    Church revivals serve two, main purposes: (1) to revitalize the spiritual life of its members and (2) to gain new followers. A church revival involves a group of Christians praying and seeking the Holy Spirit's presence together while rejoicing over a renewed spiritual exuberance.

    6. What are the signs that we need revival?

    Emphasis on Jesus (Acts 2:36). In Acts 2, Peter preached to the crowd gathered at Pentecost about Jesus Christ, crucified, dead, buried, and raised from the dead as Lord and Messiah. When revival comes, Jesus becomes the top priority for Christians.
    Repentance (2:37-38). In revival, people experience conviction for their sins and repent and change their lifestyles. They not only walk away from patterns of sin, but they turn their attention away from petty entertainments to spend more time in pursuit of God.
    A passion for prayer (2:42). Revival creates in people a new desire to pray, worship, and meditate on God. Sometimes, even in sleep, the prayers continue as God clears away our distractions and speaks to us in dreams.
    Hunger for the Word (2:42). When revival comes, people want more of the Scriptures, more personal reading and study, and more exposure to preaching and teaching.
    A burden for the lost (Acts 2:40). Because of the conviction of sin that comes with revival, people realize that others are lost because they are more aware of their own sin and their lostness without Jesus. In revival, we can no longer be content to let people live without being confronted with the love of Christ.
    Increase in salvations (Acts 2:41, 47). Along with the new burden for souls comes a marked increase in salvations and new converts.
    A surge in callings to ministry and missions (Acts 4:20). During revival, people sense God’s calling to Gospel service, whether in vocational ministry or in greater consecration of their daily work life in what others would see as secular settings. (Do you see the logical flow of these phenomena?)
    The manifest presence of God (2:40, 43). God is always present, but in revival, God’s presence becomes obvious among us—whether in conviction of sin, healings and signs and wonders, or reception of the gift of the Holy Spirit.
    Greater generosity toward the work of God (2:45). Church offerings and other manifestations of personal giving to the work of God greatly increase during revival.
    Greater frequency of corporate gatherings for worship and prayer and the Word (2:46). Not only do the number of church activities increase, but Christians begin to meet in homes and at restaurants and other venues to spend time together to share how God is working in their lives.
    Increased fellowship among Christians (2:46). In revival, God’s people experience greater love for one another that draws them together frequently and attracts unbelievers to their community.

    A Revival Meeting Was Being Held ...

The attendance was good, the singing was good, and the preaching was good, but God just didn’t seem to be moving. One night, one of the Deacons stood up and said, “Pastor, I don’t believe there is going to be Revival as long as Brother Jones and I don’t speak to each other.” This man humbled himself before the Pastor and the rest of the congregation and walked over to Bro. Jones and apologized to him and asked for forgiveness. The two men shook hands and buried the hatchet, and God began to move in a powerful way, restoring relationships all over the building.

    Some of you need to do the same thing today. Some of you haven’t spoken to one another in over a year. That isn’t healthy and God isn’t going to bless this church and use us the way He wants to until you forgive one another.

    Favor with the community (2:47). While the early Christians saw favor with “all the people,” that did not include the Sanhedrin and the Jewish leaders, who immediately began to persecute them (Acts 4:1). Both favor and opposition arise when revival begins. Mockers will always arise when revival occurs, and opposition from people in power also increases. But the joy of God’s favor trumps any form of persecution or opposition.

    All these signs represent precious elements of the renewal of God’s work among us, but at least one more bonus sign accompanies revival that the text of Acts does not mention. People who have experienced revival in their spirit experience greater joy in their personal lives and work. They find they have a song in their hearts during their work time, as all of life becomes the temple of our worship and prayer. Their work ethic soars and their prosperity increases, further fueling the greater generosity mentioned in the text. Religious revival is the best thing that can happen to an economy in recession!

