About Holy Week & The Three Days

Every Sunday in worship, the church celebrates the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit gathers us to receive again the gifts of God that come to us through Christ, the saving Word. On several key days at the center of the church year, however, worship takes a particular shape. These central days have come to be known as the Three Days, recalling Jesus' own words to his disciples that he would be handed over to death, and that "after three days he will rise again" (Mark 10:34). The Three Days encompass the time from Maundy Thursday evening through Easter Day, as the church each year makes the passage with Christ through death into life.

Maundy Thursday Worship

Holy Communion Service: “Promise Amid the Pain”

With nightfall our Lenten observance comes to an end, and we gather with Christians around the world to celebrate the Three Days of Jesus' death and resurrection. On Maundy Thursday, we join at the Lord’s Table as we hear the teachings of Jesus’ at his Last Supper with the disciples. Then, we share our most powerful remembrance of that night—the Sacrament of Holy Communion—one final time before Easter.

Welcoming and Gathering

Prelude, Welcome, and Announcements

Please stand as you are able.

Confession and Forgiveness (1 John 1:8-10; John 20:23)

P: Friends in Christ, in this Lenten season we have heard our Lord's call to struggle against sin, death, and the devil—all that keeps us from loving God and each other. This is the struggle to which we were called at baptism. Within the community of the church, God never wearies of forgiving sin and giving the peace of reconciliation. On this night let us confess our sin and enter the great Three Days reconciled with God and with one another. (Silence for reflection.) Most merciful God,

C: we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

P: In the mercy...of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Prayer of the Day

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray together.

C: Eternal God, in the sharing of a meal your Son established a new covenant for all people. Guide us through your Holy Spirit to give ourselves for the sake of your mission, through our example and Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Please sit.

Profession of Faith (Apostles’ Creed)

C:   I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

C: Hear our prayer.

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: And also with you.

Nurtured By Christ's Meal

Offering

  • Please gather around the Communion rail for the Lord’s Supper. If you have brought an offering tonight, please leave it in the basket near the baptismal font as you come forward.
  • If you are not able to come forward, please remain in your seat and you will be served Holy Communion there.

Offertory Prayer

A: Let us pray. God of glory, receive these gifts and the offering of our lives. As Jesus was lifted up from the earth, draw us to your heart in the midst of this world, that all creation may be brought from bondage to freedom, from darkness to light, and from death to life; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

C: Amen.

Words of Institution (1 Corinthians 11:23-26)

P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: “This is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup. He gave thanks and gave it for all of them to drink, saying: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

For as often as we eat of this bread and drink of this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13, Luke 11:2-4)

C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
