Proverbs 3:3-4 NLT
Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart.4 Then you will find favor with both God and people, and you will earn a good reputation.
Proverbs chapter 3 continues to give us instructions on how to get the best out of the life we have here on earth. The next two verses highlight two qualities. The NLT lists them as loyalty and kindness. The NIV translates them as love and faithfulness. The Voice and the King James Version both list mercy and truth. So what is it? What do I need to never let leave me? What qualities are the key to finding favor with God and people. What will lead me to a good reputation?
Well, let’s go back to the Hebrew. The two words here are hesed and emeth. Hesed is defined as goodness or kindness. Many times it is the word used when the scripture describes the Lord’s mercy or loving kindness. Emeth is defined as faithfulness or truth. So you can use any translation. The words are correct, but if we look deeper the instructions we find to win favor with God and people are not complicated. King Solomon instructs us to act like God. His characteristics need to be in our hearts and lived in our daily lives. If we can live like God, we will have a good reputation. He is faithful, loyal, and kind. God is love and truth. In order to reap all the blessings God has for us in this life, our job is not to check off qualities we have, but to actively imitate God day in and day out. Be loyal and kind. Be like God, and enjoy the abundant life He has for us.
Lord, You are loyal, faithful, kind and loving. Fill me with Your Spirit so that I can be more like you today. Help me to imitate your character all day today. Thank you for Your favor in my life. In Jesus’ Name…
