because he is the “Son of Man,” the Christ.“Son of Man”— The “Son of Man” is deeply found in the Old Testament title that clearly and only identifies Jesus… Listen— In the last portion of Daniel 7.Daniel 7:13–14 (ESV)13 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, [Jesus] and he came to the Ancient of Days [God]and was presented before him.14 And to him [Jesus] was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.— In eternity past, present and future, God has seen his way clearly even in 2023.— He is about His business here this morning… in every morning God is to be glorified. John 5:28–29 ESV28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.— Do not be amazed… By what you are reading here. By what you have been told, Maybe by what you still believe.Jesus, in his role as Son of Man, raises people from the Dead— And it turns out that when Jesus gives life… even to those in the tombs who had died… forever ago.— They will have life!!!— All of us have had friends, loved ones who have died in Christ… THEY WILL HAVE LIFE AGAIN!!!— But...Those who are deaf to the voice of the Son in life must hear and respond to the voice of the Son in Judgement!— They will be held eternally to account for every single transgression they have made— The accounting of past sin is washed away in the blood of Christ. But you MUST HAVE the blood of Christ!— Our salvation, our continuing relationship with God through His Word, Our growth in knowledge through our relationship with Christ in discipleship is a contract that must and will be satisfied.— We have to do our part… It is a command! The “resurrection,” on that day will reveal for everyone the decision that we made to follow Christ or not— Please pay attention here...— Your decision… even today, even right now to follow Jesus will reveal to the world and everyone who ever lived— That you are of the TRIBE OF JESUS!!!— Since we don’t know the will and ways of God, today may be your very last chance to accept Jesus as the Lord of your life.THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION - IF YOU HAVE NEVER GIVEN YOUR LIFE TO CHRIST… WHAT IS STOPPING YOU TODAY?— If this message today, or the compelling need that you heard, and understood maybe for the first time today.— If any of that rings true for you… I think it’s time to accept Jesus into your heart, mind, soul and strength.— I’d like everyone to bow your head and pray with me.Father God we are the vilest of sinners, as such we can NEVER be in your presence.By Jesus sacrifice on the Cross we have been given an Eternity, bright with a future.God we confess our sin and we ask you to come into our life and make our paths straight.— In your Name we pray— If you prayed that prayer earnestly to God, you have been saved!— You are free from the eternal consequences of your sins.— On your way out this morning after our final song… catch my eye, give me nod— And the walls of hell will quake and Heaven will be alive with another sinner “saved.”SONGAs a token of our thanks to Mom’s and the many women who have been and will be “mothers” to those who are mother-less… We give you thanks! On your way out this morning one or more of our Elders will hand you a small succulent. Why a succulent… Mom’s can grow a child up in the ways of God. Mom’s rarely get the chance to see the end result of their work. But a succulent can remind you of the long hard work it takes to make a flower.“You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy even more succulents and that’s pretty much the same thing.” - Unknown

- Bit of Review— Last week we covered, the middle part of John, Chapter 5.— The members of the ruling parties, the Pharisee’s and Saduccees were beginning in some intensive warfare.— They were attempting to divide God from God the Son.— Jesus reacted swiftly… listen to Chapter 5:26.
John 5:26 ESV26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.— God further declares the position of His Son Jesus when He says John 5:27 ESV27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.How do we avoid these terrible consequences?— In a word… It’s all about Jesus!— Let him in, Let him redeem you from your unfocused chaotic life, void of any real purpose.— Your eternity is awaiting...--------------------------Scripture Reading— I am going to change things up a bit… In our scripture reading I’d like you to experience a different TRANSLATION when we read.— Maybe next week, we can talk about the differences between a translation and a paraphrase.— I promise, I will always stay true to God’s word.— During our verse-by-verse teaching I’ll usually stick with The English Standard Version, These are the Bibles in the pew racks in front of you.— Spanish-English Bibles are available in the last two rowsGospel of John, Chapter 6, beginning in verse 1 John 6:1–15 TPT1 After this Jesus went to the other side of the Lake of Tiberias, which is also known as Lake Galilee. 2 And a massive crowd of people followed him everywhere. They were attracted by his miracles and the healings they watched him perform. 3 Jesus went up the slope of a hill and sat down with his disciples. 4 Now it was approaching the time of the Jewish celebration of Passover, and there were many pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem in the crowd. 5 As Jesus sat down, he looked out and saw the massive crowd of people scrambling up the hill, for they wanted to be near him. So he turned to Philip and said, “Where will we buy enough food to feed all these people?” 6 Now Jesus already knew what he was about to do, but he said this to stretch Philip’s faith. 7 Philip answered, “Well, I suppose if we were to give everyone only a snack, it would cost thousands of dollars to buy enough food!” 8 But just then, Andrew, Peter’s brother, spoke up and said, 9 “Look! Here’s a young person with five barley loaves and two small fish … but how far would that go with this huge crowd?” 