OPENING HYMN - What is the World to Me

Verse 1

What is the world to me, With all its vaunted pleasure

When You, and You alone, Lord Jesus, are my Treasure!

You only, dearest Lord, My soul's delight shalt be;

You are my peace, my rest. What is the world to me!

Verse 2

The world seeks to be praised, And honored by the mighty

Yet never once reflects, That they are frail and flighty.

But what I truly prize, Above all things is He,

My Jesus, He alone. What is the world to me!

Verse 3

The world seeks after wealth, And all that mammon offers

Yet never is content Though gold should fill its coffers.

I have a higher good, Content with it I'll be:

My Jesus is my wealth. What is the world to me!

Verse 4

What is the world to me! My Jesus is my treasure,

My life, my health, my wealth, My friend, my love, my pleasure,

My joy, my crown, my all, My bliss eternally.

Once more, then, I declare: What is the world to me!

INVOCATION

CONFESSION OF SINS & WORDS OF FORGIVENESS

Pastor:            In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

PEOPLE:          AMEN.

Pastor:            If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

PEOPLE:          BUT IF WE CONFESS OUR SINS, GOD, WHO IS FAITHFUL AND JUST, WILL FORGIVE OUR SINS AND CLEANSE US FROM ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS.

Pastor:            Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

PEOPLE:          MOST MERCIFUL GOD, WE CONFESS THAT WE ARE BY NATURE SINFUL AND UNCLEAN. WE HAVE SINNED AGAINST YOU IN THOUGH, WORD AND DEED, BY WHAT WE HAVE DONE AND BY WHAT WE HAVE LEFT UNDONE. WE HAVE NOT LOVED YOU WITH OUR WHOLE HEART; WE HAVE NOT LOVED OUR NEIGHBORS AS OURSELVES. WE JUSTLY DESERVE YOUR PRESENT AND ETERNAL PUNISHMENT. FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR SON, JESUS CHRIST, HAVE MERCY UPON US. FORGIVE US, RENEW US, AND LEAD US, SO THAT WE MAY DELIGHT IN YOUR WILL AND WALK IN YOUR WAYS TO THE GLORY OF YOUR HOLY NAME. AMEN.

Pastor:            In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ, was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

PEOPLE:          AMEN.

APOSTLE'S CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

OUR GIFTS AND TITHES FOR GOD

HYMN - Lord, Whose Love Through Humble Service

Verse 1

Lord, whose love through humble service

Bore the weight of human need,

Who upon the cross, forsaken,

Offered mercy's perfect deed,

We, Your servants, bring the worship

Not of voice alone, but heart,

Consecrating to Your purpose

Every gift that You impart.

Verse 2

Still Your children wander homeless;

Still the hungry cry for bread;

Still the captives long for freedom;

Still in grief we mourn our dead.

As, O Lord, Your deep compassion

Healed the sick and freed the soul,

Use the love Your Spirit kindles

Still to save and make us whole.

Verse 3

As we worship, grant us vision,

Till Your love's revealing light,

In its height and depth and greatness,

Dawns upon our quickened sight,

Making known the needs and burdens

Your compassion bids us bear,

Stirring us to tireless striving,

Your abundant life to share.

Verse 4

Called from worship to Your service,

Forth in Your dear name we go,

To the child, the youth, the aged,

Love in living deeds to show;

Hope and health, goodwill and comfort,

Counsel, aid, and peace we give,

That Your servants, Lord, in freedom

May Your mercy know and live.

OUR PRAYERS & THE LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen

HYMN - Lord of all Hopefulness

Verse 1

Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,

Whose trust ever child-like No cares could destroy;

Be there at our waking, And give us, we pray,

Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, At the break of the day.

Verse 2

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,

Whose strong hands were skilled At the plane and the lathe;

Be there at our labors And give us, we pray,

Your strength in our hearts, Lord, At the noon of the day.

Verse 3

Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,

Your hands swift to welcome, Your arms to embrace;

Be there at our homing, And give us, we pray,

Your love in our hearts, Lord, At the eve of the day.

Verse 4

Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,

Whose voice is contentment, Whose presence is balm;

Be there at our sleeping, And give us, we pray,

Your peace in our hearts, Lord, At the end of the day.

SERMON - Why Do We Grumble?

THE BLESSING

CLOSING HYMN - How Great Thou Art

Verse 1

O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder

Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made,

I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,

Thy pow'r throughout The universe displayed;

Chorus 1

Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee,

How great Thou art! How great Thou art!

Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee,

How great Thou art! How great Thou art!

Verse 3

And when I think That God, His Son not sparing,

Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in --

That on the cross My burden gladly bearing

He bled and died To take away my sin;

Chorus

Verse 4

When Christ shall come With shout of acclamation

And take me home What joy shall fill my heart!

Then I shall bow In humble adoration

And there proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!"

Chorus

Sermon Notes

This weekend Vicar Mark preaches on John 6, Jesus as the bread of life. Sometimes we grumble and complain and Jesus walks us through what is truly important.

  • What are some things that you complain/grumble about today?
  • What are some things that you are grateful for?
  • What are ways that you can look at Jesus and turn your own grumbling into gratitude
  • What would that look like in your daily walk?
