Psalm 40NLT
Psalm 92:12–14NLT
- Word To the WiseWeek 1: A Healthy FearPalabra para los sabiosSemana 1: Un miedo saludableBig Idea: Chances are, you have been frightened at some point in your life. In many cases, fear will cause us to run or hide. However, Proverbs talks about a different kind of fear, one that involves God Himself. The Bible calls it the “Fear of the Lord”. But what does this really mean, and how does it apply to us today? Prayer: “God, help us to grow in righteous knowledge that leads to wisdom. Help us to develop a healthy fear of your awesome power and grace.”Oración: "Dios, ayúdanos a crecer en el conocimiento justo que conduce a la sabiduría. Ayúdanos a desarrollar un temor saludable a tu asombroso poder y gracia".Scripture: Proverbs 1:7; Joshua 1:9; 1 Peter 2:9; Proverbs 9:10(All scripture quoted comes from the NIV unless otherwise noted)IntroductionEscritura: Proverbios 1:7; Josué 1:9; 1 Pedro 2:9; Proverbios 9:10(Todas las escrituras citadas provienen de la NVI a menos que se indique lo contrario)IntroducciónWelcome church! So thankful you decided to join us today. We are kicking off a brand-new series today, one that I really think will help us all gain a level of wisdom for our daily lives.¡Bienvenido iglesia! Albert Einstein said, “Wisdom is not a product of schooling, but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” And Charles Spurgeon said, “Wisdom is the right use of knowledge.”Albert Einstein dijo: "La sabiduría no es un producto de la escolarización, sino del intento de toda la vida de adquirirla". Y Charles Spurgeon dijo: "La sabiduría es el uso correcto del conocimiento".Thankfully, the Bible also has a lot to say about wisdom. Time and time again, the biblical writers paint this beautiful image for us, that if we obtain wisdom, we will obtain growth. Growth for our lives, our businesses, our families, our friendships - growth in every area. This, my friends, is what I believe will be produced from this four-week series. We are going to work our way through several teachings from the book of Proverbs in the Old Testament. If you have a Bible with you, I invite you to turn to chapter one with me.Esto, mis amigos, es lo que creo que se producirá a partir de esta serie de cuatro semanas. We begin today by discussing a popular misconception people have about fear.Read Proverbs 1:7
Proverbs 1:7 NLT Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. Lee Proverbios 1:7 Proverbs 1:7New International Version7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools[a] despise wisdom and instruction.Proverbios 1:7Nueva Biblia de las Américas7 El temor del[a] Señor es el principio de la sabiduría; Los necios desprecian la sabiduría y la instrucción.STORY: Talk about a time you experienced fear. Maybe this was as a child, fearful of the dark. Maybe it is every time you get on a rollercoaster, or even think about doing so. It can be lighthearted and fun as you introduce the topic/teaching.If you’re like me, fear can really get to you from time to time. It normally implies that, upon feeling it, we run in a different direction. It causes us to retreat or keep from doing something we may want or even need to do. But today I don’t want to talk just about the fears you and I have day to day. I want to discuss the “fear of the Lord”, as Proverbs says.HISTORIA: Hable sobre un momento en que experimentó miedo. Is the Bible telling us we need to be scared of God?Main Teaching¿Nos está diciendo la Biblia que debemos tener miedo de Dios?Docencia Principal1. It’s the beginning of wisdomThe Bible provides us with a starting point. If we want true wisdom in life, we must begin with the fear of the Lord. Now, as I said a moment ago, the real question we need to answer is: does God want us to be afraid of Him? This answer, in part, will be provided by allowing Scripture to interpret Scripture. This concept means that we cannot answer a question like this simply by reading one verse. Instead, we must look at what the Bible says as a whole to find insight.1. If you grew up going to church, you may have heard many stories from the Old Testament. Maybe you remember the one about Joshua and his army circling the walls of Jericho several times before those walls came falling down. What an incredible thing God did! But, in order to find insight into this question about fear, we must revisit the beginning of this story. Read Joshua 1:9Joshua 1:9New International Version9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”Josué 1:9Nueva Biblia de las Américas9 ¿No te lo he ordenado Yo? This is a well-known and often quoted verse of Scripture. Do you see what God says in it? First, He tells Joshua that there is no reason for Him to be afraid of the task at hand, that which God has called Him to. But then, the Lord gives Joshua the reason as to why he shouldn’t be afraid. That is, because the Lord will go with Him wherever he goes. Joshua is taught what it means to gain wisdom by beginning with a fear of the Lord. Essentially, Joshua understands by now that what God is calling him to do will not be accomplished on his (Joshua’s) own strength. But by recognizing this, Joshua is also able to understand that God’s strength and power are truly beyond anything of this world. It seems to be that the first step in the process of gaining wisdom is understanding that God doesn’t have to use us for anything, He chooses to. Pedro dice esto