10 “Have everyone sit down,” Jesus said to his disciples. So on the vast grassy slope, more than five thousand hungry people sat down. 11 Jesus then took the barley loaves and the fish and gave thanks to God. He then gave it to the disciples to distribute to the people. Miraculously, the food multiplied, with everyone eating as much as they wanted! 12 When everyone was satisfied, Jesus told his disciples, “Now go back and gather up the pieces left over so that nothing will be wasted.” 13 The disciples filled up twelve baskets of fragments, a basket of leftovers for each disciple. 14 All the people were astounded as they saw with their own eyes the incredible miracle Jesus had performed! They began to say among themselves, “He really is the One—the true prophet we’ve been expecting!” 15 So Jesus, knowing that they were about to take him and make him their king by force, quickly left and went up the mountainside alone.— Please be seated--------------------------------- John 6:1 ESV1 After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.— Jesus took a hike, a quite long hike, from where he was last chapter to the opening of this one— “A massive crowd” followed him everywhere. It could have have been 5,000 men and another 15,000 family members. We have some good ideas but let’s just say 5,000Question #1 - What attracts us to follow Jesus?— “That’s the way that I was raised”— My friends would all abandon me if they knew I was “faking” it and didn’t really believe.— I’ve talked and talked about him… But I have yet to turn my heart, mind, soul and strength towards Him.— It’s how you get ahead here in The Valley.— FINALLY —He saved me, from the consequences of sin and death and has given me NEW LIFE!— That “new life” comes with some responsibilities— Invite others to hear and see your story come alive like it did in Shawn’s life— A life that could that could have NEVER been redeemed except for a willing co-worker and the Holy Spirit.----------------------------------— Jesus had watch the size of the group following him grow to at least 5,000.— Look at V.3 John 6:3 ESV3 Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.— Jesus was the pattern by we ALL should follow— Jesus went up the mountain or slope and took his disciples with him.— Jesus on occasion pulled away from the larger group to pray to his father or simply for rest.— This time he took the Apostles, the 12, with him to pray.— After what could have been a lengthy time he looked up and saw the many multitudes that were below him John 6:5 ESV5 Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?”— So the provision of food becomes the focal point of the passage.— Which affirms Sunnyside First Baptist and our regular pot-lucks, summer nights, and other opportunities to EAT!!!— Here is a by-the-way, The Elders have decided that, “YES!” we will be doing summer nights again this summer. Hold on for dates and detailsIf you stop there your stomach may be full but you have really missed the boat— Of course we know that Jesus is God with skin on.— We know that He can do whatever the Father has directed to be done. Our responsibility is to believe, by Faith through the Holy Spirit, that it can be done.— Oh Jeff, that’s easy...— Of course it is… looking back 2000 or so years the world and everyone in it is saved. There is zero need to gather, to worship, to pray, to serve, to give, to call pastors, elders or deacons.— It’s all done… now we are just waiting for His returnTHAT IS ABOUT 100% FALSE AS ANY FALSEHOOD COULD BE.—I do want to move on but before I do I want you to be sure that your ready for me to move on.Summary— Jesus climbed a hill to get some space to teach and pray with His disciples.— He became aware the “crowd” numbered over 5,000. And they were hungry!— He could’ve just created the food in the same way he did the wine when he changed it from water.— Instead he used the least of these, a boy with fish and a couple of loaves of bread. To fed the 5000?!?!— This “boy” certainly could have, maybe should have reminded us of King David as a child.— As a child, David got a mission from God, did NOT back down in the face of insurmountable odds… He killed the Philistine— What exactly were the odds that would happen?— Look at one final verse for me… V.14 John 6:14 ESV14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!”— Only in the intervening centuries have skeptics, doubters and naysayers drawn attention away from the miracle— I believe that it takes more faith to believe this was a slight on hand or is in another context.— Than it is to believe by Faith that this happened exactly as it saidQUESTION #2 - What are you trying to handle yourself when you should rely on faith alone?— IF I just worked harder, smarter, longer I can do this.— IF I just had a little bit more money I could retire at 50.— IF I sell this land, this car, this home I know I’ll have enough..------------------------— If you don’t watch it… the proverbial little boy with a some fish and bread is going to beat you to the reward.— My guess is that each of us has those things that we are holding on to much to tightly...— So tight that Faith has no place in what we are thinking, acting or doing.ACKNOWLEDGE GOD IN ALL THAT WE DO. WE HAVE NOTHING…WITHOUT FAITH.— Do you believe it?— I certainly am standing on solid ground in telling this to you.— Let me propose something… begin to draw faith into your decision making process. ALL OF THEM!— From the smallest decision to the biggest…— Let’s see what can happen… share it with me or the church as a way of growing their faith too.— After our last song this morning, please be seated. — The Gideons are here. Dr. Wallace Donaldson will talk 15 mins or less to talk about the mission of the Gideons.