    More than anything
    Our society has many needs and faces many crises today. People disagree about the best ways to improve our common lot. But I believe that, more than anything, we need another Great Awakening in America. It will begin and must begin with the household of faith. We commonly hear that revival is a “sovereign work of God’s grace,” and the reality remains that we cannot “work up” a revival, and we certainly cannot have a Great Awakening across American society by merely urging each other to have one. But we can pray. Prayer has always preceded revival. The Acts 2 revival began with many days of concerted prayer in the Upper Room. It is unlikely that revival has ever begun in any other way. Maybe you have been praying for revival for a long time alone. If not, start now. Maybe it’s time to invite a few fellow believers to join us in our homes to pray for revival. Churches can always increase their prayers. But more than anything else, we need to seek God—for ourselves, our families, our neighbors, our country, and our world.

    Ten Requirements for Having a Personal Revival

    If there is one thing we need, it is revival. But before revival can come to the church, it must come to the individual Christians who comprise the church. This blog post, written by A. W. Tozer and taken from a compilation of his works entitled The Size of the Soul, gives us ten requirements for having a personal revival:

I recommend that the self-examination be made on our knees, rising to obey God's commandments as they are revealed to us from the Word. There is nothing romantic or colorful about this plain, downright way of dealing with
    ourselves, but it gets the work done. Isaac's workmen did not look like heroic figures as they digged in the valley, but they got the wells open, and that was what they had set out to do.

Unless you break away from the funny boys, every spiritual impression will continue to be lost to your heart, and that right in your own living room. The people of the world used to go to the movies to escape serious thinking about God and religion. You would not join them there, but you now enjoy spiritual communion with them in your own home. The devil's ideals, moral standards and mental attitudes are being accepted by you without your knowing it. And you wonder why you can make no progress in your Christian life. Your interior climate is not favorable to the growth of spiritual graces. There must be a radical change in your habits or there will not be any permanent improvement in your interior life.
    7. Sé serio. Puedes permitirte ver menos programas de comedia en la televisión. A menos que te separes de los chicos graciosos, cada impresión espiritual continuará perdiéndose en tu corazón, y eso justo en tu propia sala de estar.     8. Deliberately narrow your interests. The jack-of-all-trades is the master of none. The Christian life requires that we be specialists. Too many projects use up time and energy without bringing us nearer to God.
    If you will narrow your interests, God will enlarge your heart. "Jesus only" seems to the unconverted man to be the motto of death, but a great company of happy men and women can testify that it became to them a way into a world infinitely wider and richer than anything they had ever known before. Christ is the essence of all wisdom, beauty and virtue. To know Him in growing intimacy is to increase in appreciation of all things good and beautiful. The mansions of the heart will become larger when their doors are thrown open to Christ and closed against the world and sin. Try it.
    8. Reduce deliberadamente tus intereses. El gato de todos los oficios es el maestro de ninguno. La vida cristiana requiere que seamos especialistas. Demasiados proyectos consumen tiempo y energía sin acercarnos más a Dios.
    Si estrechas tus intereses, Dios engrandecerá tu corazón. "Sólo Jesús" parece al hombre no convertido como el lema de la muerte, pero una gran compañía de hombres y mujeres felices puede testificar que se convirtió para ellos en un camino hacia un mundo infinitamente más amplio y rico que cualquier cosa que hubieran conocido antes.     8. Begin to witness. Find something to do for God and your fellow men. Refuse to rust out. Make yourself available to your pastor and do anything you are asked to do. Do not insist upon a place of leadership. Learn to obey. Take the low place until such time as God sees fit to set you in a higher one. Back your new intentions with your money and your gifts, such as they are.
    9. Comienza a testificar. Encuentra algo que hacer por Dios y por tus semejantes. Rehúsa oxidarte. Ponte a disposición de tu pastor y haz cualquier cosa que se te pida que hagas.     10. Have faith in God. Begin to expect. Look up toward the throne where your Advocate sits at the right hand of God. All heaven is on your side. God will not disappoint you.