en 1 Pedro 2:9...Read 1 Peter 2:91 Peter 2:9New International Version9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.1 Pedro 2:9Nueva Biblia de las Américas9 Pero ustedes son linaje escogido, real sacerdocio, nación santa, pueblo adquirido para posesión de Dios, a fin de que anuncien las virtudes de Aquel que los llamó de las tinieblas a Su luz admirable. You and I are used by God to spread His glory and His gospel to the ends of the earth. However, it is the power of His Holy Spirit that is actually doing this work in and through us. Therefore, we must have a healthy fear of the Lord’s ability to do all this on His own. This will increase our reverence and ultimately help us find the true wisdom that comes from Him.Tú y yo somos usados por Dios para difundir Su gloria y Su evangelio hasta los confines de la tierra. It is the foundation of knowledgeBut this fear of the Lord does not just bring us to a point of increasing in wisdom. It also lays a foundation of true knowledge.2. It is cool to be the smartest person in the room. But what kind of knowledge is the writer of Proverbs talking about? What kind of knowledge is truly best in this world? Revisit with me, if you would, Proverbs 1:7 once again. The Bible says that “the fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge”. So, it seems to be that having this “fear of the Lord” which we are talking about today, is meant to lay a certain foundation for any knowledge to be gained. But let’s look deeper at this word “knowledge”.Proverbs 1:7 NLT Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. Pero veamos más profundamente esta palabra "conocimiento".Most of the original Old Testament was written in Hebrew, which means that we have an English translation of this original Old Testament language. When we isolate this word “knowledge”, we see that the original Hebrew word used for it is “daath”. Esta palabra significa conocimiento en el sentido más elevado, señalándonos hacia el conocimiento de Dios, ¡incluyendo la obediencia a Él!This helps us answer the question of what kind of knowledge in this world is best and most important. Knowledge of who God is and what He is about. This is meant to draw us into a deeper understanding of obedience to Him as well. For instance, if we lay a foundation of the fear of the Lord, we will be led to study who God shows Himself to be in the Old and New Testaments. When we do, we will see that, shown to us in many ways, our God is one of love. He truly cares for His creation (people). Because of this knowledge of His love, we are then invited to simply love Him in return. And how do we do that? By following Jesus Christ and His teaching! This is what true knowledge can provide for us as we seek to grow in wisdom and understanding. It will produce good judgmentToday, you may still be wanting some more personal application. We have talked about the fact that obedience to God is often a result of gaining true knowledge and wisdom. But what about the day to day work you do? What other results can the “fear of the Lord” produce? Read Proverbs 9:10Proverbs 9:10New International Version10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. When we know God intimately, we can find it easier, at times, to decide certain things. Let’s take this from a business context. You are sitting in a meeting with fellow employees when your superior asks you to do “whatever it takes” to close the sale. Those around you at the table begin thinking of under the table or behind the scenes ways to get the job done, all of which seem to be unethical and contrary to what you feel God would desire. So, you decide to take a different approach, even though it may end up being more time consuming. This is one example of many that shows us that if we are willing to begin where God says it is best to begin, our judgment on daily matters will be overall better. We will be able to point out the sinful temptations that will try to draw us in, something Proverbs talks a lot about. We will be able to surround ourselves with the right people, those who will both encourage and challenge us, holding us accountable in the process. Please hear me when I say this: there is not going to be a negative shift in your life when you lay foundations of wisdom and knowledge, when you desire to grow in these things. ConclusionAs we wrap up today, maybe you’ve been given some things to think about. Maybe you need to readdress which foundation you are building your life on. Or maybe, this whole concept of the “fear of the Lord” is a new reality for you. O tal vez, todo este concepto del "temor del Señor" es una nueva realidad para ti.Maybe you’ve always associated fear as something bad.My hope is that you have gained some insight regarding what it really means to “fear” the Lord. Let this message not push you further from God, but rather let it draw you in close so that you may learn more about His love, grace, mercy, and strength, gaining wisdom and knowledge in the process. Think about Joshua, who we talked about earlier. Through faith and obedience he was lucky enough to see just how powerful and gracious God is. Through that process it makes sense that he would develop a healthy and righteous “fear” of the Lord. Invite and ask God to help develop the same in you. Spend time considering just how powerful, gracious and amazing God really is.Let’s pray together. Oremos juntos. Proverbs 1:7NIV
