Our Beliefs
Statement of Faith
The Church upholds the fundamental truths in Christianity including :
- The unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in the Triune Godhead.
- The sovereignty of God in creation, revelation, redemption and final judgment.
- The divine inspiration and infallibility of the Bible, as originally given, and its supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.
- The deity of the Lord Jesus Christ; His virgin birth; His sinless life; His miracles; His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood on the cross; His bodily resurrection; His ascension to the right hand of God the Father and His Personal visible return to power and glory.
- The universal sinfulness and guilt of all men since the Fall, rendering them subject to God’s wrath and condemnation.
- Redemption from the guilt, penalty, dominion and pollution of sin solely through the sacrificial death (as our Representative and Substitute) of the Lord Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God.
- The presence and power of the Holy Spirit in the work of regeneration.
- The justification of the sinner by the grace of God through faith alone.
- The indwelling and work of the Holy Spirit in the believer.
- The one Holy Universal Church which is the body of Christ and to which all believers belong.
- The judgment of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved will be raised to life eternal and they that are lost will be raised to eternal damnation.
Our Values
Total commitment to the Lordship of Christ and His interests is the norm for every believer. We are commanded in Scripture to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength (Luke 10:27). This is a matter of continual personal choice that has to be made daily in our lives and involves submission to Christ as Lord of our lives, doing all things with excellence for Christ, be it in our workplace or in Christian ministry (Col 3:23,24). Such dedication enables us to have a close walk with the Lord and is acceptable to God.
Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Mt 6:21). Our commitments (core values) determine the stewardship of our talents and resources. It is therefore important for us to determine what our core values are.
To help us live out our personal and corporate commitment to the Lordship of Christ, our church has adopted the following core values:
- A Commitment to the Word of God
- A Commitment to Grow Spiritually
- A Commitment to Pray
- A Commitment to Worship God
- A Commitment to Build Godly Families
- A Commitment to Strengthen Biblical Community
- A Commitment to Serve
- A Commitment to Share the Gospel
Our History
The Bible Church is an independent and evangelical Church founded in January 1958. It was known then as The Sunday Bible School (SBS). The pioneers were a group of young people to whom God had given the vision of local Christians meeting to study and teach the Word of God and reaching locals with the Gospel.
They received much help and encouragement from a missionary couple, Mr and Mrs Paul Contento. The group met regularly to study the Word of God, pray and conduct Communion services and Baptism. In 1964. the SBS leaders formally established the group into a local church and SBS was renamed The Bible Church, Singapore.
At first, the Church met in borrowed premises at schools, other churches and lecture halls. Later, in the early 1970s, houses were bought in Soo Chow Gardens, Ming Teck Park and Jalan Mas Puteh to use as house churches, in addition to a central city church based at Scripture Union and Bible House. A fifth centre was started at the rented premise of Ebenezer Church.
When the Government stopped the use of houses for worship meetings, the search for land to build a church intensified. In 1982, we jointly tendered with Mount Carmel B-P Church for this piece of land where the present building stands. The move to Clementi brought to an end those nomadic years when we met in venues all over the island. We believe that the significant giving from dedicated members, the godly leadership of the Church Council and the bountiful grace and provision of our Heavenly Father have enabled The Bible Church to set up home in Clementi Bible Centre.
